kilometers and steep, rugged terrain. In response, the Principality has pioneered an
innovative approach, engineering extensive vertical and subterranean infrastructure,
earning it the nickname "the Underground City." This strategy is fundamental to
preserving limited surface space and efficiently managing traffic.
The core of Monaco's urban planning is its multi-layered and innovative mobility network,
designed to move its dense population (~38,000 residents) and visitors efficiently, reduce
reliance on private vehicles, and leverage its challenging vertical landscape. This includes
public buses, an extensive network of edestrian lifts, and rail services.
