DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1.. General
The Ice Protection Panel controls the operation of the engine and propeller
anti-icing, airfoil de-icing, pitot probe heating, angle of attack vane
heating and windshield anti-icing systems. The basic assembly is described
in paragraphs 1 thru 4. The assembly variants are given in paragraph 5.
2. Physical Description (Refer to Figure 1 and IPL Figure 1)
The basic assembly, consists of a cover, a lighting plate and a panel
assembly. The panel assembly comprises a front and a rear plate separated by
spacers. The lighting plate is attached to the front plate. The front plate
houses nine illuminated push-button switches, two indicators, one selector
switch, one toggle switch, and one connector which applies power to the
lighting plate. Diodes are mounted on brackets which are attached to the rear
plate. Electrical connections to the unit are made through two connectors
which are mounted on the rear plate.
The unit power requirements are:
- 28 Vdc
- 115 Vac, 400 Hz
The unit dimensions are:
- Height 179 mm (7,0 inches)
- Width 125 mm (4,9 inches)
- Length 159 mm (6,3 inches)
3. Functional Description (Refer to Schematic Diagram in page-block 101)
The ENGINE ANTI-ICING (LH) switch S0184A is an alternate two-position lighted

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

K General
This page-block gives the test and fault isolation procedures for the unit.
The test procedures make it possible to find a fault at component level. Before
you send the unit back to service after repair or disassembly, you must do the
test procedures which are given below. The test procedures for the standard
assembly are given in paragraph 3. The test procedures for the assembly
variants are given in paragraph 5.
Make sure that you use the test procedure which is applicable to your assembly.
Each procedure does a test on one function of the unit. If you do not get the
normal test result, refer to the probable fault column which is given to help
you find the fault.
2. Test Equipment
The test equipment is given in page-block 901.
3. Test and Fault Isolation Procedures
Before you start any test procedure, clean the unit (for details, refer to
page-block 401) and examine the unit for physical damage (for details, refer
to page-block 501).
If a test gives a positive polarity sign (+), there is a diode in the circuit.
For forward resistance measurements, the (+) sign shows which test connection
is connected to the diode anode. For reverse resistance measurements, the (+)
sign shows which test connection is connected to the diode cathode.
A. Preliminary Checks
Before you start the test procedures:
- Set the Lighted Push-button Switches S0307A, S0398A, S0404A, S0432A,
S4730A and S4731A to the pushed-in position
- Set the Rotary Switch S0258A to the OFF position.

CLEANING
1. General
This page-block gives general procedures for cleaning.
2. Cleaning Agents and Materials
The cleaning agents and materials are given in page-block 901.
3. Cleaning Procedures
WARNING: WEAR GOGGLES WHEN YOU USE AN AIR-JET. WARN OTHER PERSONS TO STAY
AWAY FROM THE AREA. THE AIR-JET PRESSURE MUST NOT BE GREATER THAN
193 kPa (28 PSI).
A. External Cleaning
Use a water dampened lint-free cloth (CML-Fk05-044) and a soft bristle brush
to clean all metal parts, the lighting plate and the legends of the lighted
push-button switches. Use an air-jet with an ionization nozzle to clean
places which are not accessible to a cloth or brush. Pay particular
attention to dirt which may be trapped between the contacts of the
connectors.
B. Internal Cleaning
(1) Remove the lighting plate and cover assembly. For details, refer to
page-block 301. Use a lint-free cloth (CML-Fk05-044) and a soft
bristle brush to clean all metal parts. Pay particular attention to
dirt which may be trapped inside the cover assembly and between the
terminals of the switches and the lighting plate connector.
(2) Use a lint free cloth (CML-Fk05-044) to clean away dust and dirt from
around the electrical parts. To clean areas which are not accessible,
use a soft bristle brush or an air-jet with an ionization nozzle.
C. Cleaning after Soldering / Unsoldering
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, BECAUSE IT IS POISONOUS
AND HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.
- WEAR GOGGLES AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
- DO NOT BREATHE THE VAPORS
- WORK IN AN AREA WHICH HAS A GOOD FLOW OF AIR.
IF YOU GET ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL IN YOUR EYES OR ON YOUR SKIN:
- FLUSH YOUR EYES OR SKIN WITH WATER FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES
- GET MEDICAL HELP.
IF, BY ACCIDENT, YOU INGEST ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL:
- DO NOT VOMIT
- GET MEDICAL HELP.
CAUTION; REMOVE THE REMAINING FLUX IN LESS THAN 1 HOUR AFTER THE SOLDERING
OPERATION.
(1) Clean (un-)soldered connections with a bristle brush and isopropyl
alcohol (CML-Fkll-013) to remove the remaining flux.
(2) Use an air-jet with an ionization nozzle to dry the cleaned area.

ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST

1-. Introduction
A. Purpose
The purpose of this illustrated parts list is to provide a means of locating
and identifying component parts of the unit and to facilitate the
provisioning, storing and issuing of replaceable parts, in accordance with
the approved shop maintenance policy.
B. How to Use the IPL
An illustration is provided in which the replaceable items in the unit are
shown. The illustration identifies the parts by means of item numbers and,
in the case of electrical and electronic components, by the use of an
equipment designator. The illustration is followed by a detailed parts list
in which all the parts are listed in item number sequence. From this list
the user can obtain the part number, nomenclature, usage and quantity of
each item. The nomenclature is indented to show the relationship to the
main assembly.
A dash (-) in the figure/item number column, preceding the number, indicates
that the item is not shown on the illustration. Where applicable, vendors
are identified by a code number, preceded by a capital V, following the item
description in the nomenclature column. The code number is as specified in
the current issue of federal supply codes for manufacturers, catalogue
handbooks H4/8. The effectivity codes column gives a letter to each main
assembly in an IPL figure. The same letter then denotes items which can be
used with all non-coded items in the main assembly.
For detailed information concerning FoN numbers refer to standards manual,
substitutes and equivalents list, technical handbook (TH)-16.
Partnumbers which start with the letters NP followed by the CHM ATA-number
and a sequence number are non-procurable parts. These NP numbers are given
for reference only.
An additional list is provided in this page-block. This list, in the form
of an equipment designator index, identifies all electrical and electronic
components listed in the detailed parts list. The equipment designators are
arranged in alphanumeric sequence with each component cross-referenced by
figure/item numbers to the detailed parts list.
