Book borrowing as a library activity:
Book borrowing means users can take information books away from the
library for the set period of time to study or read on their own.
Book borrowing involves registering users, selecting and checking out books
from circulation desk and recording the loan in a system and this is done by
always scanning barcodes.
Books are issued out for a set loan period where the due date is recorded
with an option to renew. Loan renewal can be done online, by phone and or
in person.
The users return the books to the circulation desk where the transaction is
reversed in the system, the user must adhere to the library set rules and
guidelines in regards to penalties for delaying with the books and proper use
of the book.
Book borrowing involves the following processes:
1. User registration: For one to borrow a book from the library he/she
must be a registered library member. Registration involves creating a
user account for online or E-library or taking various user details and
subsequently issuing a library ticket of identity card.
2. User verification: This includes confirming the identity and
authenticity of library users. User verification helps to ensure that only
authorized users can borrow and uses the books, managing user
accounts, tracking borrowing history, prevent theft and or misuse of
books.
3. Book selection: The library user then chooses the books he/she would
wish to borrow from the designated circulation collection.
4. Checkout: This is the actual borrowing of the book where users verify
the availability of the book, presents their library identity card or ticket
to the library staff who checks out the book by recording the loan
details in the library system and this can be done by scanning users
identity card and the books barcode.
The loan due date is stamped/ indicated on the book slip clearly
indicating for how long the book is borrowed.
5. Loan renewal: This allows users to extend the loan period of the
books they have checked out. It gives users more time to read and
enjoy the book, it also helps users to avoid fines for overdue books.
The user checks if the book is eligible for renewal and then submits a
renewal request, the library confirms the renewal and updates the due
date.
6. Returning of borrowed book: This is a very crucial activity where
the user returns the books to the library circulation desk. Returning of
the borrowed books makes them available for other users to borrow, it
also helps users to a void penalties for overdue.
7. Borrowed Book recall. This involves the library requesting the return
of the book that is already checked out to a user. The following are the
circumstances under which a borrowed book can be recalled, the book
is on high demand and another user needs access to it, there is need
for interlibrary loan purposes.
