Lesson # 3
Internet and
Browsers
I
magine that you live in a large high-rise building.
You are connected to other residents, so you can
exchange information and share important files.
Your building is a kind of network.
Suddenly, you learn that there are many similar build-
ings with their networks. You start to transmit information
to the residents of other buildings, thus connecting these
networks too (Figure 1).
Figure 1

Internet and Browsers
The Internet is a kind of network. It becomes larger and
larger with each new building.
Users can access the Internet through wireless (Wi-Fi
routers) and wired (cable) systems.
Information on the Internet is displayed on web pages
and websites. A web page is any document on the Internet,
be it an image, text, or an audio file. It often happens that
some information of a page is used on another page or refers
to it. Together, these pages and their connection form the
World Wide Web.
Also, the Internet provides services to exchange
information without web pages. They can be online stores,
social networks, various types of emails.
A special program — browser — allows you to browse
information on the Internet. The best-known browsers are
Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, Firefox (Figure 2).

Lesson #
The main function of any browser is to open web pages
and sites, so you can call it a conductor between the Internet
and the user.
After you open a browser, you will see a start page and a
search bar. In this lesson, we will learn how to work in the
Google Chrome browser (Figure 3).
Figure 3
If you want to find something, type your query in the
Google search bar and press Enter. Google will give you
sites that mention the thing you entered in the search bar.
You can also type your query in the address bar, which is at
the top of the browser (Figure 4).
Figure 4
The search result is links to all the materials related to
your search query. You can select a specific type of infor-

mation you want to find: Images, News, Videos, and so on
(Figure 5).
Figure 5
If you want to find an image, use Google Images (Figure

The search bar here is slightly different (see Figure 7 on
page 6).

Figure 7
Click on the camera icon (Search by image > Choose
File) to upload an image you want to find from your com-
puter (Figure 8).
Figure 8
Another option is to simply drag the image from the
active window to the browser’s search bar. For this, hold the
image with the left mouse button (Figure 9).
Figure 9
The result is the same as in the regular search.

Internet and Browsers
Use tabs to work with multiple pages in the browser
(Figure 10). To add a new tab, click on the + icon on the tab
panel — New tab.
Figure 10
Google Chrome does not limit the number of open tabs.
However, the more tabs, the less convenient to work: icons
become smaller, and the computer works slower (Figure 11).
Figure 11
You can change the order of the tabs by holding the
tab and dragging it on the panel. Tabs can also be pinned.
A pinned tab displays on the left of the window, and it is
represented by the site logo only. To pin a tab, right-click on
it and select Pin (Figure 12).

Let’s discuss other useful features of Google Chrome.
For this, click on the icon Customize and control Google
Chrome (Figure 13).
Figure 13
A context menu appears (Figure 14):

You can add a new tab by clicking on New Tab. You
can also open a new window by selecting New Window. If
you click on New Incognito Window, a new window in the

incognito mode opens. Your work and browsing history are
not saved if you use this window (Figure 15).
Figure 15
While surfing in the regular mode, all your actions are
stored in the browser memory — the History tab. This means
that you can always return to the site that you closed. If you
accidentally close a tab and need to reopen it immediately,
press Shift + Ctrl + T. Your tab will reopen.
The Downloads store files that you downloaded from
the Internet (Figure 16).

Bookmarks allow you to store interesting sites in the
browser memory to get quick access to them in the future.
There are several ways to create a bookmark. One of them is,
while being on the site of interest, click on the star icon at the
end of the address bar (Figure 17). In the dialog box, enter
the tab Name, select a folder, where you want to save this
bookmark, and then click Done (Figure 18).
Figure 17 Figure 18
Another option is to go to Customize and control
Google Chrome > Bookmarks > Bookmark this tab…
(Figure 19).
Figure 19
As everyone knows, earlier letters were written on
paper and then delivered to recipients by postmen. With
the development of technology, people came up with a more

convenient way — electronic mail, or email. It allows us not
only to exchange text messages but send files of any size.
One of the most popular emails is Gmail by Google.
Let’s create a Google account that automatically gives you
access to all the Google services, including Gmail.
For this, go to this link.
Fill in the boxes First name and Last name. Come up
with a unique name — Username — for your email address.
You can write your initials, last name, and numbers. Your
unique name, followed by the @gmail.com, will be your
email address. After this, come up with a password, type
it in the Password box, confirm it by clicking the Confirm
button, and then press Next. Be sure to remember your
password so you can access your email at any time (Figure
20).

Lesson #
You will see your email address at the top immediately
after registration. Fill in the rest of the text boxes that appear.
Notice that if you are under 13 years old, and you specify
it during the registration, Google will request a phone
number or email of your parent.
If you are older than 13, Google will send you a verifica-
tion code after you enter your phone number. Next, enter the
verification code that you receive to your phone (Figures 21
and 22). If you do not have a phone, you can ask your parents
and write their phone number.

Be careful, you can associate only one phone number
with your email account!

end of your letters, which saves a lot of time (Figure 26).
Figure 26
You can also add your photo here. For this, locate the My
picture section, go to About me and upload your photo from
your PC (Figures 27 through 29). Click OK to save changes.

The main function of Gmail, like any other email, is to
send and receive letters. The received letters are in the Inbox
tab (Figure 30).
Figure 30
To view letters or chains of letters that you sent, use the
Sent tab which is the most convenient way (Figure 31).
Figure 31
If you write a letter but do not send it, it is automatically
saved in the Drafts tab (Figure 32). You can go back to your
drafts any time and edit, send, or delete your letter.
Figure 32
If you need to find a letter, use the search bar (Figure 33).
All you have to do is enter a keyword.

Internet and Browsers
As it was mentioned earlier, Google account is created
during the registration. It means that you have accounts and
access to YouTube, Google Drive, and other Google services.
Google Drive stores and synchronizes files on different
devices.
Imagine that you are working on a large project. In
order to complete it, you want to have access to updated
information regardless of the device you are using. Google
Drive was invented as a substitution to a USB flash drive
which one has to carry everywhere and replace old files with
new ones. This way, you can log in to your Google account
from any device, and your files will a lways be available.
Synchronization is when you edit a file on one device,
but the changes display on all devices.
Note that Google Drive memory is 15 GB.
To open Google Drive, click on the hamburger menu
button in your Google account and choose Drive (Figure 37).

Lesson #
Let’s upload files from the computer to Google Drive.
For this, go to New > File upload (Figure 38).
Figure 38
Select a file you want to upload and click Open. Once the
file is uploaded, you will see it on the drive (Figure 39).
Figure 39
Follow the same steps to add a new folder (New >
Folder > Create) or upload a folder from your computer
(New > Folder Upload > Upload).
And how do you provide another user with access to
a folder or allow him or her view and edit files that were
uploaded to Google Drive by you?
Easy. Just right-click on the document and select Share
(Figure 40).
Then enter email addresses of the people you want to be
able to view and edit this file and click Done (Figure 41).
