Introduction

The punctuation of written texts, which aims to reproduce the


intonation of spoken language is an important chapter within
spelling of any language. It largely depends on the correct
expression and comprehension of written messages. Punctuation organizes the
speech and its different elements and allows to avoid ambiguity in texts
that, without their employment, could have different interpretations.

The correct use of punctuation marks ensures the proper


articulation of the units of meaning that make up a sentence or a paragraph.
That is why punctuation marks require very precise use; if they
put in the wrong place, the words and the phrases stop saying what the
the author wanted to say. The more the signs highlight the structuring of
content (central theme, subtheme, idea, detail), will be more coherent and precise
the text.

Spanish has the following punctuation marks:

period ., comma ,, semicolon ;, colon :, ellipsis ..., punctuation marks

The period, the comma, the semicolon, the colons and the dots
ellipsis is always written without leaving a space of separation with
regarding the word or the sign that precedes them, and separated by a space
from the following word or sign, unless it is a closing one.

parentheses, brackets, quotation marks, and dashes that enclose clarifications and
clauses, all composed of an opening sign and a closing one, are
