STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I have always been interested in how technology drives industry innovation through
automation and digitalisation. As a professional with a strong engineering background
and as a software systems quality engineer with almost 5 years of experience, I have
realized the importance of automation, quality engineering and system reliability to the
modern changes. This diverse experience has sparked interest in me and motivated
me to upgrade my skill sets in areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and
computer engineering to become a well-rounded engineering expert. The Master’s
program in Electrical and Computer engineering at University of Waterloo will be a wise
decision to specialize even further and boost my professional standing.
My educational background has given me a solid basis in subjects like mathematics,
electrical and electronics engineering and programming skills which I feel will be a
valuable asset to learn the concepts of hardware and software components of a
computer system. This interdisciplinary nature of my experiences bridging engineering
and IT has sharpened my critical thinking and I have always sought to merge these
skills effectively in my career. I am also eager to specialize my understanding in the
fields of computer architecture, networks and signals which will provide me a
comprehensive grasp of the system architecture.
Throughout my academic career, I have garnered numerous academic achievements
right from participating in science competitions to a department topper. Being a tech
enthusiast, I chose STEM classes in high school. The knowledge I gained through my
major subjects like computer science and mathematics has cultivated a strong analytical
and problem-solving mindset. I meritoriously completed my higher secondary education
and went on to pursue my undergraduate degree at Kumaraguru College of Technology,
Coimbatore.
Due to the deep interest in automobiles and machines from my childhood, I chose my
bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering which provided technical foundations to
understand the complex systems and solve real-world engineering problems. I
developed an interest in programming languages like C and continue to learn and
enhance my programming skills besides my core courses like dynamics of machines,
computer aided engineering, product design and development. I have also participated
in volunteer activities and organized symposiums and seminars. These vibrant skills
allowed me to excel in my undergraduate studies.
However, as I progressed through my degree and gained exposure about various
industries, I figured out the dominance of information technology and its use cases in
various industries. I have used my programming skills for operating CNC machines and
understood how systems are integrated to work with software. The advancement of
new technologies in the IT industry given its high growth potential, captivated me and
landed me as a software quality assurance engineer at Accenture Solutions.
My work experience at Accenture has given me many opportunities to use programming
languages in real-life applications. I was involved in both manual and automation testing
for multiple projects by ensuring end to end quality of software products. I got
experience in every stage of software testing and development life cycle. Working with
clients across the globe has further developed my interpersonal communication skills.
In addition to my work, I have proactively registered for technical workshops for data
analytics, completed AWS cloud practitioner exam and quality engineering courses.
Moreover, I have closely worked with the data engineering and analytics team for test
data generation, which sparked my interest in areas like cloud infrastructure, AI/ML
models for data sourcing and motivated me to upgrade my skill sets in these domains.
One of the key tasks that I worked on my project was integrating the automation testing
results in a client’s cloud based systems. As a quality engineer, I ensured integration of
all APIs and automation pipeline results are reflected for every run. I collaborated with
software and cloud engineering teams to understand the continuous integration and
continuous deployment (CI/CD) process, and tested the stability of systems and
performance under varying loads of results. This task has deepened my understanding
of how systems connect and work together by integrating with APIs and a complete
workflow can be created for any requirement.
The main reason to opt Canada for my graduate studies is that the country has always
been more than stayed true to its solid reputation as a hub for technological
advancements. The University of Waterloo which is located in Ontario, is the tech
ecosystem of Canada making it the ideal location for my studies. Moreover, the
program’s hands-on training on professional development and 8 different specializations
will have options to expand my knowledge base. Also core subjects like intelligent
sensors and networks, signal processing are the ones I am keen to develop my
understanding. Adding to that, University of Waterloo has consistently been known for
its strong engineering and research background with leading co-op opportunities which
will provide me hands-on experience to advance my career and give me a competitive
edge in the job market.
Hence, I strongly believe that my engineering and technical background from my work
experience would support me as an eligible candidate for the master’s degree at
University of Waterloo. I am confident that the program will contribute the skills and
knowledge that I seek for and also the opportunity to advance my career in this
ever-growing field of technology.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to joining as a graduate
student, who would like to contribute and grow himself at University of Waterloo.
