Role of Professional Organizations in the Field of Nursing: Advocacy and Activism
After completing the nursing course, every nurse should register in any of the 100
available professional nursing organizations. While it may be a voluntary decision, it is
indispensable and essential for nurses to become members of their respective professional
organizations due to the many benefits nurses reap in do in so. Professional organizations are
crucial bodies where nurses link up with peers from similar fields to learn from one another and
form more vital voices to influence policy and activism. These organizations support the nursing
field by enhancing peer relationships, increasing nursing knowledge, and providing a platform
where nurses can unite to channel their views.
I have benefited greatly as a professional nursing organization member of the American
Nurses Association (ANA). For instance, I have not only had the opportunity to connect with
peers but also experienced protection of my rights as a practicing nurse. Besides, professional
nursing organizations provide us, nurses with an opportunity to progress our education and
advocate for our rights and that of patients.
Our patients are at the center of healthcare delivery. Therefore, championing their rights
through pushing for relevant policies and legislation is one of the crucial roles of professional

nursing organizations. For instance, one of ANA’s missions is to improve healthcare delivery
standards, which enables the organization to act as a political and legal advocate for nurses to
improve quality care for the benefit of patients and nurses alike. Also, when nurses face
challenges in their workplace, the professional organizations’ activism becomes a collective
voice promoting nurses’ welfare in their work environment. Depending on the scope and
jurisdiction of the professional organization, patient care will improve according to the local,
national or international health and patient care standards.
