This introduction features three prominent figures in the field of science: Carl Linnaeus, a
Swedish botanist known as the "father of modern taxonomy" for his systematic classification
of living organisms; Dr. Alfredo Santos, an early Filipino scientist who made impactful
contributions to biodiversity and environmental conservation; and Dr. Rolando Dela Cruz, a
contemporary Filipino scientist focused on biotechnology and sustainable agriculture.
Carl Linnaeus was a Professor, Scientist and Doctor. He had an impressive career which
still affects the way we work today. Carl Linnaeus, also known as Carl von Linné or Carolus
Linnaeus, is often called the Father of Taxonomy. His system for naming, ranking, and
classifying organisms is still in wide use today (with many changes). His ideas on
classification have influenced generations of biologists during and after his own lifetime,
even those opposed to the philosophical and theological roots of his work.
Linnaeus was both popular and influential as a
professor and scientist. A charismatic teacher, he
surrounded himself with students, the most gifted
of whom he sent on voyages of exploration. His
'apostles', as he called them, crossed the
continents in order to bring back new plants and
animals, which Linnaeus would name according to
his new binomial system of nomenclature.
Carl Linnaeus is most famous for creating a
system of naming plants and animals—a system
we still use today.
This system is known as the binomial system,
whereby each species of plant and animal is given
a genus name followed by a specific name
(species), with both names being in Latin.
Dr. Alfredo Santos is known for his studies in the chemistry of natural harvest. He has
completed a lot of work in the segregation and elucidation of the phaeantharine and other
alkaloids from Philippine medical plants. He was elected as Academician in 1978 and
conferred as National Scientist in 1978.
Dr. Santos served in different capacities at the
University of the Philippines for 45 years until he
stop working in 1965 as Dean of the College of
Pharmacy. After his UP stint, Dr. Santos sustained
to do study at the UST Research Center and the
National Institute of Science and Technology
(NAST).
In appreciation of his innovative experimental
researches in various alkaloids isolated from
Philippine medicinal plants, he acknowledged Pres.
Magsaysay’s Distinguished Service Star in 1954. In
1953, he is also a receiver of the Outstanding
Pharmacist Researcher of the Philippine
Pharmaceutical Association and Phil AAS
Outstanding Scientist Award in 1973.
Dr. Rolando C. Dela Cruz is an award-winning Filipino scientist and inventor. In 2000 he
developed a patented formula that removes moles or warts. Its formula was derived from
the Cashew tree (Annacardium occidentale) extracted in the Philippines, where it is
known as “kasoy”. In the Philippines, Dr. Dela Cruz performed treatments directly in
shopping malls. The product has already been tested for more than 20 years and has been
successfully used millions of times.
The formula won numerous awards, including a
gold medal in September 2000 at the international
fair for innovation, industrial design and technology
in Kuala Lumpur.
Dr. Rolando C. Dela Cruz is also the recipient of
the “Tuklas Award” for the most outstanding
invention in 1998 from the Department of Science
and Technology.
Besides DeBCC, De la Cruz’s magic touch was
acknowledged for his Amazing Touch product,
which offers natural, non-surgical removal of warts,
moles and other skin growths using cashew nut
extracts. RCC Amazing Touch International Inc.
was established in March 1997 as a one-stop shop
for skin and hair care treatment.
