The literature review identifies critical research gaps relevant to Reclamation and the hydropower industry. Recommendations include studies on turbine efficiency loss due to vortex presence, the impact of vortex suppression devices, and a comprehensive inventory of Reclamation facilities to assess vortex formation and suppression needs. Addressing these gaps is essential for improving turbine performance and operational efficiency.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this literature review, there are significant gaps in research
that may be important to Reclamation as well as the hydropower industry. These
include;

1. A study to determine the loss of turbine efficiency when a vortex is

present.
2. A study to determine the loss of turbine efficiency when a vortex
suppression device is install to reduce the formation of a vortex.
3. A study that will perform a full inventory of Reclamation facilities (both
hydropower and non-hydropower) to determine occurrence of vortex
formation, and if vortex suppression is advised.
