3. PROBLEM SELECTION: important issue which you think can be
solved using AI by doing survey or interview and which is aligned with
any of the SDGs.
Project aligning with SDG 11: Sustainable cities and economies and SDG
12: Responsible consumption and production.
PROBLEM: The irresponsible and inefficient consumption of energy
resources leads to significant wastage and misuse, causing strain on
limited energy supplies, increasing carbon emissions, and contributing to
environmental degradation. Despite rising awareness, there is still
inadequate monitoring of energy usage, lack of data-driven consumption
patterns, and limited adoption of sustainable practices. This imbalance
not only affects resource availability but also exacerbates energy
inequity, leaving marginalized communities disproportionately impacted.
4. USERS AFFECTED
Underprivileged and low-income communities buffer the most from
unequal access to energy resources due to mismanagement and
overconsumption by others.
Urban populations in densely populated areas face frequent power
shortages, load shedding, and higher energy costs caused by
unsustainable consumption patterns.
Students and remote workers. Experience disruptions in education and
productivity when energy resources are misused, leading to frequent
outages.
Small-scale businesses and local industries struggle to remain
operational due to unreliable energy availability and rising costs caused
by wasteful consumption.
Environmental ecosystems (indirectly affected) overconsumption leads
to increased fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, damaging
natural ecosystems and accelerating climate change.
Future generations will inherit scarcity of resources and environmental
damage if responsible consumption isn’t adopted now.
5. EMPATHY MAP
SAYS:
‘Electricity and water bills are really going up.’
‘Kids turn off the lights’
‘these leaky taps are wasting so much water.’
THINKS:
I should get those leaking pipes fixed.
Must remind to put off extra lights.
FEELS:
Worried, stressed, frustrated, responsible
DOES:
Buys water-flow-limiters for taps
Buys lower power consuming bulbs
INSTALLS OUR REMINDER/RECOMMENDATIONS APP!
6. PROBLEM STATEMENT + 5W1H
PROBLEM STATEMENT: For the issue of wasteful consumption of valuable
finite resources in cities and households, we need an easy-to-use,
accessible app that families and individuals can install on phones etc to
provide timely reminders to conserve resources, as well as provide useful,
usable information on where to acquire sustainable alternatives.
WHO:
Who is worst affected?
Who is responsible?
Who can make significant changes?
Who is involved?
Who will make the change?
WHAT:
What can be done?
What is the issue?
What is the cause?
What are the necessary steps?
What should be avoided?
What is unrealistic to expect?
WHERE:
Where does this problem occur?
Where do we start?
Where should we focus most?
Where is there no solution?
Where are there major loopholes?
WHEN:
When does max wastage occur?
When can the app give reminders?
When should the app stay silent?
When is the energy usage acceptable?
When is it unacceptable?
WHY:
Why wastage occurs?
Why is it a problem?
Why should people download our app?
Why cant we ignore this issue?
HOW:
How do we execute?
How do we improve?
How do we reach the masses?
How do we troubleshoot?
How do we differentiate between necessity and excess?
7. BRAINSTORM
After much discussion we have reached a BASE IDEA WHICH WILL BE
BUILT UPON FURTHER than seen in this Synopsis as these are still the
early stages.
CENTRAL IDEA: An app that reminds users to turn off extra lights, replace
leaking taps, etc. and more helpfully offers location-input based
suggestions on where to find/buy sustainable alternatives.
Prototype still under progress as of 21st AUGUST 2025.
