Prepositions of Time – A1/A2 ESL Guide
We use prepositions of time to show when something happens. The three most common are: in,
on, and at.
      Preposition     Used For…                             Examples
      in              Months, Years, Parts of day, Longerinperiods
                                                            July, in 1999, in the morning
      on              Days, Dates, Specific Days            on Monday, on July 5th, on my birthday
      at              Clock times, Holidays (no 'day'), Night
                                                           at 5 o’clock, at Christmas, at night
IN
Use for: Months, Years, Parts of day, Longer periods
Examples:
- I was born in 2007.
- We have breakfast in the morning.
- The flowers bloom in spring.
ON
Use for: Specific days, Dates, Special days
Examples:
- The party is on Friday.
- I will see you on December 10th.
- He was born on Valentine’s Day.
AT
Use for: Clock times, Holidays (no 'day'), Expressions
Examples:
- The train arrives at 9:15.
- We go to the temple at New Year.
- I sleep at night.
Common Mistakes
     Wrong                                         Correct
     I was born on 1998.                           I was born in 1998.
     The class is on 5:00.                         The class is at 5:00.
     We go skiing on winter.                       We go skiing in winter.
