III. IELTS SPEAKING - Phần 1
Part 1: Key Facts and Common Mistakes
Key facts about IELTS Speaking Part 1
Useful information
• Time: 4-5 minutes
• You will be asked questions about you and your life.
• Common topics:
       Your home
       Your family
       Your work or study
       Your hometown
       Your likes or dislikes
       Your interests
• You will only be assessed on your English language skills, not on the content of what you
actually say.
There are hundreds of possible questions the examiner could ask so you can not predict what you
will get, but they will come from just a handful of topics. It will be easy to think up answers as
the questions are all about you, a subject you know everything about. You can't possibly give a
wrong answer.
Mistakes to Avoid
• Give very short answers
• Give very long answers
• Memorise answers
• Overthink answers
• Freeze if you get 'unusual' questions
The examiner wants to hear you talk, so giving single words or very short answers to questions is
not going to get you many marks.
On the other hand, do not ramble on and on. They have around 12 questions to ask you in 4-5
minutes. If you spend 2 of those minutes answering a simple question on, for example, where
you live, there will not be time for all the questions and you will miss out on some of the marks.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 answers should be 2-3 sentences long.
Never memorise answers. It is a waste of time as you will not know what questions you are
going to get. If you do use a memorised answer, it will be obvious to the examiner. Your speech
will not be as fluent as when giving a spontaneous answer and you could actually lose marks.
This is a test of your spoken language, not your memory. Have confidence in your skills and let
your answers flow naturally.
Your fluency will also suffer if you overthink your answers. The examiner is not trying to
discover how intelligent you are or whether you can devise clever answers, they just want to hear
you speak. Answer their questions using appropriate language and they will be happy.
What does sometimes throw candidates in IELTS Speaking Part 1 is getting an unusual, random
question such as What do you think of robots? These types of questions seem so strange that they
can stop people in their tracks. They either stumble and stutter over their words or literally freeze
if they can not think what to say.
Examiner Question:
What do you think of robots?
These types of questions seem so strange that they can stop people in their tracks. They either
stumble and stutter over their words or literally freeze if they can not think what to say.
These types of questions seem so strange that they can stop people in their tracks. They either

1. It does not matter what you say as long as you say something.
2. It is fine to say that the subject is something you have never thought about. Say this then just
give the best answer you can come up with.
So, with our robot question, you might come up with an answer like:
Model answer:
They aren't something I've ever thought much about, but it would be great to have one that did
the housework and cooked dinner occasionally.
The main thing is not to panic if an unusual question comes up.
You are bound to be nervous during your test, especially at the start. Use IELTS Speaking Part 1
as a warm-up for the rest of the test. The questions will be easy for you to answer, so try to relax
and calm your nerves. Slow, deep breaths can help.
                                               Lesson
Part 1: Developing Your Answers
Giving the correct length answers is very important.
Which of these answers to this question is the best?
Examiner Question:
Do you like music?
Mina:
Yes, I do.
Jennie:
Most definitely. I go to lots of live gigs as I've got a friend who's in a band. At home, I like to
relax to classical music.
Both Mina and Jennie have answered the question but Jennie's answer is clearly the better one as
it's longer and shows off her ability to communicate well in English. Mina's answer gives the
examiner very little to assess her on.
Here is a great rule to follow to get the perfect length answer to IELTS Part 1 questions:
• Answer the question
• Add an extra piece of information
This extra information could be an added detail or background information. If you do this, you
will not go far wrong.
Paraphrasing
The examiner will be particularly impressed if you are able to paraphrase their question rather
than repeating the vocabulary they used. You do not need to do this for every question, but do so
when it is easy to replace key words with synonyms.
Have a look at this IELTS Speaking Part 1 question and the two sample answers.
Which is the best answer, and why?
Examiner Question:
Have you visited any foreign countries?
Answer 1:
Yes, I've visited two foreign countries, the UK and Egypt. My favourite foreign country was the
UK because it's so different to my own country. Another country I want to visit is France.
Answer 2:
Yes, I've been abroad a couple of times, first to the UK, then to Egypt. I particularly enjoyed the
UK because it's so different from my own country. I'd also love to travel to France.
Answer 2 is the best.
Again, both versions answer the question but answer 1 repeats the verb to visit, and the words
foreign and countries, all of which are in the question, several times.
In answer 2, the question has been paraphrased with the synonym abroad, and to travel to has
been used instead of visit.
Take a moment to really focus on these differences.
Also, compare the language used to express which country was their favourite.
The final sentence, about where the speaker would like to visit next, is not strictly necessary, but
is in context with the question so is fine. It also enables the speaker to use the future tense.
7 Ways to Develop an Extended Answer
In IELTS Speaking Part 1, the examiner will be looking for a good range of vocabulary and
grammatical structures. Developing your answers in different ways will ensure that you impress
them with your language skills.
Here are 7 different ways you can extend your answers:
1. Explanation 2. Combined Details 3. Examples
4. Frequency 5. Contrast 6. Past Comparisons
7. Future
Examiner Question:
How often do you socialise with friends?
Simple answer:
I socialise with friends several times a week.
1. Explanation
The easiest way to add extra information to a simple answer is to include an explanation.
Connective words like because are ideal for this.
Extended answer:
   ● I socialise with friends most evenings after work and at weekends because I live on my
own which often gets me down. Going out with friends or having them around means that
       I don't feel so lonely.
   ● I cook most days of the week because I enjoy preparing fresh and healthy meals for
myself. It also helps me save money compared to eating out.
2. Combined Details
Another simple way to extend your answer is to join two pieces of information with the word
and.
Extended answer:
   ● During the week, I generally meet up with friends two evenings after work and on
Saturdays, I go shopping with my best friend. Sundays I save for seeing my family.
   ● I usually cook dinner every evening, and on weekends, I often make a big breakfast. I
also prepare lunches in advance for the week.
3. Examples
A great way to develop your answers in IELTS
Speaking Part 1 is to add an example.
Extended answer:
   ● I usually see my closest friends several times a week. Like this week, I'm meeting my
best friend for a drink this evening, then we're going to the cinema with some girls from
work on Friday, and on Saturday we're all meeting up at a party.
   ● I typically cook most days. For example, this week, I made pasta on Monday, grilled
chicken with vegetables on Tuesday, and a stir-fry on Wednesday. Tonight, I'm planning
to try a new recipe for homemade pizza.
4. Frequency
Words expressing frequency are invaluable for developing answers. Common words include:
always (adverb) at all times; on all occasions
usually (adverb) in the way that most often happens
normally (adverb) under usual or ordinary conditions; as a rule
generally (adverb) in most cases; usually
often (adverb) frequently; many times
frequently (adverb) regularly or habitually; often
sometimes (adverb) occasionally; at times
occasionally (adverb) at infrequent or irregular intervals; now and then
seldom (adverb) not often; rarely
rarely (adverb) not often; infrequently
never (adverb) at no time in the past or future; not ever
hardly ever (adverb) almost never
Extended answer:
   ● I normally see friends most days of the week, especially my best friend who l generally
catch up with after work. On the weekends, a group of us often go to the park to play
       football or chill out.
   ● I generally cook almost every day, especially during weekdays. On weekends, I often
cook more elaborate meals and sometimes bake desserts as well.
5. Contrast
Connectives that express contrast are equally useful for extending answers. For example:
but (conjunction) used to introduce a word or phrase that contrasts with what was said before
although (adverb) despite the fact that
however (adverb) used to introduce a statement that contrasts with something that has just been
said
even though (phrase) despite the fact that; although
despite (preposition) used to introduce a fact that makes the other part of the sentence surprising
while (conjunction) during the time that something is happening; at the same time as something
else is happening
Extended answer:
   ● I try to meet up with friends several times a week but rarely on a Sunday because that's
when I visit my family. However, every few months I cook a barbeque Sunday lunch and
invite both my friends and family around.
   ● I try to cook most days of the week, but I usually order takeout on Fridays because it's the
end of a busy work week. However, on Saturdays, I like to experiment with new recipes.
6. Past Comparisons
Sometimes in IELTS Speaking Part 1, you will want to compare the present situation to what
happened in the past. The phrase “used to” is useful here.
Extended answer:
   ● I used to socialise with my friends every day but I don't see them so often now that I have
to work night shifts and can't go out in the evenings so much. We probably meet up just a
       few times a month now.
   ● I used to cook nearly every day when I was living alone, but now that I share a house
with friends, we take turns cooking, so I only cook about three times a week.
7. Future
Finally, there will be times when you want to make a comparison between what happens now
and what you think will happen in the future or what you want or intend to do in the future.
Extended answer:
Currently, I hardly see my friends at all as I spend all my spare time studying for my
IELTS exam. When I pass the exam, I’ll meet up with my mates most evenings like I
used to do and spend weekends with them as well.
Currently, I cook most days of the week, but when I start my new job next month, I might
have less time to cook. I plan to batch cook on weekends to ensure I have homemade
       meals ready during busy weekdays.

IV. PART 2 + 3
★ Part 2: Key Facts and Common Mistakes
IELTS Speaking Part 2 has a very different format to Parts 1 and 3. Understanding it is crucial to
success, and having the right strategy to tackle it, vital.
Useful information
• Time: 3-4 minutes
• The examiner will give you a cue card with a topic written on it.
• It will also have 3-5 bullet points telling you what to include in your talk.
• You will be given 1 minute for preparation during which you are allowed to make notes.
• You will be asked to speak on this topic for up to 2 minutes.
• The examiner will probably ask you one or two questions about your topic.
It is impossible to predict the subject you will be asked about. The range of potential topics is
vast.
Do not waste your energy stressing about this, worrying that it will be a subject you know
nothing about. It will be what it will be, but you can be sure that it will be related to you in some
way, for example:
• something about you
• something that has happened to you
• something you have experienced
With the strategies and techniques provided in this book, you will be able to speak for 2 minutes
on any subject you are given.
Example Cue card:
Describe a place you like near water.
You should say:
• where this place is
• what you did at this place
• who you went there with and explain why you liked this place.
The topic is stated in the first sentence. In this case, it is a place near water.
The 3 bullet points and final clause are a guide as to what you should talk about but you don't
have to stick rigidly to them.
5 Reasons why people do not do well in IELTS Speaking Part 2
Obviously, you need to be able to use the English language effectively and competently and to
show skill in the four key skills on which you'll be assessed:
Fluency and Cohesion
Vocabulary
Grammar
Pronunciation
Each of these holds 25% of the marks.
However, there are 5 things that frequently result in candidates getting a far lower score that they
are capable of and they have little to do with their language ability.
                                         Mistakes to Avoid
• Do not speak for the full 2 minutes
• Run out of things to say
• Have an unstructured talk
• Read their notes rather than speak naturally
• Panic because they think they know nothing about the topic
1. How long to speak for
A common question from applicants is, Do l have to talk for exactly 2 minutes?. The simple
answer is No. Keep talking until the examiner stops you, which will be at around 2 minutes. If
you stop before 1 minute 40 or 1 minute 50, this will probably affect your score as you may lose
marks for Fluency and Cohesion.
2. Why people finish early
It is because they have run out of things to say.
The reason they do not know what else to say is generally that they have not used their 1-minute
planning time wisely. This is most likely because they do not have a good planning strategy.
Poor planning leads to an unstructured answer with ideas popping up all over the place and not
really tying together.
3. Reading out notes
Another classic mistake candidates make is to read out their notes rather than talking naturally.
This has several consequences.
If you read your notes, your speech will sound like reading, not speaking. It will have unnatural
fluency, sentence stress and pronunciation.
This will not please the examiner. They are there to test your speaking skills, not your reading
ability.
Focussing too closely on your notes while speaking may also cause you to move quickly from
one bullet point to the next without developing your ideas. You are likely to reach the end with
lots of time still to go and nothing more to say.
Use your notes as a guide only!
4. Do not panic
Do not be that candidate who completely wastes their planning time because they are convinced
they do not know anything about the subject they have been asked to talk about and go into a
brain meltdown.
Most topics are related to everyday life and common experiences. It is guaranteed that if you are
asked about any subject in these categories, you could mention at least three or four things you
know about it, even if it is a topic you believe you know nothing about.
Three or four things are enough to create an answer.
Then you just need a few strategies for developing your talk around them.
The examiner will not be expecting a degree level answer. They just want to know what you
know about the topic - a few facts and your own thoughts, opinions and feelings.
The content of your talk is not nearly as important as how you say it, that is, your fluency,
grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.
Be confident that you can deal with any topic because you can.
Cue card
Now let's examine the cue card.
In the introduction to IELTS Speaking Part 2, the examiner will give you a cue card.
Example Cue card:
Describe something healthy you enjoy doing.
You should say:
• what you do
• where you do it
• who you do it with
and explain why you think doing this is healthy.
The most important words on the cue card are the first sentence. This is your topic. This is what
you must talk about for your 2 minutes. The bullet points are there as a guide as to what you
could include in your talk.
There are many other things you could talk about as well. You do not have to stick to the
suggestions in the bullet points.
Most people only talk about the bullet points and they work through them one by one in the order
they are written. It is not a problem if you want to do this but if it is the only strategy you have,
you are very likely to run out of things to say before the 2 minutes is up.
You may find that the suggestions in the bullet points do not totally relate to your experience of
the topic or they are not really what you want to say about it. This is another good reason to have
other options for developing your talk.
* The key is to stay focussed on the topic. Use the bullet points as a guide but do not limit
yourself to them. You certainly do not have to use all of them and you will not lose marks if you
miss some of them and you will not lose marks if you miss some of them out.
Knowing this will put you ahead of most students because the majority do not know it.
So to summarise:
• The bullet points are there as a guide
• You do not have to use them all
• You can talk about other things as well
• The key is to stay focussed on the topic
What else you talk about will depend on the topic but here are some ideas:
 Your thoughts Background Present situation
 Your opinion Descriptions Future situation
Your feelings Examples Anything else relevant...
Having a good selection of additional ideas to potentially talk about will give you the tools to
tackle any topic that comes along.
If you are lucky, you will get a topic you are enthusiastic or passionate about, something quite
personal to you such as,
Describe a favourite photograph.
A topic can be quite specific or a much wider, general subject such as,
Describe a city you have visited
Now that you have a good understanding of how to approach IELTS Speaking Part 2 and the
main mistakes to avoid, it is time to look at some specific planning strategies and sample
answers.
Part 2: Question Prompts
One of the resources most requested by students is IELTS Speaking samples for Part 2 of the
test. But be warned, you could read hundreds of different sample talks without actually learning
very much about how to create good answers yourself and achieving the score you want.
But that is not going to happen to you because the IELTS Speaking samples in this lesson will
teach you exactly how to develop excellent 2-minute talks that will earn you the marks you need.
However, just reading them and memorising the strategies will not help you unless you actually
practise using them repeatedly in corresponding exercises in the following steps.
The number one way to ensure success is to have a clear planning strategy that allows you to use
your 1-minute planning time wisely.
Poor planning leads to an unstructured talk with ideas popping up all over the place and not
really tying together. Fortunately, it is an easy problem to solve.
So let's begin looking at the actual strategies you can use to develop your answer in the 60
seconds you have before you start talking. One minute does not sound long, but it is long
enough if you have a plan.
You will be given some paper to make notes and will be allowed to look at your notes while you
are talking. You will not be marked on them.
If your mind likes to work in a structured way, you will probably find this method the easiest to
use.
Example Cue card:
Describe something healthy you enjoy doing.
You should say:
• what you do
• where you do it
• who you do it with
and explain why you think doing this is healthy.
                                        Answering strategy
1. Pick out the key words from the bullet points.
2. Make some notes using each underlined word as a headline.
Decide which note to talk about (you do not have to use them all).
Put notes in a logical order.
5. Give your 2-minute talk refer to your notes if you need to.
                                                Step 1
First, pick out the key words from the bullet points:
Example Cue card:
Describe something healthy you enjoy doing.
You should say:
• what you do
• where you do it
• who you do it with
and explain why you think doing this is healthy.
We are basically using the bullet points as they stand. However, it is important that you know
these two things:
You do not have to use all the bullets points
You can talk about other things as well
You may find that you have plenty to say using the questions prompts what, where, who and why
in the bullet points. In case you do not have enough ideas, or one or more of the bullet points
does not fit with what you want to say about the topic, we will use the other two question words
as well.
• what
• when
• where
• who
• why
• how
You will find that some cue cards only use a couple of these question words. Where this is the
case, you will be especially glad of this list to help you extend your answer.
                                                Step 2
Next, make some notes using each underlined word as a headline. Do this as quickly as possible,
ideally in 30 seconds.
If you think of something you really want to say that does not fit under these headings, just write
an extra heading - other - and jot it down under this. The key is to stay focussed on the topic.
Sample notes for our cue card:
what
• muay thai
• different types of trainings
• other workout sessions - really tough
when
• every other evening for an hour
where
• Diamond fitness and yoga center
who
• personal trainer - also the manager there
• professional, motivates me to push myself
how
• fresh, challenging
• boxing
• kickboxing
• body conditioning with weights
• strength
• flexibility
why
• out of curiosity, now passionate
• stay fit, healthy
• build a strong, resilient body
• mental well-being
other
• punch bag, let off steam, recharged
                                              Step 3
Spend the remainder of your 1-minute planning time organising your notes.
Do these two things:
1. Decide which note to talk about (you do not have to use them all)
2. Put notes in a logical order
Here are our sample notes organised into a logical order:
1. Muay Thai
2. Train every other evening for an hour
3. Personal trainer - Jackson
4. Diamond fitness and yoga center
5. Not just trainer, also the gym’s manager
6. Variety it offers
7. Different types of trainings - boxing, kickboxing
8. Fresh, challenging week by week
9. Other workout sessions - strength, body conditioning
10. Can be really tough, if not train in a while
11. Feel amazing, completely recharged afterward
12. Complement Muay Thai sessions, balance
13. Working out with a PT - a huge difference
14. Respects my pace, encourages me to give every session my all
15. Help me stay fit, build a strong, resilient body
16. A curiosity, now sth I truly enjoy
17. Continue with it, physical benefits, mental well-being
If you do not have time to write them out again as here, write numbers beside them (1, 2, 3, 4...)
to show the order in which you will talk about them.
This will be enough to organise them in your mind.
                                               Step 4
You are now ready to give your 2-minute talk. Refer to your notes if you need to but it is far
better if you can talk without doing so.
What you must not do is to read out your notes.
Your speech will sound unnatural and will not be fluent. You will also run out of things to say
before the 2 minutes is up as you will forget to develop each point as you are talking.
The process of making notes and organising them as shown above should fix the ideas in your
mind, ready for them to flow when you start speaking. The more you practise, the better you will
get.
Here is the first of our IELTS Speaking samples, created from the notes above. Can you see how
it follows the order of the notes?
Describe something healthy you enjoy doing:
I'm a real fitness fanatic and love trying different ways to stay fit and healthy, but one activity
I’m especially passionate about is Muay Thai. I train every other evening for an hour with my
personal trainer, Jackson, at Diamond fitness and yoga center. Jackson isn’t just my trainer - he’s
also the gym’s manager, and his experience and motivation make each session something to look
forward to.
One of the best things about Muay Thai is the variety it offers. It combines different types of
training including boxing and kickboxing, so no two sessions are ever quite the same. It keeps
things fresh and challenging week by week. I especially enjoy the boxing elements which are
intense and really push me to my limits.
On days when I’m not boxing, I’ll do other workout sessions, like strength or body conditioning
with weights. These can be really tough, especially if I haven’t trained in a while, but I always
feel amazing and completely recharged afterward. It’s a great way to complement the
high-energy Muay Thai sessions with something that balances strength and flexibility.
Working out with a personal trainer makes a huge difference. Jackson is incredibly professional
and always motivates me to push myself. He not only respects my pace but also encourages me
to give every session my all. For me, there’s no point in showing up unless I’m going to get the
most out of it.
There’s no doubt that Muay Thai has helped me stay fit and build a strong, resilient body. What
started out as a curiosity has grown into something I truly enjoy. I can definitely see myself
continuing with it not just for the physical benefits, but also for my mental well-being.
* Would it matter if a few points were out of order in your talk? Of course not. Your notes are
just a guide to help you along. Glance at them if you need to, to keep you on track and to help
you to remember all your ideas. The most important thing is to talk naturally as if you were
explaining things to a friend.
The Question prompt method ensures that you quickly and easily come up with thoughts and
ideas for your talk. The six prompt words are also simple to remember.
Part 2: Brainstorming
Being able to quickly and effectively plan your 2-minute talk in the 60 seconds allowed for this
is crucial to developing a presentation that will show off the best of your language skills.
Remember that what you talk about is not important, as long as you stick to the topic, but how
you say it is. However, if you are fumbling around for what to say, your fluency and coherence
will be poor and you will be more likely to make simple errors because of the pressure you are
under.
By having a good planning strategy prepared and practised, you will be ready to create a great
talk that will demonstrate the full extent of your speaking ability.
Example Cue card:
Describe a place near water you have visited.
You should say:
• where this place is
• what you did at this place
• who you went there with and explain why you liked this place.
Sometimes you will find that the bullet points do not relate well to your experience of the topic
or they are not what you want to say about it.
Brainstorming is a particularly useful planning strategy to use in this situation, and it works well
with any topic.
                                        Answering strategy
1. Read the topic sentence and bullet points.
2. Spend about 30 seconds jotting down the first things that come into your head. Single words
or phrases are fine.
Decide which note to talk about (you do not have to use them all).
4. Put notes in a logical order.
                                                 Step 1
First, read the topic sentence and bullet points. Then spend about 30 seconds jotting down the
first things that come into your head. single words or phrases are fine.
You will be given some paper to make your notes and will be able to refer to them during your
2-minute talk if you need to. You will not be marked on what you write down.

                                             Step 2
Spend the remainder of your 1-minute planning time organising your notes.
Do these two things:
1. Decide which note to talk about (you do not have to use them all)
2. Put notes in a logical order
Here are our sample notes organised into a logical order:
 • Quynh Vien resort • walk dog
 • a short drive from home • quieter stretches of the beach
 • between mountains and sea • waves gently roll in
 • years ago, untouched • seabirds search for food
 • new life to this area • few people venture
 • a decade ago, a seaside retreat • spotted seagulls
 • cozy villas, stylish cafe • favourite time evening
 • enjoy the beach, • the sun sets
 • feast on seafood • golden trail across the water
 • fishing • unbelievable tranquility
What will happen as you do this reordering is that your mind will be creating the story you are
about to tell. You will explore more about the technique of storytelling when we come onto the
next planning strategy.
You do not have to do this reordering if it would be more valuable for you to spend the time
developing your ideas. It will depend on how your brain works and how organised your thoughts
need to be for your talk to flow naturally.
                                                Step 3
You are now ready to give your 2-minute talk. Try not to rely too much on your notes and refer
to them only if you need a quick reminder of what you want to say.
Here's the complete talk created from the notes above.
Can you see how it follows the order of the notes?
Describe a place near water you have visited:
I'm lucky enough to live by the coast, close to many wonderful places near water but my favorite
one is Quynh Vien resort, which is just a short drive from my home. It sits quietly between the
mountains and the sea, offering breathtaking views and a deep sense of peace. Many years ago,
this area was relatively untouched, but the resort has brought new life to it without taking away
its natural charm.
About a decade ago, Quynh Vien was established as a seaside retreat with cozy villas and a
stylish café that is now popular with both locals and visitors. Many people come to enjoy the
beach, feast on fresh seafood, or stroll along the shoreline. Others come to fish along the rocky
coast, and it’s common to see people casting their lines, whatever the weather.
However, those things aren't what bring me back again and again. I go to walk my dog along the
quieter stretches of the beach, where the waves gently roll in and seabirds search for food. It’s
peaceful there because few people venture that way, and honestly I’m glad they don’t. I’ve even
spotted exotic birds like seagulls feeding near the shore.
My favourite time to be there is in the evening when the sun sets over the sea, spreading a golden
trail across the water. It feels like a secret world of calm and beauty. The tranquillity is
unbelievable.
* It would not have mattered if the candidate had gone off track from their notes a bit, saying
things in a slightly different order or adding something extra that they suddenly remembered that
was appropriate to include. Your notes are just there to guide you. The greatest value is in the
process of making them.
By using the Brainstorming method of planning, you are never left panicking that you do not
know enough about the topic to talk about it for 2 minutes.
It activates your brain and gets you straight down to making notes. Once you have organised
your ideas, you are ready to go.
Part 2: Using the Senses
There are several types of cue card topic this strategy can work well for:
    ● When describing a place
    ● When describing an experience
When describing a before and after situation where something has changed
Here is the cue card we are going to use to create this third IELTS Speaking test sample:
Example Cue card:
Describe a food you used to dislike but now enjoy.
You should say:
• what it is
• what you disliked about it
• how long you disliked it for
and explain what changed so that you now enjoy it.
                                         Answering strategy
1. Pick out the key words from the bullet points.
2. Write down a list of the five senses on a piece of paper
3. Keeping the 5 senses words in mind, spend about 30 seconds jotting down all the ideas you
can come up with related to the topic.
Single words or phrases are fine.
4. Put notes in a logical order.
5. Use your notes to create a story to tell the examiner about your topic.
6. Give your 2-minute talk refer to your notes if you need to.
                                               Step 1
First, pick out the key words from the bullet points Then write down a list of the five senses on a
piece of paper. Here they are to remind you:
Sight
Smell
Touch
Taste
Hearing
You will be given some paper to make your notes and will be able to refer to them during your
2-minute talk if you need to. You will not be marked on what you write down.
                                                  Step 2
Next, keeping the 5 senses words in mind, spend about 30 seconds jotting down all the ideas you
can come up with related to the topic. single words or phrases are fine. Do this as quickly as
possible, ideally in 30 seconds.
Depending on the specific topic, there might not be something appropriate to write for all senses.
Just concentrate on the ones that are relevant.
Here are some sample notes for this cue card:
durians
summer time
try a little nibble each summer
might grow on me but always disappointed
pale yellow, slimy
strong, musty, overpowering smell
strange texture
family holiday to Ben Tre
a durian vendor
hesitated but gave it a try
amazing taste
rich, sweet, creamy
                                                  Step 3
Now use your notes to create a story to tell the examiner about your topic.
How is a story structured? With a beginning, a middle and an end.
Beginning: an introduction to the subject of your story
Middle: the main event - what happened
End: a conclusion to neatly round off your story
You should just have time left in your 1-minute preparation to quickly reorganise your notes to
put your ideas into a more logical order so that your story flows. You are now ready to give your
talk.
                                                  Step 4
You are now ready to give your 2-minute talk. Having made good use of your planning time,
you'll have all the ideas in your head ready to talk about and your notes to glance at if you need a
reminder. Try not to rely too much on your notes or your fluency will suffer.
Here is our third IELTS Speaking test sample, created from the notes above. Can you see how it
follows the order of the notes?
Describe a food you used to dislike but now enjoy:
I have to say that I’m a real foodie and always keen to try new types, especially traditional food
in other regions or countries. However, I can think of one thing that I couldn’t stand but now
absolutely love. It's something that always used to appear during summer when I was a child -
durians.
They came in a rectangular-shaped box, all squashed together. They looked horrible, pale yellow
and slimy, and the smell was even worse: strong, musty and overpowering. I bit into the creamy
flesh and hit a large seed in the middle with this odd bitter taste that didn’t make it any more
appealing. They tasted just as bad as they looked and had a really strange texture, which was part
of the problem. Each summer, I'd try a little nibble, hoping it would grow on me, but I was
always disappointed.
Then, many years later I went on holiday to Ben Tre with my family. We explored the local area,
and one afternoon, we stopped at a durian vendor. He said they were freshly picked and
encouraged us to try one before buying. I hesitated but saw everyone else enjoying theirs so I
decided to give it a try too.
I took a bite and an amazing taste filled my mouth. It was rich, sweet, and creamy—like custard
with a hint of almond. I must have had a look of total surprise and delight on my face because
suddenly everyone was looking at me and started laughing. Now if anyone asks me if I like
durians, I say that I adore them, but only fresh ones.
As well as providing a framework for your talk, telling a story will also help you to score well
for Fluency and Coherence. This technique works well with many different types of cue card
topics and can be used alongside the Question prompt and Brainstorming planning methods we
have already looked at.
Part 2: How to Begin Your Talk
For many people, the hardest section of the lELTS Speaking exam is Part 2 because you have to
talk continuously for 2 minutes.
Most probably, you rarely do that in your own language, let alone in a foreign language. Do not
worry, it is actually not that difficult. You need just two things:
Knowledge of how to quickly plan your talk
Lots of practise
It does not matter what subject you get in Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking exam as long as you
know how to effectively create an outline for your talk in the 1-minute planning time you are
allowed before you have to start speaking. With this knowledge, you will be able to deliver a
short monologue on any topic.
You should never try to memorise answers for the IELTS Speaking exam. However, it is a good
idea to create and practise a few opening phrases that can be adapted for use with a wide range of
topics.
Use one of these in your first sentence to introduce your talk.
7 Adaptable Phrases
1. the one I'd like to tell you about is...
2. my favourite was...
3. I'd like to talk about...
4. Let me tell you about...
5. Personally, I would have to say...
6. the one who/that stands out is...
7. I'm going to tell you about...
Here are some examples of how to use them in your IELTS Speaking exam:
Example Cue card:
Describe something you do to stay healthy.
I do many things that contribute to a healthy lifestyle but the one I'd like to tell you about is...
Example Cue card:
Describe a TV programme you have watched recently.
I have watched several good TV programmes recently but my favourite was...
Example Cue card:
Describe a day out that you enjoyed.
I'd like to talk about the time I went to...
Example Cue card:
Describe a special friend.
Let me tell you about my friend Kia.
Example Cue card:
Discuss the meaning of happiness for you.
Personally, I would have to say that being happy…
Example Cue card:
Describe the best teacher you have ever had.
I've been lucky enough to have had several really good teachers but the one who stands out is...
Example Cue card:
Describe a photograph you particularly like.
I'm going to tell you about a photograph I took...
Example Cue card:
Describe a place that is special to you.
I'd like to tell you about a field not far from where I live. I've chosen this place because it's where
I love to walk my dog.
Now you have a two - sentence opening and have set yourself up nicely for the main part of your
talk.
Using any of these opening sentences will get you off to a great start with Part 2 of your IELTS
Speaking exam.
However, there are a few simple things that can be done to our opening sentences to increase our
score.
Top tips for extra marks in your IELTS Speaking exam
Let's get one of our topics and opening sentences to work with and improve the Opening
sentence, but any of the examples could be improved in similar ways.
Topic:
Describe a TV programme you have watched recently.
Opening sentence:
I have watched several good TV programmes recently but my favourite was…
There is nothing wrong with this sentence but we can easily make it better.
Many students repeat the words on the cue card, as is done in the example. They are watched
and recently.
In order to get a Band 6 and above, you will need to paraphrase the topic sentence and show that
you are able to use your own language. Like this:
I have seen several good TV programmes in the past few weeks but my favourite was...
We have simply changed a couple of the keywords to show the examiner that we are able to say
something in more than one way. This will gain marks.
You could also name a particular type of TV programme instead of repeating TV programmes.
I have seen several good documentaries / comedies / dramas in the past few weeks but my
favourite was...
There is something else we can do with the vocabulary to impress them even more.
In the original sentence, Good is a very ordinary word and would be better replaced with a
stronger adjective, such as:
I have seen several excellent TV programmes in the past few weeks but my favourite was...
Now let's see what adjectives would work with our different types of TV programmes.
I have seen several thought-provoking documentaries in the past few weeks but my favourite
was...
I have seen several extremely funny comedies in the past few weeks but my favourite was...
Do not forget to use contractions. Instead of I have seen... contract to I've. If you do, you will get
a better score for your pronunciation.
Now let's conclude by looking at the opening sentence we began with and an improved version.
Poor answer: I have watched several good TV programmes recently but my favourite was...
Good answer: I've seen several extremely funny comedies in the past few weeks but my
favourite was...
The second version is a much stronger sentence and would make an excellent opening to a talk
on this topic.
* If you are aiming for a Band 6.5 and above in your IELTS Speaking exam, these are the sorts
of things you need to be able to do with language. The more you practise, the better you will get.
★ Part 3: Key Facts and Common Mistakes
To do well in IELTS Speaking Part 3, it is important to understand 3 things:
• The purpose of Part 3
• What the examiner is looking for
• The key mistakes that lead to a low score
Useful information
• Time: 4-5 minutes
• It is a two-way discussion with the examiner
• You will be asked more questions about your Part 2 topic.
• It gives you the opportunity to show a greater range of speaking skills.
• The examiner's questions will encourage you to express your thoughts, feelings and opinions.
• You will only be assessed on your English language skills, not on the content of what you
actually say.
The questions in IELTS Speaking Part 3 will be more abstract than in Part 1, that is, they will be
about ideas and concepts rather than about you. For example:
Friends
Part 1: What kind of things do you like to do with your friends?
Part 3: Why do you think children can make friends more easily than adults?
Money
Part 1: Would you like to be rich someday?
Part 3: It is said that happiness cannot be bought with money. Do you agree?
Travel
Part 1: What is your favourite type of holiday?
Part 3: Do you think travelling to another country can change the way people think?
Expect some of the questions to be challenging. The purpose of this final part of the Speaking
test is to push you to the limit of your ability. The examiner needs to do this in order to
accurately assess the full extent of your English language skills.
You will not be expected to give a long talk in answer to each question, but your answers will
need to be longer than in Part 1. You can develop them with explanations and examples.
Mistakes to Avoid
• Answers are too short
• Get stressed over difficult questions
• Do not listen carefully to the question
• Do not fully understand the question
Let's take a closer look at each of the mistakes.
1. Answers are too short
Know that you need to give extended answers. Do not try to rush through this last part of the test
because it is challenging and you are dying to get to the end. If you give short answers, the
examiner will just keep asking you more questions until the time is up. It is far better to answer
each one properly and not have to answer so many of them.
2. Get stressed over difficult questions
Accept that you will be getting difficult questions and deal with them appropriately.
3. Do not listen carefully to the question
It is so easy to just hear one or two key words in the question and think you know what is being
asked. Very often you will be wrong. In an exam, that is a serious mistake to make because you
probably will not answer the question appropriately, so listen carefully before answering.
4. Do not fully understand the question
If there is just one keyword in the question that you do not understand, you are not going to be
able to answer the question properly.
What most candidates do not know is that you are allowed to ask one or two questions during
IELTS Speaking Part 3 if you really need to.
There are just three things you can ask:
Can you repeat the question please? (when you want to hear the question again)
Can you explain what you mean?
(when you want the examiner to rephrase the question)
Can you explain what the word means please?
(when you want the examiner to explain a specific word)
* These are the only questions you are allowed to ask and only do so if absolutely necessary. Ask
no more than two questions in total.
Asking the examiner a couple of questions will not affect your score but do keep it to two and do
not ask them anything else.
   ➢ Part 3: Question types
There are 6 common types of questions in IELTS Speaking Part 3. It is very important to
understand what they are. Here is why?
You will know from the type of question the examiner asks, which grammatical structures you
should be using and what they are trying to assess.
You will not get asked every type of question. Most of the examiner's questions will follow-up
on what you said in your previous answer, but they will mix it up so that you get a good variety
of types.
Common types of question for IELTS Speaking Part 3:
   ● Opinion
   ● Hypothetical questions
   ● Compare and contrast
   ● Change
   ● The future
   ● Benefits
    ❖ Opinion
Being asked to give your opinion is one of the most straightforward question forms.
Read the question and answer below. The highlighted words show that Rose is giving his opinion
rather than stating facts.
Example Question:
Do you think people in your country are less healthy than they used to be?
Rose:
Personally, I think that the health of many people is worse than it used to be. This is mainly due
to obesity caused by an unhealthy diet. Being overweight can cause diabetes, heart problems and
many other serious health issues. A high percentage of the population don't take regular exercise
which is another factor that contributes to poor health. There have, of course, been major
improvements in health care in recent years. This means that more illnesses and diseases can
now be cured which has had a positive effect on health in general. However, in my opinion,
many people in my country are less healthy these days because of unhealthy lifestyles.
There are many other phrases you could use to give your opinion, such as:
• In my experience...
• As far as I'm concerned...
• Speaking for myself...
• I'd say that...
• I believe that...
• In my view…
• From my point of view…
• If you ask me...
• I feel sure that...
    ❖ Hypothetical Questions
These are about unreal or imaginary situations. For example:
Example Question:
If tourists stopped visiting your area, what effect would it have on the economy?
To answer a hypothetical question, you will need to use the conditional. The clue is that little
word if.
Read Crystal’s answer to the question. Can you identify the conditional clauses?
Crystal:
If tourists stopped visiting the beautiful beaches where I live, it would have a terrible impact on
our local economy. Tourism is our most important industry and many people run hotels and guest
houses or work in popular restaurants and cafés.
Lots of shops sell beachwear and souvenirs so these would soon go out of business. Also, there
would not be enough other jobs in the area for all the people involved in tourism to find work.
So, I have to say that it would have a disastrous effect on the economy in my area if tourists no
longer came here on holiday.
   ❖ Compare and Contrast
The third type of question common in IELTS Speaking Part 3 is compare and contrast.
For example:
Example Question:
What are the advantages of living in a city compared to living in the countryside?
In this answer, Emma uses three different words or phrases to show that she is comparing two
things.
Emma:
One of the best things about living in a city is the wide range of leisure activities, from sports to
theatres and museums, unlike rural areas where there are few facilities like this. City shops sell
everything you could want whereas there is a limited choice in country markets and many goods
are unavailable.
It's also easier to find work and accommodation in cities and the public transport system is better
so you can get around without any problems. In contrast, people living in the countryside often
have to walk everywhere or get a bicycle as there are few buses and no taxis. The roads are also
bad.
There are many other words and phrases that are appropriate to use for answering this type of
question.
Here are a few of them:
Compare
• in the same way
   - similarly (adverb) in a similar way
   - likewise (adverb) in the same way; also
   - comparatively (adverb) to a moderate degree as compared to something else; relatively
   - compared with (phrase) to examine the differences between two or more things
• contrast
   - on the other hand
   - conversely (adverb) introducing a statement or idea which reverses one that has just been
         made or referred to
   - nevertheless (adverb) in spite of that; notwithstanding; all the same
   - otherwise (adverb) used to state what the result would be if something did not happen or
         if the situation were different
   - whereas (conjunction) used to compare or contrast two facts
   ❖ Change
Questions about change ask you to talk about the past and the present. For example:
Example Question:
How has education changed since your parents were children?
Read Lisa’s answer and notice the tenses she uses.
Lisa:
The biggest difference is that education is now compulsory for all children starting at the age of
six and many stay on into senior school. My father only went to school for ten years as he had to
work in the fields and look after the cattle full-time from the age of eight. My mother finished
school at 17 years old as she was needed at home to help cook, clean and mind her younger
brothers and sisters. Education wasn't considered important for girls back then.
What is taught in schools hasn't changed much but in towns and cities the children use computers
and can learn all about the world via the internet. In small villages, like the one I come from,
there are still very few teaching resources and certainly no computers. So some changes in
education depend on where you live.
   ❖ The Future
You may also get a question asking you to speculate about the future. For example:
Example Question:
Do you think that everyone in the world will have access to clean water in the future?
Such questions are obviously designed to test your ability to use future structures. This is another
type of question asking for an opinion but this time you will need to answer using the future
tense.
Read Emily’s answer and note where she uses the future tense.
Emily:
That's a really difficult question to answer because I believe that we will have the technology to
provide clean water for everyone, wherever they live, but there are other factors to consider that
are less easy to predict.
Cost is the biggest issue as it is mostly poor communities who lack clean water so it will be
necessary for wealthier communities and nations to fund boreholes and other means of providing
decontaminated drinking water.
Warfare is another huge problem in many areas. It destroys resources and livelihoods and keeps
people poor and unable to improve basic facilities such as access to fresh water. Sadly I think this
will always be an issue in one place or another.
    ❖ Benefits
Our sixth and final type of question common in IELTS Speaking Part 3 asks about benefits. It
could be the benefits of a particular situation or the benefits of one thing over another.
For example:
Example Question:
What do you think are the benefits of hobbies?
What type of words does Camille use to give her answer structure?
Camille:
I believe that there are many great benefits to be gained from having a hobby. First, taking up a
leisure activity is an excellent way of making new friends, especially when you move to a new
area, as you meet like-minded people who share your interest.
Second, having an interesting pastime is good for mental health as it can help to relieve stress
and often improves work-life balance.
Finally, many leisure pursuits bring new challenges and the chance to learn new skills, which are
both added benefits.
Camille uses sequence words to structure her answer - first, second, finally. Well structured
answers get high scores and this is a simple but effective way of organising your ideas.
There are many other words that you could use to answer this type of question. Here are a few
common ones:
    - then (adverb) at that time; next in order of time or sequence
    - next (adverb) immediately following in time, order, or importance
    - furthermore (adverb) in addition; besides
    - in addition (phrase) as an extra thing or circumstance; besides
    - also (adverb) in addition; too
    - likewise (adverb) in the same way; also
    - last (adverb) most recently; at the end
    ❖ Using Examples
Where appropriate, give examples in your answers. It can be an easy way to develop IELTS
Speaking Part 3 answers. You can do this for many different types of questions.
Giving an illustration can also be a simple way of introducing a different tense into your answer,
as it could be something that happened in the past, is a current situation, or something that will
happen in the future, although you will not have time to go into much detail.
Read Julie’s answer to the following question, to see how she builds her answer around the
example.
Example Question:
How do you think children can be encouraged to read more?
Julie:
“Giving children easy access to exciting books in their schools and in local libraries is perhaps
the most obvious thing to do. However, I believe that the best way to motivate them to read more
is to organize book fairs at schools, where kids can read and discuss books together.
This is what turned my nephew into an eager reader. A Book Week event was recently held at his
school and he read fun stories with his classmates.
My nephew talked about it for days and is now reading more books and is even writing his own
stories. I know from talking to his parents that the book fair encouraged other children in the
school to read more as well. I think more schools should do this.”
The most challenging aspect of IELTS Speaking Part 3 is the abstract nature of the questions.
Even if you have had the opportunity to talk extensively with native English speakers or
high-level learners, you are most likely to have chatted about yourself, and your interests and
experiences. You almost certainly will not have spent much, if any, time discussing abstract
ideas.
You need to prepare yourself by practising. This will get you used to developing these types of
answers quickly and effectively.
