Where these people go and what will influence their choices.

What is tourism?

The temporary movement of people away from places where they normally work and live

This movement can be for business, leisure, or cultural purposes

It involves more than 24 hours but less than one year

Global tourism increased by 4.7 per cent in 2014

Social-People meeting each other, visiting family

Historical- Landmarks

Environmental- Seeking different environment, some landmarks are getting destroyed, people want
to see

Economic- People buying stuff, getting food, people have more money

Political- may not travel due to political conflicts in the destination

Technological- More accessible planes, boats

Tourism employment

Tourism impacts are particularly strong in the local farming and fishing industries, handicrafts and
construction industry, among others.

Tourism is a valuable tool in alleviating poverty as employment within the sector can provide income
and experience and therefore contribute to a person’s social inclusion and individual development

It also contributes in a major way to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the
destinations where local people are employed and trained, and income flows directly to the local
economy.

Jobs

Worldwide 277 million jobs exist because of tourism. Globally about 9.8 percent of gross domestic
product is linked directly to the tourism industry, and for many developing countries it is the primary
source of income.

In 2017 the travel and tourism sector directly employed nearly 119 million people and supported
313 million jobs this is the equivalent to 1 in 10 jobs worldwide.

Over the past seven years, the travel and tourism sector has created 1 in 5 new jobs

Looking to the next decade 100 million new jobs could be created in the travel tourism sector by
2028-64.5 million of these will be in the Asia pacific region with 35 million in China and 10 million in
India
What is a tourist? A person who stays in a place for over 24 hours, the temporary movement of
where they normally work and live

Why is tourism on of the fastest growing industries? Provide six reasons tourism is making great
progress. As travel industry provides so many jobs, governments should be more than willing to
support such a growth. Much of it is happening thanks to the emergence of nations such as
China and India, where the newfound freedom of citizens to travel.

Types of tourism

Domestic- travelling within your own country

International- leaving your country to travel

Mass tourism-Going to one place for an event in large masses of people

Types of tourists

Organised mass tourist- least adventurous, purchase a package with a fixed itinerary does not
venture from the hotel complex alone; is divorced from the local community

Make few decisions about the holiday

Individual mass tourist-maintains control over their itinerary and uses accommodations as a base
and may take tours or hire a car

The explorer-Arranges their own trip, may go off the beaten track but still wants comfortable
accommodation, is motivated to associate with local communities and may try and speak the local
language

The drifter-identify with the local community and may live and work within it, shuns contact with
tourist hotspots, takes risks in seeking new experiences, cultures and places.
Asia is the market leader in the medical tourism industry, with Thailand and
India vying for the number one spot. Thailand is slightly more expensive, but
does offer a better tourist experience and has a wider number of services
available.
Impact of Ecotourism

Ecotourism differs from traditional tourism in two main ways

It recognises that many tourists wish to learn about the natural environment and the cultural
environment

Aims to limit the impact of tourist facilities and visitors on the environment

Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment sustains the wellbeing of the
local people and involves interpretation and education

Three principles of Ecotourism

Involve the local communities in the development of ecotourism

Reduce the negative impact on the environment

Respect the rights of the local people

Ecotourism is the fastest growing sector in the tourism industry increasing at about 10 to 15 percent
per year

been used correctly as continuous tourism can strain the land

7. Tourism expenditure increased by 93 per cent between the year 2000 and the year 2010, from
$475 billion to $918 billion. Using these figures as a guide, predict how much income might be
generated through tourism by 2030.

One example of sustainable tourism is the Six Senses Fiji resort, which is powered solely on solar
power, recycles rainwater, runs on a low-waste model, and uses handiwork such as furnishings and
artwork created by local villagers
Factors that influence tourism

Improvement in transport and technology have increased our awareness of the world around us

Improved living standards, increased leisure and greater disposable incomes have all created
opportunities for people to travel and to experience new places and culture

Why is tourism increasing

Improved living standards and higher wages

Improved technology/time the time to fly to countries in a shorter amount of time

Today airline and tour companies offer a range of deals and the increased number of competitors for
the tourist dollar means that travel is more affordable that that travel is more affordable

Increased awareness and knowledge of the world interest’s people’s desire to see new places and
experiences and different cultures.

In general, the travelling public have more leisure time and more money making both domestic and
international travel viable
one in 11 jobs worldwide is linked either directly or indirectly to the tourism industry

In the first 10 years of the twenty first industry grew by almost 40 per cent from 647 million
international arrivals in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2014. It is predicted that this figure will rise to 1.8
billion in the year 2030

Tourist added us$1.234 trillion to the global economy in 2014 figure 5 shows to top 10 tourism
earners for 2014

Money remains in the local economy rather than in the hands of developers and is used to improve
local services not just tourist services

To need of indigenous communities to farm the land is balanced with tourist development
Tourist numbers are controlled to ensure that the environment is not damaged

This process is called leakage and it can be extremely impactful for local communities

Who comes and who goes in Australia?

Over 13 million Australians go away on holiday each year

10 percent plan to travel overseas and 55 per cent plan to holiday within Australia

While the number of domestic travellers may be high international tourism is on the rise

In 21014 Australians made in 7.9 million international trips and spent a total of 161 million nights
abroad

It is estimated that they contributed 47.3 billion global economies

We are taking three times as many international holidays today than we were a decade ago

Our currency has excellent buying power in a wide range of holiday destinations

Competition between airlines

Choice of flight

Package deals that include combinations of tours accommodation flights and meals

All these continue fuel the growth of the international market
