Study and Apply

Here you will find brief pieces of advice that will work on every written piece:

 REMEMBER: all our piece of writings must be in a FORMAL REGISTER

 Make sure that you collect CHUNKS OF LANGUAGE during this entire course.
You won’t have time to come up with new expressions and vocabulary during the exam.

Essay
Here are some tips regarding essays extracted directly from the Cambridge webpage:

We’d written some essays before, so I will test you!

Take 15 minutes to read this essay and write down the mistakes and write how you would modify
it.

Article (page 166 exam book)

The structure of your article would be based on this:

 Ph 1 Introduction Start with a catchy opening line to hook the readers.

 Ph 2 – Describe what makes your surprise special, developing the sequence of events and the context
of the story.

 Ph 3 – Round up your story saying something deeply sentimental about the memory and how it had
an impact in your life.

DON’T FORGET! YOU ARE ALWAYS ALLOWED TO LIE 

Let’s test ourselves! How can you improve this article?

E-mail (page 164 informal / 165 formal exam book)

Lucky us! If the e-mail is an actual option in our exam.

The e-mail has a friendly structure which we’ve practiced since always.

HOWEVER, this just means only that. This is not as simple as we

thin k ; the real challenge is to convert the ‘easy words’ we tend to
use in e-mails into showing we truly k now a wide range of informal
vocabulary.
(Here you can go back to the vocabulary image I showed you before)

Informal E-mail

Formal E-mail

E-mails in this level are pretty similar to writing stories; you have
to get really deep into them! Be the character of the story.
This isn’t like writing essays in which we lie constantly about facts
and use fixed expressions.
Imagination and a smart use of vocabulary are the key point here.

Review

The Review focuses on how well you can des cribe and motivate your opinion about
something you have first-hand knowledge of (the like of an electronic device, a
music album, entertainment, etc.), with a final suggestion to the reader.

In other words, in a review you have to describe, detail and give your opinion.

My Name is Bond, James Bond

Who hasn’t heard of James Bond? The British secret agent must surely be the world’s most famous
movie hero. Not only has this franchise been successful for several decades, James Bond movies are
and have been box office hits all over the world since the 1960s.

Its main character, the charming and clever agent 007 combines sophistication and physical
strength. He is not only intelligent but also a perfect soldier. The movies completely rely on his
character because it is James Bond who adds all the different elements that make these movies so
successful: humour, romance, action and quirky but charming Britishness. Of course there have
been other spy movies, and good ones too, but this is different. James Bond has been delighting
audiences for so many years, it’s simply incomparable.

I would certainly recommend his films to people of all ages. The earlier movies are less action-
oriented and might appeal to a more mature audience while the latest ones would be more popular
with a younger audience. There’s something for everyone. So go and take a look for yourselves:
You won’t regret it.

Try to recall all the pieces of advice we read and talked about in these pages and tell me:

How good is this piece of writing? What can you highlight from it? Is it relevant enough for a B2
exam? Would you add something else?

Report
The main purpose of the report is to inform over a matter that later would take
part in a certain decision. You are asked to give a positive and negative (if
required) descriptions and opinions.

writing a Report:
