Animal Science: is concerned with the science and business of producing

Domestic, livestock species,

Animal Science Career Opportunities: Global forces are demanding more from the
agriculture industry. A growing world population with changing patterns of diet requires
more food.
1. Allied animal industries such as feed and equipment manufacturers, artificial
breeding associations, pharmaceutical firms, meat processors,
2. Breeding and livestock marketing organizations employ animal scientists as field
Representatives, managers, consultants, market forecasters, and public relations
specialists.
3. Extension educators with animal sciences training find professional teaching
Positions, as state and area livestock specialists and county agricultural agents.
4. Food processors, meat packers, and related industries seek persons with meat
Science, background for positions in management,
5. Government agencies employ persons with undergraduate or advanced training in
The animal sciences as administrative or technical specialists in livestock marketing,
6. Livestock breeders and feedlot operators seek persons with strong animal
Sciences, and business training for positions in production management, animal
nutrition, physiology, and behavior..
7. Researchers and laboratory technicians are employed by many government
Agencies, and private firms, working in such specialized fields as animal breeding and
reproduction,
8. Self-employed persons with animal sciences training develop professional careers in
Such, diverse fields as farm and feedlot operation, management services, consulting,
Livestock, marketing, animal breeding, and kennel or clinic operations.
9. State and national organizations such as the National Cattlemen's Association,
National Pork Producers Council,
10. Universities, colleges, and other educational organizations employ persons
With, advanced animal sciences training as teachers, researchers, laboratory
technicians, and extension specialists.

Based on Utility
1 . Dairy or milk or milch type breeds: Cows of this type are high milk producers.
Bullocks are of poor work quality.
2. Draught type breeds: Cows of this type produce very less milk. Bullocks are very
powerful and good draught animals.
Contributions of Animals to Humanity
1. Food Source: Humans are omnivores, consuming both plant and animal-based
foods. Meat, eggs, and dairy products are important food sources because
they are nutrient dense.
2. Body Coverings: Other animal products are also of great importance to
humans, such as: wool, hair, other fibers for clothing, feathers and hides for
cloting, footwear and apparel.
3. Work: transportation of goods to and from the markets.
4. Body Waste: (Manure) Pharmaceuticals, insecticides, crayons, cosmetics,
plastics, cellophane, glass, water filters, plywood adhesive, soap, gelatin, air
filters, animal feeds, etc.
5. Other Uses
- Animals are use as models for human in biomedical research helping to extend
human life span.

What is Binomial Nomenclature?

Was introduced by Carl Linnaeus. Multiple local names make it extremely difficult to
identify an organism globally and keep a track of the number of species.
Rules ofBinomial Nomenclature
- A Biologist from all over the world follows a uniform set of principles for naming the
organisms.
Why is Binomial Nomenclature Important?
As stated previously, there are millions of species of organisms distributed throughout
the world

Taxonomic classification ofanimals

Taxonomy is the branch of biology concerned with the naming and classification of
living organisms (plants and animals).
Caroleus Linnaeus (1707 – 1778), the Swedish Botanist is considered as the Father of
Taxonomy.

The following are the common terminologies used in Animal Science:

1. Livestock: means stock (items of property) that is live and is used for the production
of items of commercial importance or for domestic consumption.
2. Production: is doing or performing all that is necessary for the efficient and economic
results from livestock, their handling and marketing.
3. Livestock Production Management: is carrying out a large number of operations
aimed at making the animals produce more at lower costs
4. Domestic animal: is one that has entered in to a state of permanent partnership with
man. This includes control of breeding and feeding.
6. Farmed animals: are those animals that are farmed by man throughout the world
and are used for the production of important items for man.
