This movement can be for business, leisure, or cultural purposes

Tourism employment
Tourism impacts are particularly strong in the local farming and fishing industries, handicrafts and
construction industry, among others.
Tourism is a valuable tool in alleviating poverty as employment within the sector can provide income
and experience and therefore contribute to a person’s social inclusion and individual development
It also contributes in a major way to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the
destinations where local people are employed and trained, and income flows directly to the local
economy.
Jobs
Worldwide 277 million jobs exist because of tourism. Globally about 9.8 percent of gross domestic
product is linked directly to the tourism industry, and for many developing countries it is the primary
source of income.
In 2017 the travel and tourism sector directly employed nearly 119 million people and supported
313 million jobs this is the equivalent to 1 in 10 jobs worldwide.
Over the past seven years, the travel and tourism sector has created 1 in 5 new jobs
Looking to the next decade 100 million new jobs could be created in the travel tourism sector by
2028-64.5 million of these will be in the Asia pacific region with 35 million in China and 10 million in
India

Domestic- travelling within your own country
International- leaving your country to travel
Mass tourism-Going to one place for an event in large masses of people
Types of tourists
Organised mass tourist- least adventurous, purchase a package with a fixed itinerary does not
venture from the hotel complex alone; is divorced from the local community
Make few decisions about the holiday
Individual mass tourist-maintains control over their itinerary and uses accommodations as a base
and may take tours or hire a car
The explorer-Arranges their own trip, may go off the beaten track but still wants comfortable
accommodation, is motivated to associate with local communities and may try and speak the local
language
The drifter-identify with the local community and may live and work within it, shuns contact with
tourist hotspots, takes risks in seeking new experiences, cultures and places.
Asia is the market leader in the medical tourism industry, with Thailand and
India vying for the number one spot. Thailand is slightly more expensive, but
does offer a better tourist experience and has a wider number of services
available.
Impact of Ecotourism
Ecotourism differs from traditional tourism in two main ways
It recognises that many tourists wish to learn about the natural environment and the cultural
environment
Aims to limit the impact of tourist facilities and visitors on the environment
Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment sustains the wellbeing of the
local people and involves interpretation and education
Three principles of Ecotourism
Involve the local communities in the development of ecotourism
Reduce the negative impact on the environment
Respect the rights of the local people
Ecotourism is the fastest growing sector in the tourism industry increasing at about 10 to 15 percent
per year

Improvement in transport and technology have increased our awareness of the world around us
Improved living standards, increased leisure and greater disposable incomes have all created
opportunities for people to travel and to experience new places and culture
