BUCKINGHAM PALACE
Besides being the official London residence of the Queen, Buckingham Palace is also the administrative headquarters
of the monarchy and has an easily recognisable façade with its famous balcony.
The Palace is a working building and the centrepiece of Britain’s constitutional monarchy. Inside it there are the offices
of those who support the activities and duties of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their immediate family.
The Palace is also the venue for great Royal ceremonies, State visits and investitures, all of which are organised by the
Royal Household. There are three wings around a central courtyard.
Although Buckingham Palace is furnished and decorated with priceless works of art that form part of the Royal
collection, it is not an art gallery and nor is it a museum. Its State Rooms form the nucleus of the working Palace are
used regularly by the Queen and the members of the Royal family for official and State entertaining.
More than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the Royal
Garden Parties. Visitors can join organised tours to some areas of the Palace.
During the summer, there is the Changing of the Guard at 11.30 a.m. at the front of the Palace; it lasts about 45
minutes. In the Queen’s Guard there are Foot Guards in full-dress uniform of red tunics and bearskins.
