the questions from 13 to 20.
Rachel Carson, an ecologist, biologist, and writer, was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. As a
small girl, she was an avid reader and soon showed a keen interest in the natural world and writing. She
had her first story about animals published in a magazine when she was in the fourth grade. She
graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) in 1929, studied at the
Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and received her MA in zoology from Johns Hopkins
University in 1932.
Initially, Rachel Carson worked for the US Bureau of Fisheries as a part-time science writer. Part of her
job was to interest the public in marine and freshwater biology via radio programmes. She then spent
the next few years serving as a marine scientist and editor for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. There,
she became famous for her writings on environmental pollution and the natural history of the sea, in
which she always concerned herself about the impact that humans made on the natural world. Climate
change, rising sea levels, melting Arctic glaciers, and decreasing animal populations are part of
her work.
In her most influential book, Silent Spring (1962), Rachel Carson strongly disapproved of the
widespread use of pesticides such as DDT. She warned the public about its negative long-term effects and
called for new policies to protect humans and the environment. She then was criticized by the chemical
industry and some government officials but never gave up. The book eventually prompted a change in
national policy, leading to the enactment of a national ban on pesticides in agricultural farming.
Additionally, it helped spark the environmental movement, resulting in the establishment of the United
States Environmental Protection Agency. That's why she was called the mother of modern ecology.
Rachel Carson died of breast cancer in 1964. However, her work continues to inspire new generations to
protect the living world.

Rescuing Relics
Have you ever wondered where museums get the works and relics that they put on display? If the
museum is sponsored by the government, then the relics were probably collected under special laws
that protect historical treasures related to that country. However, not all museums are sponsored by the
government. Sometimes a private collector decides to set up a museum so that the public can view the
works or relics in his or her collection. Since the 1990s, more and more of these museums set up by
private collectors have sprung up in China. Typically, these private museums are small, but they
give visitors the chance to see works and relics not found anywhere else.
Songtang Li is one such collector who has put part of his private collection on display for the public. In
2001, Li opened his museum in an old 18th-century house in Beijing. The museum displays some of the
best examples of Chinese folk art he has collected over his lifetime. Many of the pieces in the collection
are actually architectural decorations from old houses and buildings around China’s capital. Whenever
an old building was being torn down, Li would visit the site to see if there was anything from the building
worth rescuing. In this way, Li managed to accumulate thousands of folk art pieces, some of which are
over 1,000 years old.
[I]. The first pieces in his collection were two gate piers that stood in front of his house. [II]. The stone
piers were carved with historical designs, and Li thought of them as his two friends. During his
childhood, he would sometimes even sit beside them and tell them stories. [III]. When Li was seven, the
city told Li’s family to get rid of the piers so that the street could be rebuilt. Rather than throwing them
away, Li’s father allowed his son to keep them. [IV].

10
Thus began Li’s lifetime hobby of visiting demolition sites and collecting pieces of sculpture or
decorative architecture. Anything that he was allowed to take away would end up in his collection. In
the late 1970s, China underwent major economic reforms. At that time, Beijing started widespread
demolition and rebuilding across the city. According to Li, more than ninety percent of the old houses
and temples in Beijing have since been torn down and replaced with modern buildings.
Luckily, all of old Beijing’s architectural folk art has not been lost. Visitors to the Songtangzhai Folk
Sculpture Museum can view some of the best relics Li rescued over the years.

always try to enrich their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world. These people can
then reflect on them to derive their own life lessons, which contributes to their emotional maturity. This
aids them significantly in navigating through difficulties, leading to a more fulfilling life.

Read the following passage about conservation and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer
sheet to indicate the option that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 11 to 20.
[I] In what conservationists are calling a watershed moment, the ambitious Greater Mekong Wildlife
Bridge Project has encountered an unexpected stumbling block. [II] Despite an unprecedented $50
million investment, the migrating elephant populations have plummeted by 35% since its inception. [III]
These statistics have sent shockwaves through the conservation community, challenging long-held
assumptions about wildlife corridor effectiveness. [IV]
The concept of wildlife corridors has long held conservationists in thrall. By creating protected pathways
between fragmented habitats, these artificial lifelines were meant to ensure species survival. Yet
beneath this seemingly foolproof approach lurks a more complex reality. As human settlements
encroach on these corridors, animals find themselves playing Russian roulette with each crossing,
facing lethal risks from poachers who have caught wind of these predictable migration routes.

23
Recent findings from the Southeast Asian Conservation Institute paint a particularly sobering picture.
When faced with human disturbance, elephants altered their migration patterns, venturing into
unprotected areas. These behavioral adaptations proved catastrophic – poaching incidents soared by
180% in these zones. The findings have left conservationists wringing their hands over the unintended
consequences of their well-intentioned interventions.
The economic implications of corridor conservation add another layer of complexity to an already
thorny issue. Local communities, caught between a rock and a hard place, often view these projects with
skepticism. Traditional farming practices fall by the wayside as authorities implement strict land-use
regulations. While compensation schemes exist on paper, they rarely translate into adequate financial
support for affected communities.
Conservation biologists have begun advocating for a paradigm shift in approach. Rather than imposing
artificial corridors, they propose integrating wildlife passages into existing human
infrastructure. This strategy has already borne fruit in countries like Malaysia, where elevated
highways incorporate natural underpasses. These structures allow for wildlife movement while
maintaining human activity above, creating a win-win situation for all stakeholders.
Yet the jury is still out on the long-term viability of such solutions. Critics argue that these modified
corridors merely paper over the cracks of a deeper issue – humanity's relentless expansion into natural
habitats. As urban sprawl continues unabated, even these innovative approaches may prove to be
nothing more than a band-aid on a gaping wound.

When is the best time to drink green tea?
The question of tea in the evening is often debated. We must not forget that tea contains theine, a
powerful stimulant, equivalent to caffeine. Sensitive people should therefore refrain from drinking it

28
after 4 pm, at the risk of seeing their sleep disturbed. Remember that green tea contains less theine
than black tea, so it is more suitable if you want to drink it in the evening. It is also a real aid to digestion.
For many people, tea is the morning ritual. Many people like to drink green tea in the morning on an
empty stomach. Is this practice really beneficial? By drinking your tea on an empty stomach, you not
only rehydrate your body but also eliminate waste and toxins. In short, you're getting a fresh start for
the day! By starting your morning with a cup of tea, you also delay the feeling of hunger and your desire
to consume sweet foods.
Drinking green tea every day has many positive effects, but be careful not to overdo it either.
Ideally, do not exceed 5 cups per day. Reduce this amount if you also drink coffee. It can be tempting to
drink it throughout the day to stay hydrated, but avoid drinking it with meals. Tea decreases your body's
absorption of iron, an essential nutrient. Instead, drink it before or after. Before your meal (thirty
minutes to one hour), it helps to expand your stomach and thus reduces the feeling of hunger. It acts as
a natural appetite suppressant and is therefore a real asset in the context of a diet. After your meal (thirty
minutes to one hour), green tea helps digestion and eliminates fat.
We are used to drinking a good cup of hot tea to warm up in the middle of winter. The reason is purely
scientific. When you drink hot tea, you trigger sweating and increase your body temperature. Your body
will then self-regulate and lower it. The green tea with mint is an excellent alternative: this plant has the
virtue of being refreshing. If you want to cool down your body, drink it hot, ideally at a temperature of
40 to 45°C.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each question from 11 to 20.
AI in Healthcare is poised to bring about a significant transformation, reshaping how clinicians diagnose,
treat, and manage patient care in the coming years. New AI technology in healthcare stands ready to
improve patient outcomes across a broad spectrum. For instance, AI tools will soon help predict disease
progression by detecting subtle warning signals in patient data and enabling earlier, more effective
interventions. Such advancements promise to improve care quality while also reducing preventable
complications and related costs.
AI’s impact will also extend beyond the walls of hospitals and clinics. Remote patient monitoring will
be enhanced by AI-driven wearable technology, enabling clinicians to track a patient’s well-being
continuously and respond promptly to any worrisome changes. At the same time, precision medicine

35
will become more achievable as AI streamlines the interpretation of genetic and genomic data, speeding
diagnoses and fostering truly personalized treatment plans.
Additionally, AI will assist in the early detection of rare diseases-conditions that often defy quick,
accurate diagnoses. Through advanced pattern recognition and facial analysis, intelligent systems can
pinpoint genetic disorders that clinicians might otherwise miss. Personalized virtual health coaches
powered by AI will further guide patients in making healthier lifestyle choices, supporting preventive
care and improving long-term health outcomes.
[I] These developments were underscored at the 2024 Precision Med TriConference, where Mara
Aspinall of Illumina Ventures spoke with Dr. Eric Topol, an esteemed expert at Scripps Translational
Science Institute. [II] Dr. Topol, a prolific author and leader in digital medicine, emphasized the
inevitability and necessity of adopting AI in healthcare. [III] He cautioned that while this transformation
may be one of the most significant in medical history, it remains in its early stages, and the healthcare
community must proceed with measured optimism until robust, real-world evidence accumulates. [IV]
The promise of AI in healthcare extends into the future, where connected digital ecosystems and
powerful analytics engines will reshape our understanding of health and disease. However, the primary
challenge is not AI’s inherent capability to excel, but rather the integration of these tools into everyday
clinical practice. As providers adapt, roles in medicine may shift to emphasize the uniquely human
talents of empathy, complex reasoning, and nuanced judgment. Those who embrace AI will likely reap
the greatest rewards, as new generations of clinicians and patients alike benefit from improved
outcomes, heightened efficiency, and better overall experiences.
