Lesson Outline:
1. Introduction (5 mins)
Begin with a simple question:
👉 “Where do babies come from?”
Use this to lead into the topic: "Today we will learn about pregnancy – how life begins,
and what changes happen during that time."
2. What is Pregnancy? (10 mins)
Definition:
Pregnancy is the period when a baby grows inside a woman’s womb after fertilization of an egg
by a sperm.
Key Facts:
It lasts about 9 months (40 weeks).
During this time, the baby grows and develops.
A pregnant woman is called an expectant mother.
Visual Aid: Show a chart of a baby developing in the womb over the months.
3. Features of Pregnancy (10 mins)
Main Features:
Physical changes in the mother (e.g., growing belly, weight gain).
Hormonal changes that prepare the body for childbirth.
Growth of the baby from an embryo to a fetus to a full-term baby.
Discussion Question:
“Why do you think it’s important for pregnant women to eat well and see a doctor?”
4. Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy (10 mins)
Common Signs:
Missed menstrual period
Morning sickness (nausea)
Tiredness
Frequent urination
Breast tenderness
Note: These signs can vary from woman to woman.
5. Teenage Pregnancy – Health and Social Consequences (15
mins)
Definition:
Teenage pregnancy is when a girl under the age of 20 becomes pregnant.
Health Consequences:
Teenage girls' bodies may not be fully developed for childbirth.
Higher risk of complications during birth.
Poor nutrition and lack of prenatal care.
Social Consequences:
Dropping out of school.
Financial hardship.
Social stigma and emotional stress.
Difficulty taking care of a child at a young age.
Discussion Activity:
“What are some ways teenagers can protect their future and avoid early pregnancy?”
(Encourage answers like focusing on school, saying no to peer pressure, talking to trusted
adults.)
