The Hell

ForMatt Slick

Hell is one of those topics that makes people feel uncomfortable. We hear
Stories of hell describing it as a place of fire, demons, and torments.
eternal. Throughout history, many authors have written about this. For example,
Dante in his work The Inferno. Western culture is familiar with the concept. Still
Hollywood has made many movies about the subject. Whatever the context or
the belief, definitely, hell is taught in the Bible. But even so, the doctrine of
Hell is controversial. Some say that it is the tomb without consciousness. Others say
what is a place of correction and punishment, which is not eternal. Others say that it is a place
of agonizing and eternal punishment in the fire. Whatever this may be, hell is the total
absence of the favor of God.

The words associated with Hell

Gehenna

In the Old Testament, the word for hell is 'ge-hinnom' which means 'Valley of

and derived its origin from an Aramaic word that means 'the place of burning'.
In this place, some pagan kings practiced the sacrifice of human beings through
of the fire (2 Chronicles 28:3; 33:6; Jeremiah 7:31; 32:25).1In the New Testament, the word came to
to be associated with destruction by fire. The word 'gehenna' appears 12 times
in the New Testament and each of these is mentioned by Jesus. In the NT
"gehenna" is used as a condition and never as a place.

Hades

This word occurs ten times in the New Testament and corresponds to the word in the
Old Testament for 'sheol'. Jesus uses the word four times in Mt 11:23; 16:18; Lc
10:15; 16:23. The other six times occur in Acts 2:27, 31; Revelation 1:18; 6:8; 20:13, 14.

It was probably the 'underground dwelling of all the dead until the judgment. It was
divided into two departments: paradise or Abraham's bosom for the good, and
Gehenna or hell for the wicked.2In particular, in the account of Lazarus and the man
Rich man in Luke 16:19-31, this is the place of the dead who are aware of their wickedness.

Sheol or Seol

The Hebrew word Sheol possibly derives from a root that means 'to make a hollow', and
it was seen as the common receptacle of the dead. The word appears in the Old
Will, where it refers to the tomb.3This is a place and it is mentioned in Genesis.
37:35; Numbers 16:30, 33; Psalm 16:10. In Scripture, Sheol has many meanings: the
tomb, the underworld, the state of the dead. It is supposed to be located beneath the
earth. (Ezekiel 31:15, 17; Psalm 86:13).

Is Hell a Conscious Eternal Torment?

There are some groups of Christians and many cults that deny the idea that the
Hell, in a general sense, means eternal conscious punishment. Some argue that the
God's eternal punishment is the annihilation or non-existence of hell. Others say that it is
temporal and that eventually, everyone will be saved from hell. Perhaps the most common objection
It is common to think that a loving God would never punish people by tormenting them.
eternally. We agree that God is love (1 Jn 4:8), but He is also
just (Neh 9:32-33; 2 Th 1:6) and eternal (Ps 90:2; 1 Ti 1:17). God punishes the doer of
evil (Is 11:13) and this punishment will be eternal. But the question remains. Is this a
place of torment, conscious or not?

There are verses that can be interpreted to support the idea that the dead

Luke 16:19-31, Lazarus and the Rich Man

In Luke 16:19-31, the story of Lazarus and the rich man is found. Basically,
Lazarus is a poor man who suffers throughout his life. The rich man is simply
rich man. Both die. The rich man goes to Hades and Lazarus goes to the bosom of Abraham, another
term for paradise. In Hades, the rich man lifts his eyes and sees Lazarus far away.
He shouts to Abraham and asks for mercy since he is in flames and agony. Abraham tells him

What is it teaching? If the fire of hell is false and if we do not have consciousness

Hell is a real place. It is simply neither unconscious nor temporary.
This is eternal torment. Perhaps that's why Jesus spoke more about hell than about heaven and passed

eternal, where its victims are tormented both in their bodies
as in their minds, according to their sinful natures, the
current sins committed and the amount of spiritual light offered and
rejected by them. Hell is a place from where mercy and
the goodness of God has been taken away; where the wrath of God is revealed
like a consuming fire, terrifying; where the wicked live with their
vices without being able to carry them out in an endless torment.

In Matthew 13:47-50, the Lord Jesus narrated a parable about judgment.

In verses 49 and 50, the Lord describes the fate of the wicked:
This will be the end of the world; the angels will come out and take away the wicked.
of the righteous, and they will throw them into the fiery furnace; there will be the
weeping and the grinding of teeth.

When examining the words of the Lord, the first thing we should notice
hell is described as a furnace of fire. The furnace of
Nebuchadnezzar (whom we are told about in the Old Testament) was
heated seven times more than usual and is described as "a
"fiery furnace" (Daniel 3:23). John the Baptist spoke of
"unquenchable fire" (Luke 3:17) and Revelation describes hell
like "a lake of fire burning with sulfur" (Revelation 19:20).
Can we really imagine the horror that these talk about?

Hell is also described as a place of darkness. The Lord

Jesus talks about a guest who showed up to a wedding without a suit and was
thrown into 'the outer darkness' (Matthew 22:13). Judas writes of
those who are in hell, "for whom the darkness of the
darkness has been reserved forever" (Jude 13). Christopher
Love dice in his book Hell's Terrors: "The
darkness is terrible and human beings are prepared to
to fear the darkness more than the light: hell, consequently, is
described with this terrible image to make hearts
tremble, for it is not just about darkness, but the darkest of
the darkness.

Hell is compared to Tophet in Isaiah 30:33. Tophet was the place

to demonstrate that God himself will be the fire of hell. Hebrews 12:29

In Luke 16:19-26, Christ speaks of two men. One of them was rich.
(traditionally known as Divas or Epulón); the other was poor (due to
name Lazarus). Both died. The poor man was carried by angels to
Heaven and the rich man went to hell. The rich man did not go to such a place for being rich, nor the
poor to heaven for being poor. The Lord shows through this story
of contrasts that our circumstances can change

Verses 23 and 24 indicate that Dives was "in torment." What

What is the meaning of being in torment? This torment refers to
similar to the torment suffered by the body as well as by the soul. Like
we have seen, the human body will be tormented in a furnace of
fire. Every part of the body will feel the pain caused by that
fire. People with severe stomach pain may feel great

The consciousness of the human being will also be tormented in the

hell. Consciousness is the worm that does not die, of which speaks the
Scripture (Mark 9:48; Isaiah 66:24). It is said to God: 'remember
that during your life. Men will be physically tormented
with intense pain, but they will also be tormented by their own
memory. They will remember the times they heard the alarm and, not
paying attention to her, they mocked her. They will remember the times they were

compared to the torments of hell.

Jonathan Edwards, in a sermon on The Future Punishment of the

wicked, talks about how they are unable to find a single one
moment of rest in hell: "They will find nothing to ease their
punishments in hell. They will never find a place of rest there;
no secret corner that is cooler than the others, where
they can have a little rest, a small reduction of the
gravity of their torment. They will never find a stream or spring of
cold water nowhere in that world of torment; no, not even
not even a drop of water to quench their throats. They will not have
a companion that gives them a minimum of comfort, or offers a minimum
well-being. They will not find a place where they can be and rest and
take a breath, if only for a minute, because they will be tormented with
fire and sulfur. They will have no rest day or night for the
ages of ages.

THE ETERNITY OF HELL

The most terrifying aspect of hell is its duration. Hell
it is eternal, that is, forever, without end. Can you understand the
eternity? No formula or mathematical equation can explain it.
Your mind cannot conceive eternity, and yet, it is real.
despite everything. This alone aspect of hell should make the
men will cry out in regret. It is not strange that skeptics
of all time have attacked the eternal nature of hell,
replacing it with doctrines such as the annihilation of the unbelievers.
Let's take another look at the Scriptures to verify the nature
eternal hell and try to understand eternity better. After
we will look at why hell has to be eternal.

And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur,
where the beast and the false prophet are; and they will be tormented

better than the expression 'for ages and ages'? The Scripture not
contains another greater expression that denotes eternity other than "for the
ages of ages", because it is the same statement that is applied to the
eternal existence of God Himself: "To the one who is seated on the throne, to
who lives forever and ever" (Revelation 4:9). Is there anyone who

Does it use the same expression for both?

We cannot form a very strong idea about this issue, but,

to help them in their way of conceiving it, imagine yourself in the middle of
a bonfire or a large oven, where their pain is much greater
greater than that caused by the accidental rubbing of a coal
burning, since its heat is superior. Also imagine that its
bodies are to be held in that place for a quarter of an hour, in
full awareness, how great the horror of entering such
oven! And how long that quarter of an hour would seem to them! After
having endured it for a minute, how unbearable it would be to think that
there were still another fourteen missing. But what would be the effect produced in
their souls, if you knew you would have to stay in that
torment during twenty-four hours... or a whole year... or thousands of
Years? Oh, then, how their hearts would sink if they knew.
they would have to suffer it year after year, what would be the end! Without arriving
never at the end! That after a million million centuries, their
torment would not be closer to its end than at the beginning, and that never
they will be released! But the torment in hell will be immense
superior to what this illustration represents.

The Lord Jesus, describing the day of the great final judgment, refers to the
separation of the wicked from the righteous with these words: "And these

someday in the future, the blessing of the righteous in heaven? Naturally
not; however, the same Greek word used in this
the verse for the eternal life of the righteous is the one used for the
eternal punishment for the unjust. Hell will last as long as heaven.

In hell there will be different degrees of punishment determined for

each human being according to some passages of Scripture.
Luke 12:47-48 says: "And that servant

according to his will, he will receive many lashes; but he who does not

To whom much has been given, much will be required of them." In Matthew 11:24 Christ says:
I tell you that on the day of judgment the punishment will be more bearable for the
land of Sodom that is for you." The verses from Matthew indicate that the
the people of Capernaum will receive greater punishment on the day of judgment than
those who lived in the depraved Sodom. The verses of
Lucas speaks of a distinction in judgment based on the amount of
light received: some will receive many lashes while others
few will receive.
Those who commit greater or more sins than others will receive greater punishment.

who profess the Christian faith, but are not really Christians, will be
more severely punished than the rest (Matthew 23:14-15). The Lord

Is it true that annihilation is the only thing that comes after death?
The presence of different degrees of punishment only makes sense in light of
of the ability to feel punishment. In what way can it be said that
it would have been better for Judas not to have been born if annihilation is
everything that awaited him? Annihilation or extinction is not punishment in
absolute.

Every time the unbeliever sins, he increases the level of his torment in the
hell. The person who sins twice as much as another with similar light will receive
the double punishment. Every day that the sinner continues living and
breathing here on earth without regret adds to his punishment in the
hell. Romans 2:5 says: 'But because of your stubbornness and your
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath
and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God." The Lord Jesus urged to
the righteous to make treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

The first reason to consider is the one that Christopher Love has just

even the last penny" (Luke 12:59). Men cannot give
nothing in exchange for his sin. No amount of punishment in the
hell, no matter how long it lasts, can never expiate the
sins. It is impossible, therefore hell must be eternal.

Thirdly, hell must be eternal because the Scriptures say

that the worm that corrodes the consciousness of man in hell

APPLICATION FOR BELIEVERS AND NON-BELIEVERS

The prophets of the Old Testament constantly warn us about
the dangers of hell: "Who among us will dwell with the fire

THE STATE OF THE SOUL BETWEEN PHYSICAL DEATH AND THE

RESURRECTION

Between the death of the physical body and the resurrection, the souls of the saved...

Matthew 22:31, "But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read

of Isaac and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

And he said to Jesus, 'Remember me when you come into your kingdom.'
Then Jesus said to him: Truly, I tell you that today you will be with me in the
paradise.

torment. In both cases, the soul is aware and has memory. The story
from Luke 16, it is not a parable, because the name of one of the

II Corinthians 5:6,8, "... knowing that while we are at home in the body,
we are absent from the Lord... but we trust, and we would rather be
absent from the body, and present with the Lord.

THE SKY

Here we refer to heaven as the place where God dwells, the desired place.
by humans to have eternal rest.

Heaven is the dwelling place of God.

Matthew 6:9, "Our Father who art in heaven."

Matthew 5:34, "Do not swear at all; neither by heaven, for it is the throne
of God.

Ephesians 4:10, "He who descended is the same one who ascended far above"

Luke 24:51, '... he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.'

Acts 7:56, '... I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man.'

Mark 1:10; Luke 3:21, '... he saw the heavens open and the Spirit descending like a dove.'
that descended upon him.

The sky is the place of all blessings for the saved:

... your reward is great in heaven.

... you will have treasure in heaven.

... your names are written in heaven.

...make yourselves a treasure in heaven that does not deplete.

Luke 15:17, 'there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.'

Philippians 3:20, '... but our citizenship is in heaven.'

John 14:2, "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you;"
I would have said it; I am going, therefore, to prepare a place for you. And if I go and you
prepare a place, I will come again, and will take you to myself, that where I am
I am, you all are too.

3. The New Jerusalem will descend from heaven:

Revelation 21:2, "And I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down"
from heaven, from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard
a great voice from heaven saying: Behold, the tabernacle of God with the
men, and he will dwell with them; and they shall be his people, and God himself will be
with them as their God." (Read the entire chapter 21).

In heaven, humans will be like the angels of God:

Matthew 22:39, "For in the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage"

Luke 26:35, "For they can no longer die, for they are equal to the angels,

HADES: PARADISE AND THE PLACE OF TORMENT

THE HADES BEFORE THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST

The passages where the word appears make it clear that Hades was divided.
previously in two parts, the place where the salvos were located, and the place
where the unsaved were. The first one was called 'Paradise' or 'Bosom'
from Abraham." Both names come from the Talmud, but they were adopted by
Christ in Luke 16:22; 23:43.

The deceased who were saved were with Abraham; they were conscious and were
consoled, Luke 16:25. The thief who believed would be with Christ that same
day in Paradise. The lost were separated from the saved by "a great
"sima" (Luke 16:26). The representative of the lost who are found today in the
Hades is the rich man from Luke 16. He was alive, aware, in full exercise.
of their faculties, memory, etc., and in torments.

2. HADES SINCE THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST

In the Bible, there is no indication that there has been any change.
regarding the condition of the unsaved who are in the place of torment.
In the judgment of the Great White Throne, (Revelation 20:11, Hades them
they will be delivered, will be judged, and thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:13, "And
the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up
the dead that were in them; and they were judged each one according to their works.

3. Yes, there was a change in Paradise. Pablo was taken there:

I Corinthians 12:14, "I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (if
in the body, I do not know; if out of the body, I do not know; God knows) was
taken up to the third heaven.

It is believed that Ephesians indicates when this change occurred:

had also descended first to the lowest parts of the earth?

Lord", (Job 19:26, 27; I Corinthians 15:52).

THE ETERNAL PUNISHMENT

The doctrine of the fire hell is taught in the New Testament. It is not a
place where the lost are annihilated and disappear forever; it is a
place of eternal torment, without end.

Jesus Christ referred to him many times:

Matthew 5:22, "... will be exposed to the hell of fire."

... and not that your whole body be thrown into hell.

Matthew 10:28, "... who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Matthew 18:9, "...having two eyes to be cast into hellfire."

Matthew 23:15, '... you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.'

Matthew 23:33, 'How will you escape the condemnation of hell?'

And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Immediately after dying, the unsaved go to torment.

Luke 16:23-25, "And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment... I am

tormented in this flame... and you tormented.
Those who deny that the soul is aware between physical death and the
resurrection, they assert that the passage from Luke 16 is a parable. But in the
Parables never mention proper names. This is a story that
mention the beggar Lazarus.

It is the place of punishment for the angels who sinned.

II Peter 2:4. "... casting them into hell, delivered them to chains of darkness."

4. It is the punishment of those from Sodom and Gomorrah:

Jude 7, "... suffering the punishment of eternal fire."

It is an eternal, endless punishment:

Mark 9:44, "... where their worm does not die, and the fire is never extinguished."
turn off

Luke 3:17, '... and he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.'

A place of weeping and terror:

... there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

7. In addition to the current torment, the unsaved will suffer the second death: the
lake of fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.

Then he will also say to those on his left: Depart from me,
cursed, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Revelation 20:5-6 "But the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years."
They fulfilled a thousand years. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy
blessed is he who has part in the first resurrection; the second death has no power over him.
power over these.

Revelation 20:19, "And the devil who deceived them was cast into the lake of
fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were; and they will be
tormented day and night for ages of ages.

Revelation 20:14, 'And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire.'
This is the second death.

Revelation 21:8, "in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death"

Catholics believe that the unsaved will go to a purgatory where they will suffer for
a time to atone for their sins; and that the prayers of the living
will be taken from there, to enter heaven. The Bible says that the dead who do not
they were saved are now in torment, and cannot change their situation.

The Bible mentions several judgments:

works. And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades
they delivered the dead that were in them: and they were judged each one according to
