CHAPTER II BASIC THEORY

II.1 Definition of Operating System

An Operating System (OS) is a software that acts as an interface between

computer hardware components and the user. Every computer system must have at
least one operating system to run other programs. Applications like Browsers, MS
Office, Notepad Games, etc., need some environment to run and perform its tasks.
The OS helps you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to
speak the computer's language. It is not possible for the user to use any computer or
mobile device without having an operating system.

II.2 Introduction to MacOS

MacOS is the operating system that runs every Mac. You can do many
things on your Mac that you can't do on other computers. Because Macs are
designed specifically for the hardware that uses them - and vice versa. macOS
comes with a whole suite of beautifully designed applications. macOS works with
iCloud to keep your photos, documents, and other files up-to-date on all your
devices. Making your Mac work seamlessly with your iPhone and other Apple
devices. And it's been designed from the ground up with privacy and security in
mind. Mac OS Big Sur (version 11) is the seventeenth major release of Mac OS,
the operating system of Apple Inc. It was announced at Apple's Worldwide
Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 22, 2020, and released to the public on
November 12, 2020.

II.3 Introduction Apple Ecosystem

The term "Apple ecosystem" is used to describe the network of

interconnected Apple devices, software, and services that are designed to work
together seamlessly, providing users with a cohesive and integrated experience. This
ecosystem encompasses a range of hardware products, including the iPhone, iPad,
Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, as well as software and services such as iCloud,
iMessage, FaceTime, Airdrop, and Apple Music. The overarching objective of the
Apple ecosystem is to guarantee the seamless functioning of all its constituent
components, thereby facilitating unimpeded transitions between devices,
straightforward information sharing, and comprehensive access to services across
the entire range of Apple products.

CHAPTER III PROBLEM ANALYSIS

III.1 Universal Clipboard : Copy and Paste between Apple

The Universal Clipboard is a feature of macOS Big Sur that enables users to
seamlessly transfer content, including text, images, and files, between two Apple
devices, provided that both devices are signed into the same iCloud account and
have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. This feature enhances productivity by enabling a
smooth workflow across devices, such as the copying of text from an iPhone and
the subsequent pasting of said text directly onto a Mac, or vice versa.

The concept underlying the Universal Clipboard is aligned with Apple's

overarching objective of developing a unified and intuitive ecosystem, wherein
multiple devices operate in concert. As elucidated in a comprehensive account
published by Macworld, the Universal Clipboard exemplifies Apple's commitment
to enhancing user convenience through cross-device functionality. The article
underscores that this feature not only saves time but also reduces the friction of
transferring content between devices, thereby becoming a pivotal tool for users who
frequently switch between their Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
7

III.2 Handoff Feature

Figure 3.2 Handoff Feature (REF : https://support.apple.com/en-us/102426)

Handoff is a feature in macOS Big Sur that enables users to initiate a task on
one Apple device and then seamlessly continue it on another. To illustrate, one can
commence composing an email on an iPhone and conclude it on a Macintosh
computer without losing any progress. This continuity feature is part of Apple's
broader ecosystem integration, which is designed to enhance productivity by
allowing users to switch between devices effortlessly.
8

Figure 3.3 Handoff Feature (REF : https://support.apple.com/en-us/102426)

Handoff operates by utilising both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to detect nearby

Apple devices that are signed into the same iCloud account. Once a device is
detected, the activity is synchronised and made available for continuation on the
other device. As outlined in Apple's official documentation, Handoff is compatible
with a range of applications, including Mail, Safari, Pages, and certain third-party
applications that have integrated this functionality.
In summary, Handoff in macOS Big Sur is a powerful tool that exemplifies
Apple's commitment to creating a seamless and integrated user experience, allowing
users to move effortlessly between their devices without interruption.

III.3 Airdrop Upgrade

9

Airdrop is a feature in macOS Big Sur that enables users to wirelessly share
files, photos, and other content between Apple devices, including Macs, iPhones,
and iPads. In macOS Big Sur, Airdrop has undergone several enhancements,
resulting in enhanced reliability and faster data transfer across devices.

Figure 3.4 Airdrop

One notable enhancement in macOS Big Sur is the improved speed and
reliability of Airdrop transfers. As elucidated on Apple's official support page, the
latest iteration of Airdrop in macOS Big Sur upholds the platform's commitment to
user privacy. Files are transmitted via secure encryption, and the feature ensures that
transfers are only possible between devices that have explicitly been designated as
discoverable, thus preventing unauthorised file sharing.
In summary, the updates to Airdrop in macOS Big Sur reinforce its position
as a pivotal tool for seamless file sharing within the Apple ecosystem, offering
faster transfers, enhanced stability, and a more user-friendly interface.

III.4 Apple Pay

The latest version of macOS, Big Sur, incorporates a new payment system,
Apple Pay, which enables users to securely make payments on the web via the
10

Safari browser. The feature is integrated seamlessly across Apple devices. Purchases
may be completed on the user's Mac computer by utilising Touch ID or by
authenticating through an iPhone or Apple Watch. It is necessary for both devices to
be signed into the same Apple ID in order for this configuration to be effective. The
process entails selecting the Apple Pay option at the point of sale. In the event that
the user is employing Touch ID on a Mac computer, authentication can be
conducted directly. As an alternative, purchases can be confirmed using the iPhone's
Face ID or Apple Watch.

Prior to utilising Apple Pay, it is necessary for users to add a credit or debit
card to their Wallet application. The feature provides an additional layer of privacy
by enabling users to conceal their email addresses from merchants. It should be
noted, however, that the availability of Apple Pay may vary by region.

Big Sur marked a significant overhaul of Apple's desktop operating system. It
brought improvements in performance and stability. Significant changes to macOS
Big Sur with many new features are very beneficial, but there are still flaws in some
features.
IV.2 Suggestion

In transferring files, photos, and other data between devices. While possible,
the process is often more complicated than tight integration between apple own
product. And a system that can only be used on fellow apple user.
