Foreword
The present instructions are concerned with the situations which, according to the
experience of FLSmidth, are the most likely to occur during manufacture, installa-
tion, operation and maintenance of the equipment. An exhaustive enumeration of
all conceivable situations, which may occur, cannot be provided.
Consequently, if a situation should arise, the occurrence of which is not foreseen in
the instructions, and which the operator is/or feels unable to handle, it is recom-
mended that FLSmidth is contacted without undue delay for advice on appropriate
action.

All references to relevant safety standards are given at the EC declaration of con-
formity if required.
Reference by seller to any international or national standard does not incur an

Definitions and abbreviations


Authorized person A person who is qualified and who, by the responsible man-

1.0 Introduction

1.1 COVERED ELECTRODES FOR MANUAL METAL ARC WELDING


Normally FLS use 3 types of electrodes (coatings) for erection and workshop appli-
cations, i.e. the rutile, acid and basic types.
The various types of coating for welding electrodes affect the electric arc and the
appearance, penetration, fusion rate and quality of the weld.

1.1.1 The rutile type electrode - ISO symbol Rand RR:


1. This coating (usually heavy covering) contains over 50% of titania (TiO2) as the
minerals rutile or ilmenite.
2. Gives good arc stability, low spatter, medium penetration and is ideal for general
engineering.
3. Is suitable for welding in all positions and produces a smooth, convex weld.
4. The mechanical properties are generally sound, although ductility is lower than
with other coatings.
5. Requires only a modest degree of training on the part of welding operator.
6. Operates on direct as well as on alternating current.
7. Is used for welding of all ordinary structures in good weld able parent metal
under dry conditions.

1.1.2 The acid type electrode - ISO symbol A:


1. Has a coating (medium to heavy covering) containing a considerable quantity of
iron oxides, manganese oxides and silicon oxides.
2. Gives a powerful arc, high deposition rates, deep penetration (especially with
thick covering) and low spatter.
3 . Although welds can be made in all positions the nature of the molten slag
(voluminous and often fluid) makes these electrodes best used in the flat position.
4 . Mechanical properties are good.
5. Requires an experienced welding operator.
6. Operates on direct current as well as on alternating current.
7. Is used for long welds in structures of highly weld able materials where contrac-
tion and low strength are acceptable.
8. Weld deposits from these electrodes are more susceptible to hot cracking than
other types and care must be taken with the parent material. Carbon content
should not exceed 0.24%, nor sulphur content exceed 0.05% for killed steels or
0.06% for rimmed steels. Crack susceptibility is most marked in horizontal-vertical
or vertical fillet welds.

1.1.3 The basic type electrode - ISO symbol B:


1. Has a complex coating containing a high proportion of limestone and fluorspar
(CaF,).
2. Ensures very low hydrogen contents in the weld deposit.
3. Dives medium speed of deposition, moderate penetration and good bead
appearance
4. Is suitable for welding in all positions and produces a smooth, fine-ripped sur-
face.

5. Mechanical properties including ductility and notch toughness are superior to


other types.
6. Experienced welding operator.
7. Welds on direct current electrode positive; however, some types can be used for
alternating current.
8. Is less sensitive to plate quality than other types and is used for high carbon or
high sulphur containing steels and for unknown compositions.

1.2 Weldability of unalloyed steel


DEFINITION OF WELDABILITY (DS/EN 45 and 581)
A metallic substance is considered to be weldable when metallic continuity can be
obtained by welding using a suitable procedure, so that the joints comply with the
requirements specified in regard to both their local properties and their influence on
the construction of which they form part.
The composition of the base material is of crucial importance, and for materials the
main determinants are the content of C, Si, Mn, P and S.
In aftermath of experiments several formulas have been introduced to evaluate the
suitability of given steel grade for welding when its composition is known. One aim
of the formulas is to calculate a carbon equivalent CE.
The CE factor as given in the BS 4360 is calculated as:

As a general rule the CE element must never exceed 0.41 % where welding is to be
performed without preheating. An increase in the CE value enhances the risk of
cracks in the base material up to the welded seam because of the hardening in-
volved. To avoid any such hardening, preheating of the material is needed. Further,
the preheating temperature depends on the thickness of the material, the type of
weld, the heat input during welding operation and the "ciimatic conditions" at
workplace.
Impurities in the form of slags (stratification) in the material will increase the risk of
welding flaws.
Steels can be supplied in the killed and unkilled state. Normally Si is used to kill
steel; AI may also be employed. In unkilled steels the Si element is < 0.02%, and
often with pronounced segregation. In killed steels the Si element is > 0.10%, with
a more uniform composition. of a segregation zone which may give rise to welding
flaws.
