UNIT 1-SPORTS FOR FITNESS

MODULE 1: UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Filipinos are known for their love for sports. According to Newsbytes ph (Calimag,
2019), Filipinos are the world's top of sports fans who use social media to watch their
favorite sports competitions. Some even take time to go to local basketball or volleyball
leagues to participate in different sports events or support these friends or relatives who
are participating in the games.

Just like aerobic and muscle and bone strengthening activities, different sports and games
not only contribute to enhancing health-related fitness, but can also hone one's potential
in participating in high performance sports.

Different games played during your elementary days:


Batuhang-bola, kickball, and agawan base are some of the activities in the elementary
which aim to develop your understanding of movement principles.

It also aims to let you experience physical activities that are fun and exciting so that you
can be motivated in engaging in physical activities.

Note: Participating in physical activities will result in the refinement of movement skills
and enhanced health-related fitness.

TYPES OF GAMES

1. Invasion/Territory - From the word invade, the objective of this game is to


invade/attack the opponent's territory/goal to acquire points.
Examples: Patintero, Agawan Base, Soccer, Basketball, Football, Rugby, and Hockey.

2. Net and Wall - In this game, teams score a point by sending the ball over the net
toward the opponent's court.
Examples: Sepak Takraw, Tennis, Volleyball, Squash, and Badminton.

3. Striking and Fielding - A player scores by striking a ball/object and attempting to run
in designated bases in the playing area (field) before the opposing team stops the play.
Examples: Kickball, Baseball, Softball, and Cricket.

4. Target - The objective of target games is to hit the target area with the given object.
Examples: Tatsing, Syato, Bati Cobra, Tumbang-Preso, Tamaang-Tao, Golf, Archery,
Bowling, and Billiards.

5. Fundamental Movement Skills Games - These games are designed to help develop
basic movement patterns (locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative) and enhance
physical literacy.
Examples: Piko, Luksong Tinik, Luksong Baka, Foot Race, Relay Race.

6. Chasing or Fleeing - These are commonly known as "tag games." The chaser aims to
tag another player, while the fleer aims to avoid being tagged.
Examples: Langit-Lupa, Tag, Ice-Water, Flag Tag, Whiz Tag, Agawan Panyo.

SPORTS FOR FITNESS

A sport is a structured physical activity that uses different movement patterns and skills
to achieve a specific goal. Sports enthusiasts play sports not just for competition and
winning but also as:
- Recreation
- Self-enjoyment
- Attaining excellence
- Way for skills development
- A combination of the above

Sports can be classified as:


1. Individual Sports - Played by two opposing individuals.
2. Dual Sports - Played by two players working together to win.
3. Team Sports - Opposing groups composed of three or more members compete.
4. Combat Sports - Usually involve one-on-one combat or demonstration of martial arts
forms.

PARTICIPATION IN INDIVIDUAL SPORTS FOR FITNESS

Competence in Fundamental Movement Skills is a good foundation for more advanced


sports skills.

Movement Skills

Locomotor- Movement skills that bring a performer from one place to another.
Examples: Galloping, Running, Jogging, Sliding, Skipping, Leaping, Jumping, Landing.

Non-Locomotor - Movement skills that are done in place.


Examples: Balancing, Weight Transfer, Curling, Bending, Squatting, Stretching,
Twisting.

Manipulative- Movement skills that involve manipulating an object.


Examples: Throwing, Catching, Dribbling, Kicking, Striking.
