The Hell
The Hell
ForMatt Slick
Hell is one of those topics that makes people feel uncomfortable. We hear
Stories of hell describing it as a place of fire, demons, and torments.
eternal. Throughout history, many authors have written about this. For example,
Dante in his work The Inferno. Western culture is familiar with the concept. Still
Hollywood has made many movies about the subject. Whatever the context or
the belief, definitely, hell is taught in the Bible. But even so, the doctrine of
Hell is controversial. Some say that it is the tomb without consciousness. Others say
what is a place of correction and punishment, which is not eternal. Others say that it is a place
of agonizing and eternal punishment in the fire. Whatever this may be, hell is the total
absence of the favor of God.
In the Old Testament, the word for hell is 'ge-hinnom' which means 'Valley of
and derived its origin from an Aramaic word that means 'the place of burning'.
In this place, some pagan kings practiced the sacrifice of human beings through
of the fire (2 Chronicles 28:3; 33:6; Jeremiah 7:31; 32:25).1In the New Testament, the word came to
to be associated with destruction by fire. The word 'gehenna' appears 12 times
in the New Testament and each of these is mentioned by Jesus. In the NT
"gehenna" is used as a condition and never as a place.
Hades
This word occurs ten times in the New Testament and corresponds to the word in the
Old Testament for 'sheol'. Jesus uses the word four times in Mt 11:23; 16:18; Lc
10:15; 16:23. The other six times occur in Acts 2:27, 31; Revelation 1:18; 6:8; 20:13, 14.
It was probably the 'underground dwelling of all the dead until the judgment. It was
divided into two departments: paradise or Abraham's bosom for the good, and
Gehenna or hell for the wicked.2In particular, in the account of Lazarus and the man
Rich man in Luke 16:19-31, this is the place of the dead who are aware of their wickedness.
Sheol or Seol
The Hebrew word Sheol possibly derives from a root that means 'to make a hollow', and
it was seen as the common receptacle of the dead. The word appears in the Old
Will, where it refers to the tomb.3This is a place and it is mentioned in Genesis.
37:35; Numbers 16:30, 33; Psalm 16:10. In Scripture, Sheol has many meanings: the
tomb, the underworld, the state of the dead. It is supposed to be located beneath the
earth. (Ezekiel 31:15, 17; Psalm 86:13).
There are verses that can be interpreted to support the idea that the dead
they are not aware: Ecclesiastes 9:5: '...but the dead know nothing,...'4and Psalm 146:4:
...On that same day, their thoughts perish.
verses compare the dead to sleeping: Acts 13:36; 1 Corinthians 15:1-6; 1st
1 Thessalonians 4:13; but these last verses barely compare the similarity.
between the appearance of the dead and the appearance of someone sleeping.
Numbers 16:30, 33: "But if the Lord does something new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them
swallow with all their things, and descend alive to the Sheol, then you will know that these
men angered the Lord...33And they, with all that they had, descended alive into Sheol, and
the earth covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.
Cast into the outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth
Matthew 8:12: "But the children of the kingdom will be cast into outer darkness; there will be weeping
I cry and the gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:41-42: "The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom...
all who cause stumbling, and those who commit iniquity,42and they will throw them in the oven
of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." See also Matthew 13:50.
Matthew 3:12: "His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor; and gather his wheat into the
barn, and will burn the straw in a fire that will never be extinguished.
Fire hell
Matthew 5:22: '...and whoever says to him, 'You fool!' will be in danger of hell fire.'
Also Matthew 5:29, 30.
Fiery hell
Matthew 18:8-9: "Therefore, if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you;"
it is better for you to enter life lame or crippled, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown out
in the eternal fire.9And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away; it is better for you
to enter life with one eye, rather than having two eyes and being thrown into hell
fire.
Eternal Fire
Then he will also say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed,
eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'
Jude 7: "as Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities, which in the same way
that those, having fornicated and pursued vices against nature, were placed
for example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.
Eternal Punishment
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
The word 'eternal' in both places is 'aionios' which means: 1) Without beginning and end: the
that has always been and always will be; 2) Without beginning; 3) Without end, it will never cease, it will be
eternal. The word "punishment" is the word "kolasis" and it means "to punish, with the
implication that results in severe suffering; to punish, punishment.5

Still, this is a parable. The question then is: What if this is a parable?
What is it teaching? If the fire of hell is false and if we do not have consciousness
after death, then Jesus is using false doctrines to teach a
truth. The parables illustrate the truth. If this is a parable, what does it symbolize
consciousness after death? What does the agony in flames symbolize? Are they not
Are these real? Of course they are real.
Conclusion
Hell is a real place. It is simply neither unconscious nor temporary.
This is eternal torment. Perhaps that's why Jesus spoke more about hell than about heaven and passed
a long time warning people not to end up in that place. After

A description of hell
Hell is an unquenchable fire furnace, a place of torment.
eternal, where its victims are tormented both in their bodies
as in their minds, according to their sinful natures, the
current sins committed and the amount of spiritual light offered and
rejected by them. Hell is a place from where mercy and
the goodness of God has been taken away; where the wrath of God is revealed
like a consuming fire, terrifying; where the wicked live with their
vices without being able to carry them out in an endless torment.
When examining the words of the Lord, the first thing we should notice
hell is described as a furnace of fire. The furnace of
Nebuchadnezzar (whom we are told about in the Old Testament) was
heated seven times more than usual and is described as "a
"fiery furnace" (Daniel 3:23). John the Baptist spoke of
"unquenchable fire" (Luke 3:17) and Revelation describes hell
like "a lake of fire burning with sulfur" (Revelation 19:20).
Can we really imagine the horror that these talk about?

In Luke 16:19-26, Christ speaks of two men. One of them was rich.
(traditionally known as Divas or Epulón); the other was poor (due to
name Lazarus). Both died. The poor man was carried by angels to
Heaven and the rich man went to hell. The rich man did not go to such a place for being rich, nor the
poor to heaven for being poor. The Lord shows through this story
of contrasts that our circumstances can change
drastically when we move from time to eternity. No

I have dealt harshly in this life, do not let it happen after the

We want to carefully note what Scripture says about

better than the expression 'for ages and ages'? The Scripture not
contains another greater expression that denotes eternity other than "for the

The presence of different degrees of punishment only makes sense in light of
of the ability to feel punishment. In what way can it be said that
it would have been better for Judas not to have been born if annihilation is
everything that awaited him? Annihilation or extinction is not punishment in
absolute.
Every time the unbeliever sins, he increases the level of his torment in the
hell. The person who sins twice as much as another with similar light will receive
the double punishment. Every day that the sinner continues living and
breathing here on earth without regret adds to his punishment in the
hell. Romans 2:5 says: 'But because of your stubbornness and your
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath
and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God." The Lord Jesus urged to
the righteous to make treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

The first reason to consider is the one that Christopher Love has just
