Instrumentation
Apparatus Uses
1. Beaker A beaker is a cylindrical glass or plastic vessel used for
holding liquids. It is a multi- purpose piece of
equipment used for containing a chemical reaction,
measuring liquids, heating them over a Bunsen
burner's flame or collecting them in a titration
                 experiment.
2. Flask Flasks are useful types of chemistry glassware for
containing liquid and performing mixing, heating,
                 cooling, precipitation, condensation, and other
processes. These flasks –also known as a science flask,
chemistry flask, or a laboratory flask (lab flask)– come
in a range of sizes, materials, and uses.
3. Tongs Laboratory tongs are large pincers for grasping and
lifting vessels of heat-resistant material used in high
temperature chemical reactions. Tongs differ in shape
are designed to pick up laboratory items including, hot
evaporating dishes, beakers, crucibles, and other
                 laboratory apparatuses.
4. China dish China dish (or evaporating dish) is a glazed porcelain
dish available in various sizes. They are thick and are
good insulators and can withstand high temperatures.
It mainly used for boiling, evaporating solutions and
crystallization of salts in chemistry laboratory.
5. Watch glass A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used
in chemistry as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold
solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount
of substance and as a cover for a beaker.
6. Funnel A funnel is a tube or pipe that is wide at the top and
narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid or powder
                 into a small opening.
Funnels are usually made of stainlesssteel
, aluminium, glass, or plastic. The material used in its
construction should be sturdy enough to withstand the
weight of the substance being transferred, and it
should not react with the substance. For this reason,
stainless steel or glass are useful
7. Wire Gauge Wire gauze is an important piece of supporting
equipment in a laboratory as glassware cannot be
heated directly with the flame of a Bunsen burner, and
requires the use of a wire gauze to diffuse the heat,
helping to protect the glassware. Glassware has to be
flat-bottomed to stay on the wire gauze.
8. Tripod stand A laboratory tripod is a three-legged platform used to
support flasks and beakers. Tripods are usually made
of stainless steel or Aluminium and lightly built for
portability within the lab. Often a wire gauze is placed
on top of the tripod to provide a flat base for glassware.
9. Filter paper Filter paper is a semi-permeable paper barrier placed
perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is used to
separate fine solid particles from liquids or gases
10. Dropper Dropperis a device used to transfer small quantities of
liquids. They are used in the laboratory and also to
dispense small amounts of liquid medicines.
11. Test tubes Test tubes are widely used by chemists to handle
chemicals, especially for qualitative experiments and
assays. Their spherical bottom and vertical sides
reduce mass loss when pouring, make them easier to
wash out, and allow convenient monitoring of the
                      contents.
12. Pipette A pipette is a laboratory instrument used to measure
out or transfer small quantities of liquid, in volumes of
                      millilitres (mL), microliters (μL).
13. Burette A burette is used to dispense small volumes of liquid
called aliquots, or sometimes gas, with high accuracy.
It consists of a long glass tube with a valve at one end
to control the flow of liquid. Burettes serve essentially
the same purpose as a pipette.
