What is Geography - came from the Greek words “ geo” “ Graphy”


- it is a science more than writing (Rubenstein, et al,2013).
- “description of the earth” (Hobbs,2007).
- According to the Royal Geographical Society, they define geography is “ the
study of Earth’s landscape, people, places and environment”.

GEO - meaning “Earth”

GRAPHY - means“ to write”.

Elements of Geography - The National Geographical Society identified six essential elements of
Geography (Hobbs,2007),

THESE ARE:

1. World in Spatial Terms - Geography studies the relationship between people, places, and
environments by mapping information about them into a spatial
context.
2. Places and Region - The identities and lives of individual and people are rooted in
particular places and in those human constructs called regions.

3. Physical System - Physical process shapes Earth’s surface and interacts with plant and
animal life to create, sustain, and modify ecosystems.

4. Human System - People are central to geography. Human activities, settlements, and
structures help shape the Earth’s surface, and humans have
complete control of the Earth’s surface.

5. Environment and Society


- The Physical environment is influenced by the way in which human
society values and use the earth’s physical features and processes.
6. Use of Geography - Knowledge of geography enables people to develop an understanding of
the relationships between people, places, and environments over time
that is earths as it was is and it might be.

Role of Geography in the - The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) states that “
Tourism tourism comprises the activities of a person traveling to and staying in
places outside their usual environment for not more than one
consecutive year for leisure, business, and other purposes”. The
definition revealed the geographical characteristics of tourism as it
covers people and their activities. Places destinations and
environments.
This simply gives us an idea of the roles of geography in tourism such as the following:

▪ Product of Tourism and Travel - Attractions are the most important pillar of tourism which serves as
Motivator the major travel motivator that drives tourists to seek new
destinations. Understanding tourist motivation for travelin essential
to the business aspect of the tourism industry. The desire to travel
is ignited by the idea of discovering by the idea of discovering the
world’s wonders. These can be landforms, bodies of water, climate,
people, and culture.

- Climate refers to the existing weather conditions in a region. In the

ocean and sea.
- Cruising is one of the activities tourists enjoy and get excited about.

 Waterfalls - are cascades of water running down to a natural basin.

 Angel falls which is the highest in the world.

- Seas are bodies of salt water, apart from their charm, various
activities also draw tourists to seas.

❖ Lakes - are large inland bodies of water. Lagoons are shallow sea water
divided by a sand bar or coral reef. Snorkeling activities can be the
best experience of these.

❖ Oceans
- are enormous bodies of water..

 There are four major


 Pacific Ocean,
oceans in the world
 Indian Ocean,
 Atlantic Ocean,
 Arctic Ocean.

Landforms are formations on the earth's surface. These are mountains and plateaus.

❖ Mountains - land formations attracting travelers with great interest in hiking and
climbing.
Mt. Kilimanjaro
 popular mountains Tanzania
Mt. Everest
Nepal
and Andes, Peru

❖ Valleys - are lowland areas between hills or mountains. Sometimes a river runs
through it.

❖ Plateaus or high plains  Valley of Geysers Napa

 and Haa valley, Bhutan.

❖ Plateaus or high plains


- are remarkable land formation where the top of highest point of
elevation is flat or plain.

❖ Travel or itinerary planning - Tourism Practitioners and tourists find geography significant in
tourism in terms of traveling or itinerary planning. Often having
limited time, tourists find geography essential, as if helps in

Passport - is a major requirement in traveling outside one’s country. It is an
official and legal document issued by the government to its citizens.
There are different types of passports in the Philippines issued by
the Department of Foreign Affairs:

Regular Passport - issued to Filipinos traveling internationally.

Diplomatic Passports - are provided to diplomatic officials of the country.

Official Passport - issued for the official business to the employees of the Philippines
government.

In securing a Philippine passport one is required:

1. Personal Appearance at the Department of Foreign Affairs or any of their satellite offices.

2. Have a confirmed appointment made before the appearance at the Department of Foreign Affairs office.
The passport will coast PHP1,250 for rush filling and Php950 for regular filling. It takes 7-14 working days for
rush filling and 10-15 working days for regular filling.

3. Accomplish a print application form that can be downloaded from the DFA website
https://www.passport.gov.ph/appointment

4. Bring all the requirements documents such as PSA birth certificate 2 copy, PSA Marriage Certificate
(married woman), 1 valid government ID. For minor applicants school ID, PSA birth certificate, and
Certificate of enrollment with dry seal of the school.

5. After your personal appearance and application with for your passport to pick up at the DFA satellite
office.
