Read the following passage and answer the questions given after it.
Throughout the extensive areas of the tropics the tall and stately primeval forest has given way to eroded
land, scrub, and the jumble of secondary growth. Just as the virgin forests of Europe and North America
were laid low by man’s improvidence, so those of the tropics are now vanishing only their destruction may
be encompassed in decades instead of centuries. A few authorities hold that, expect for government
reserves, the earth’s great rain forest may vanish within a generation. The economic loss will be
incalculable, for the primary rain forests are rich sources of timber (mahogany, teak) and such by-products
are resins, gums, cellulose, camphor and rattans. No one, indeed can compute their resources, for the
thousands of species that compose the forest cover, there are only a few whose physical and chemical
properties have been studied with a view to commercial use.
Most important of all, the primeval rain forest is a reservoir of specimens, a dynamic centre of evolution
which the rest of the world’s plant life has been continually enriched with new forms. These extensive
reserves must be defended from the acquisitive hand of man, whose ruthless axe would expose them to
the ravages of sun and rain.
26. According to the passage, the primary reason for conservation of the great rain forests is that they
are
A the chief source of income of governments

B areas of botanical evolution

C major sources of materials for chemical industries

D not ready for man’s ruthless axe

Answer: B

27. The word ‘primeval’ in a paragraph two means

B conservationists and botanists

C chemical manufacturers

D government representatives
Answer: B

29. According to the passage, the result of chopping down the tropical rain forest is

A an increase in government reserves

B a surge in plant evolution

C damage to the soil

D a decrease of commercial exploitation

Answer: C

30. ‘Only their destruction may be encompassed in decades instead of centuries’ means that the
destruction of forests
A will take only a few decades
will happen in this
B
century

C will be surely by the next century

D will take place in a decade

a2 −b2 −c2 −2bc

41. If a = 0.25, b = −0.05 and c = 0.5, the value of 2+b2−2ab−c2 is
a

A 2
14
B 17

C 1
25
D 16

Answer: A

Explanation:
a2 −b2 −c2 −2bc a2 −(b+c)2 (a+b+c)(a−b−c)
We have a2+b2−c2−2ab = (a−b)2 −c2 = (a−b+c)(a−b−c)

Substituting the values of a,b and c we get

(a+b+c)(a−b−c) 0.7× (−0.2)
(a−b+c)(a−b−c) = (0.35)(−0.2) =2

42. A three-digit number 4a3 is added to another three-digit numbers 984 to give the four digit number

B 7

C 11

D 19
Answer: B

43. Four natural numbers, when added three at a time, give the sums 180, 197 and 208 and 222.
Smallest of the four numbers is

A 37

B 47

C 61
D 67
Answer: B

Explanation:
Let the four numbers be a,b,c,d. Hence a+b+c=180 a+b+d=197 a+c+d=208 and b+c+d=222
Adding all the four equations 3(a+b+c+d)= 807 or a+b+c+d= 269. To find the smallest number subtract the
maximum sum i.e. 222
So b+c+d=222 and a= 269-222=47
Hence 47 is the smallest of the four numbers
1
(1.331)−1 +(1.331)−2 +...+(1.331)−6 3
44. On simplification of [ (1.331)−2+(1.331)−3+...+(1.331)−7 ]

A 1.331

B (1.331)−2

C 1.331

D 1.1
Answer: D

Explanation:
Take 1.331 −1 common from the denominator. As a result of which the numerator and denominator
effectively cancel out. Hence the fraction effectivel becomes
1
1 3
( 1.331−1 )
1 1
3
or (1.331 1 ) = 1.331 3 = 1.1 which is the correct answer

45. A box has coins and beads, all of which are either silver or gold. Twenty percent of the objects in the
box are beads. Forty percent of the coins in the box are silver. What percent of the objects in the box
are gold coins?

A 40

B 48

C 60

D 80
Answer: B

Explanation:
Let the total number of objects in the box be "p". 0.2p objects are beads and 0.8p are coins. Out of 0.8p,
0.4(0.8p) or 0.32p coins are silver and 0.48p are gold coins.
Hence 48% of the total objects are gold coins.
46. A woman spends 80% of her income. With the increase in the cost of living, her expenditure

D 10.5
Answer: C

47. When one litre water is added to a mixture containing acid and water, the new mixture has 20% acid.
1
If one litre of acid is added to the new mixture, the resulting mixture has 33 3 % acid. The percentage
of water in the original mixture is

A 70%

B 75%

C 76%

D 78%
Answer: B

Explanation:
Let the mixture initially has "a" litres acid and "b" liters water. Now you add 1-litre water, hence the total
water is "b+1" litres.
According to question a=0.2(a+b+1) or 0.8a=0.2b +0.2 or 4a=b+1
Now one litre of acid is added to the mixture. Hence acid content is "a+1" and water content is "b+1"
Now a+1= 1/3(a+b+2) or 3a+3 = a+b+2 or 2a+1=b
Substituting above 4a= 2a+1+1 or 2a=2 or a=1 and b=3
Hence percentage of water in the original mixture is 3/(3+1) =3/4 or 75%

48. A merchant bought 749 pens. He sold 700 of them for the price he paid for 749 pens. He sold the
remaining pens at the same price per head as the other 700. The percent gain on the entire
transaction is

A 6
6.5
B

C 7

D 7.5
Answer: C

Explanation:
Let the cost price of each pen be "p". Hence total cost price of the pens is 749p. He sold 700 pens for 749p.
749
Selling price per pen is 700 p or 1.07p
Now selling price of the remaining 49 pens is 1.07p(49) or 52.43p.
Hence total selling price is 749p+52.43p = 801.43p
Total profit made isc 801.43p-749p =52.43p
52.43p
Profit percentage 749p × 100 = 7%
Hence net profit percentage is 7%

the ratio of the cost to the marked price was

A 1:2

B 2:3

C 4:9

D 3:5
Answer: A

Explanation:
Let the Cost Price of each dress be C and let the marked price of each dress be M.
She will be selling the dress at 1/4th off i.e at 3/4(M).
According to the question C= (2/3)(3/4)M= 1/2(M)
Hence C:M=1/2
50. Two candles have different lengths and different thicknesses. The shorter one would last 11 hours,

51. Two positive numbers x and y are inversely proportional. If x increases by p %, then y decreases by

A p%
p
B 1+p %

100
C p %

100p
D p+100 %

Answer: D

Explanation:
Since x and y are inversely proportional to each other then xy=k
p
Now x becomes x (1 + 100 )
m
Let's say y decreases by "m" percent. y (1 − 100 )
p m
Hence x (1 + 100 ) y (1 − 100 ) =k
p m
Now xy=k which cancels "k" from RHS (1 + 100 ) (1 − 100 ) =1
m 100
1− 100 = 100+p

100 m
1− 100+p = 100
100p
100+p =m
hence option 4 is the correct answer
