Air Traffic Accidents: Name:Yashvi Makarh Class:9C Subject:Social Studies

Air traffic involves the management of aircraft movement to ensure safety and efficiency, with human error, weather conditions, and technical failures being major causes of incidents. Notable accidents include the Boeing 75 crash in Australia and the Mirage 2000 crash in India, both highlighting the importance of air traffic control. Additionally, terrorism and war-related events have led to significant changes in aviation security and operations, exemplified by incidents like the Tenerife Disaster and the 9/11 attacks.

Air Traffic

Accidents
Name:Yashvi Makarh Class:9C Subject:Social Studies
INTRODUCTION

Air traffic refers to the movement of aircraft through the skies and around
airports, managed by a network of highly trained professionals and
advanced systems. Every day, thousands of planes travel across the globe,
carrying passengers and cargo safely from one place to another. To avoid
collisions and ensure smooth operations, air traffic controllers guide planes
during takeoff, flight, and landing. Managing air traffic is a complex task,
requiring precision, communication, and constant monitoring of aircraft
positions, weather, and air routes. As the number of flights increases, so
does the need for safe and efficient air traffic control systems.
Major causes

Air traffic incidents can occur for many reasons. They often involve a mix of
human, technical, and environmental factors. The most common cause is
human error, which includes mistakes by pilots or air traffic controllers, such
as miscommunication or misjudgment. Bad weather, like heavy fog, storms,
or strong winds, can reduce visibility and impact flight safety. Technical
failures, such as engine malfunctions or faulty instruments, can also create
dangerous situations. Congested airspace, especially near busy airports,
raises the chances of near misses and other conflicts. Understanding these
causes is key to improving safety and preventing future incidents.
Some incidents
would be
BOEING 75 CRASH

-Aircraft: Boeing Stearman Model 75 (vintage

1941 biplane)
-Location: Shellharbour Airport, NSW, Australia
-Date: 10 March 2024
-What occurred: Flipped forward mid-runway
during landing
-Casualties: Two on board, minor injuries only
-Cause: Likely over-braking on a tailwheel aircraft
-Aftermath: Fuel spill (~70 L), emergency services
responded, ATSB investigation underway
MIRAGE 2000 CRASH

-Aircraft: Mirage 2000 (Twin-seat fighter jet)

-Location: Near Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, India
-Date: 6 February 2025
-What occurred: Crashed during training due to
technical failure
-Casualties: None; both pilots ejected safely
-Cause: Suspected technical malfunction
-Aftermath: Aircraft destroyed; IAF inquiry underway
Terrorism & War-Related Air Traffic
Cause sudden airspace closures, flight diversions, and increased ATC pressure.
Lead to confusion, delays, and sometimes tragic accidents.
Often result in permanent changes to aviation security and operations.
✈ Famous Examples

Tenerife Disaster (1977)

– Bomb threat at Gran Canaria (linked to terrorism) caused mass diversion to Tenerife.
– Overcrowded airport + fog + miscommunication → Runway collision, 583 dead.

Malaysia Airlines MH17 (2014)

– Civilian jet shot down over war zone (Ukraine).
– All 298 onboard killed.
– Sparked global bans on flying over conflict zones.

9/11 Terrorist Attacks (2001)

– 4 hijacked planes used as weapons.
– Over 3,000 lives lost, entire US airspace shut down.
– Led to stricter cockpit rules, screenings, and ATC alerts
