Understanding Animals
What happens when you give a dolphin a mirror or a computer keyboard? Just ask
Diana Reiss. She studies how animals think. People like Reiss believe that dolphins
and other animals have emotions and personalities. Like people, they can think, learn,
and remember.
In her studies with dolphins and elephants, Reiss used a mirror. When the animals
looked in the mirror, they recognized themselves. They knew that they were different
from other animals.
In her studies with just dolphins, Reiss made a special keyboard. The keyboard had big
keys, and when the dolphins touched the keys, a computer made sounds and the
dolphins got a fun object or activity. The dolphins learned to use the keyboard by
themselves. They played with it and copied the sounds. They also learned which keys
to touch to get what they wanted.
Reiss showed that dolphins can think and find new ways to communicate. But that was
many years ago. Now, she is interested in what today’s technology can show us about
animal minds. How will an orangutan use an iPad? Can other animals connect with
each other through the internet?

Making Plans
I think making plans is important. I have two lists: one for my short-term plans and
another for my long-term plans.
Short-Term Plans
Today, I’m going to do laundry and clean the house. I also need to start studying for a
French test that I have next week. I have to finish both of these things before the weekend
because I have a lot of things to do on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday night, I’m planning to go out for pizza with Pat. But first, I’m going to the
beach during the day. The weather is going to be sunny and warm. Then, on Sunday, I’m
going to eat dinner with my parents at the new Indian restaurant in town. It’s their
anniversary.
Long-Term Plans
I’m not exactly sure about my long-term plans, but I do want to buy a new car. The car I
have now is really old—it was my grandfather’s! I want to get married one day, but not
before I graduate from college. I don’t know about having children. Babies really change
your life. The only long-term plan that I’m certain about is visiting Europe next summer!
16. The writer will do some housework on the weekend.
17. The writer’s short-term plans include studying and going out with her family.

Instructions: Read. Then decide whether the statements are true for one kind of energy, true for both
kinds of energy, or not true for either kind of energy.
Future Energy
We are going to have a big energy problem in the future. By the year 2100, we will use
three times more energy than today. How will we get the energy? Today, we get a lot
of energy from fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas. But fossil fuels are dirty, and
they will not last forever. In the long term, we will have to find other kinds of
renewable energy that will never run out.
Solar Power
Near Leipzig, in Germany, there is a field with 33,500 solar panels. It produces enough
energy for 1,800 homes. That’s a lot of clean energy! However, there are problems:
One problem is that solar energy is expensive, but the price is falling. The other
problem with solar power is that it needs a lot of space, and, of course, solar panels
don’t make energy at night.
Wind Power
On a cloudy day in Denmark, a wind turbine is producing clean electricity. Right now,
wind power is the best clean energy source. But again, there are problems: Some
people think wind turbines are ugly. And, sometimes, there are days when there is no
wind.

Natural Fashion
Is fashion bad for the environment? According to one report, the fashion industry
causes eight percent of the world’s pollution. One problem is the materials. Synthetic
(man-made) materials, like nylon, are made of plastic. This plastic does not disappear
easily. So, what about natural materials? Cotton is a natural material, but it has
problems, too. Cotton needs a lot of water and chemicals to grow, which hurts the
environment.
What can be done? One idea is to use plant material that people usually throw away.
Banana fiber is one example. In the past, people only ate the banana fruit and threw
away the rest of the plant. Now people can use the leaves and stem of the banana plant
to make “banana sylk” instead of using cotton or synthetic fibers.
Leather is another good example. Leather from cows is expensive because cows need a
lot of water, food, and time to grow. But now there is another choice. Like the banana
plant, the pineapple plant has found new uses. In the past, people threw away tough
pineapple leaves, but now, people can use them to make “pineapple leather.” It costs
much less than real leather and is much better for the environment.
41. Synthetic fibers cause about half of the pollution in the world.
42. “Pineapple leather” is the same price as cow leather.

The World’s Most Expensive Material?
Cotton is cool; wool is warm. They’re practical. But silk? Soft, strong, beautiful silk is
possibly the most expensive material in the world. In ancient Rome, it was more
expensive than gold. The secret of making silk was discovered in China more than
4,000 years ago. I went there to learn more about it.
The first person I visited was Shen Congwen at the Palace Museum in Beijing. He
showed me some ancient silk that workers found in Jianglin a long time ago. It was
very old, but still beautiful. I learned that, like today, silk in ancient China cost a lot of
money.
Why is silk so expensive? It is because it is hard to make. Silk for clothes mostly
comes from animals called silkworms, who only eat leaves from one tree—the
mulberry tree. Also, it takes many hours to turn silkworm cocoons into silk. You need
many cocoons to make clothes. For example, it takes 110 cocoons to make a tie, 630
cocoons to make a blouse, and 3,000 cocoons to make a kimono. But many people
believe silk’s beauty is worth it.

45. What is true about silkworms?
a. They are only found in China.

c. They only eat one kind of food.
46. What point does the writer make?
a. A tie uses more cocoons than a blouse.
b. A kimono uses fewer cocoons than a tie.
c. A blouse does not use the most cocoons.
