Cause and effect relationships are a never-ending cycle found in stories and in the world around us.

A cause is the reason why something happened.

An effect is the result of what happened.

Examples:
Because Jack punched Julian in the mouth, Julian is telling the 5th graders that Jack has emotional
problems.
Summer and August told Jack to sit with them during lunch because Jack had nowhere else to sit.
Signal Words Words

There are words or phrases that indicate whether something is the cause or effect in a
sentence.

→ Jack wanted some normal time with other kids, that is why he didn’t sit with August on the first day.
→ Because Jack wanted some normal time with other kids, he didn’t sit with August on the first day.
