help the mystery behind the case. Holmes is shown always ahead of Dr.
Watson in solving the mystery. He has exceptional reasoning and analytical skills
and can connect the dots effortlessly. His deductions are always correct. He always
focuses on rationality and logic and never brings emotions in his way of solving a
case.
• The Theme of the novel - 'The sign of four'
The theme of the novel revolves around the mystery of Agra Treasure.
The story is about the mysterious disappearance of Miss Mary Morstan's father, the
expensive pearls that Mary receives every year thereafter and the anonymous letter
to Mary asking for a meeting. It involves the Journey of Sherlock Holmes, Dr.
Watson and Mary to a strange house in suburban London.
Miss Mary Morstan receives a lustrous pearl every year for past six years.
These pearls represent the theme of wealth.
It is Detective Holmes' insightful deduction that Major Sholto's heir had
information about Captain Morstan's disappearance. They were trying to compensate
all the wrong done to Miss Mary Morstan by sending her a precious pearl every year,
represents the theme of Justice in this novel.
