CLE1003 – SURVEYING LAB
Plane Table Surveying
Problem Statement
Calculate the area of the closed traverse by using the plane table survey. Take at least 6 number
of ranging rods along the circumference of the boundary. The angles between two ranging rods with the
center of the plane table instrument station should be between 300 and 1200. The drawing of the traverse
can be done using AutoCAD or manual drawing sheet. The scale for the drawing can be taken as 1:100 or
1: 200. Express the area in hectares.
Aim
To calculate the area formed by the closed traverse by using the plane table surveying by using the
observed measurements.
Apparatus Required
1. Drawing board, drawing sheet, pencil and calculator
2. Alidade (for sighting the object)
3. Trough compass (for marking north direction on drawing sheet)
4. U-fork (to indicate which point on table is vertically over the station point)
5. Tape for length measurement
Procedure
1. Select a point P within inside the boundary such that all corner points ( ranging rods) are visible
from it.
2. Set up the plane table at P and do all necessary adjustments.
3. Using U-fork, selected point P is transferred to drawing sheet.
4. Mark direction of magnetic meridian with the help of trough compass right top corner of sheet.
5. Keep the alidade on P and sight all corner points A, B, C, D, etc. and draw rays on table along
fiducially edge using pencil.
6. Measure distance PA, PB, PC, PD, etc. by tape.
7. Taking suitable scale plot these distances on sheets. Connect then all the corner points by a line.
You will get the layout map with the boundary of the entire area.
8. Calculate the area enclosed with the help of a digital planimeter.
Plot drawn using AutoCAD as per the observations
Calculations
Result
1. The layout map prepared using plane table surveying which is attached herewith is checked and
verified.
2. The total area enclosed is found to be ____0.064346 hectares____
