LAB-07

Definition: According to Atlassian, Jira is used for issue


tracking and project management. Some of the organizations
that have used Jira at some point in time for bug-tracking and
project management include Fedora Commons, Hibernate and
the Apache Software Foundation, which uses both Jira and
Bugzilla.

Aim: Perform activity to manage project using Jira tool for


scrum framework.

Perform below given points:


1: Creation of epic, user story, sprint start, sprint completion ,
showing burndown chart.
2: Create automation rule regarding bug issue.

Required Tool: Jira Software

Outcomes/Learning:
Epic: An epic is a large body of work that can be broken down
into a number of smaller stories, or sometimes called “Issues”
in Jira.
Story: A story in Jira is represented as an issue of type Story. It
tells a story about a customer or user employing the product. A
story has a name, a brief narrative, and acceptance criteria,
conditions that must be met for the story to be completed.
Sprint: A sprint is a fixed time period where a team commits to
a set number of issues from their backlog. Sprints are usually
one, two, or four weeks long. At the end of the sprint, a team
will typically have built and implemented a working product increment. In
Jira Software, sprints are planned on the Backlog screen.
Burndown Chart: A burndown chart shows the amount of work that has
been completed in an epic or sprint, and the total work remaining.

Creation of Epic
Once we have created a Project in Jira, we can start to creating issues in
the project. In Jira software, an epic is simply an issue of type Epic.
Steps to create a new epic in Jira software are as follows:
 Log in to Jira software application.
 Click on the Create button.

When we click on the Create button, a new window will open. In


the Create issue new window
Select the Project. Select the project in which you want to create an
Epic.
In the Issue type drop down, choose Epic.

Add other necessary details like Epic Name, Summary, etc. Click on
the Create button to create the Epic.
To close the new Create issue window click on the Cancel link.
Create epic from Backlog screen
We can also create epic from the Backlog screen. Switch to Backlog
screen.
To switch click on the Backlog link in the left navigation.
Toggle to Epic >> Create epic link.

Creation of User Story

To add a story to your backlog:


 Navigate to the ‘Create’ screen in your Jira Scrum or Kanban
project

 Create a new Jira issue and select the appropriate project from the
dropdown menu

 Make sure ‘Story’ is selected as the issue type. This will be the
default setting.

 Your story will then go into the backlog to be assigned and


actioned by the project manager, project leader, product owner or
other relevant stakeholders.
Sprint Start and Sprint Completion

Step 1: Create a sprint

1. Go to the Backlog of your Scrum project.

2. Click the Create Sprint button at the top of the backlog.

Note that you can create more than one sprint.

Step 2: Fill your sprint with stories from the backlog


Once you've created your sprint, you'll need to fill it with issues.

To add stories to your sprints

Navigate to the Backlog.

Drag and drop issues from the Backlog onto your sprint.

Note that you can also add an issue to your sprint by editing the issue
and updating the Sprint field.
Step 3: Start sprint
Once you've added issues to your sprint and the team is ready to work,
you'll need to start the sprint.
To start a sprint
1. Go to the Backlog of your Scrum project.
2. Find the sprint that you want to start and click Start Sprint.

Step 4: Monitor your team's progress


During the sprint, you'll probably want to monitor the team's progress.
One way of doing this is by viewing the Sprint Report.
Step 5: Close the sprint
To close a sprint
1. Navigate to the Active sprints of your Scrum board.
2. If necessary, select the sprint you want to complete from the sprint
drop-down.
Note that if you have multiple sprints in the Active sprints of your
board, the 'Complete Sprint' button will not appear until you select
one of the sprints.
3. Click Complete Sprint. All completed issues will move out of
Active sprints.
Burndown Chart
To view the sprint burndown chart:
1. Navigate to your scrum project.
2. Select the Backlog or Active sprint.
3. Click Reports, then select Burndown Chart.

Automation
Automation empowers you to focus on the work that matters, removing
the need to perform manual, repetitive tasks by allowing your teams to
automate their processes and workflows.
Create automation rule regarding bug issue
1. Navigate to your Automation settings and select Create rule in the
top-right corner.
2. Select the Issue created trigger, and select Save.
3. Select New condition, and select the Issue fields condition.
4. Configure the condition as follows:
Set the Field to Issue Type
Set the Condition to equals
Set the Value to compare to Bug
Select Save.
5. Select New action, and select the Assign issue action.
6. Give your rule a name, and select Turn it on.
