What is handwriting?
Handwriting is the art of presenting written information using a
hand. It is a tactile skill that involves the use of symbols of a
language to covey message. The symbols used include, letters,
numbers and punctuation marks.
Importance of good handwriting to;
(a) The school
It is a marketing strategy of the school to achieve a good
population of learners.
It creates a brand name for the school.
(b) The learner
It creates a sense of responsibility among learners.
It motivates the teacher to mark the work of a learner with
love.
It contributes to a good performance.
(c) The parent
Good handwriting produced by children is a sign of value for
money on the side of parents.
Parents get interested in guiding their children because of
good handwriting.
It creates love to the school of their children.
(d) The teacher
Well written work motivates the teacher to mark learners’
learners’ books.
It eases assessment of learners.
It creates a good teacher- pupil relationship which results into
good performance in the subject.
What are the pre-writing skills of producing a good
handwriting
Sitting posture: Encourage the learners to sit upright if they
are to produce well written work in their books.
Positioning of the book. Let the children place their books
properly on their desks. Discourage them from tilting the
books.
Holding of a writing tool. Learners should hold the pens
properly if they are to write well shaped letters. Their wrist
joint should be flexible.

What promotes the culture of handwriting in a school
Team work
You should cooperate as staff in order to achieve a good
handwriting among learners. Speak the same language.
Supervision
The school administrators at different levels should supervise
the teachers to ensure they do the right thing.
Capacity building, such as holding of seminars on
handwriting and organization of work.
Motivation of learners: Motivate the children using diverse
mechanisms, such as applauding those that have shown
improvement, giving of some pet gifts etc.
Be a role model: Teachers should illustrate to the learners on
how they should write. This should be done both in books and
examination scripts.
Be strict: You must be strict in your respective subjects such
that learners adopt consistence in handwriting. However,
restrain from harassing children as it leads to other negative
side effects.
