I’ve been at this project for several years during which I’ve amassed debts
to many individuals and institutions. Early ‹nancial support came in the
form of grants from the University of Michigan School of Music Faculty
Research Fund and the University of Michigan Of‹ce of the Vice Provost
for Research. University of Michigan Senior Vice Provost Lester Monts
provided further invaluable assistance. I also received generous support
from the Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music, which
took me to London at the invitation of Nicholas Cook to present some of
my research at the inaugural Art of Record Production conference. One
of my research projects involved reading a couple of decades’ worth of
Billboard, which kicked off with some very helpful initial indexing by
Stephanie Heriger. I am grateful to the university libraries and librarians
at Michigan, Harvard, Columbia, Memphis (Tennessee Valley Collec-
tion), Buffalo, Syracuse, and Albany, along with the New York Public Li-
brary and the great cooperative known as Interlibrary Loan, for access to
sources and all-around helpfulness. I would single out in particular Daryl
Bullis at the University at Albany and Charles Reynolds at the University
of Michigan, whose above-and-beyond research assistance was matched
only by their cheerful collegiality.
Many writers—critics, scholars, biographers, historians—have kindly
given of their time and expertise. For their many tips and insights, I thank
Bruce Jenkins, Dave Marsh, Jas Obrecht, Joel Selvin, Colin Escott, Susan
Schmidt Horning, Walt Everett, John Covach, Richard Carlin, and Marv
Goldberg. Conversations early on with recording veterans Jim Dickin-
son, Larry Levine, Dave Gold, Stan Ross, Roland Janes, Earl Palmer,
Cosimo Matassa, and Carol Kaye gave me a tangible connection to the
time I wanted to write about. These interviews were a key step in bring-
ing the book’s vast, diffuse topic into focus. Nourishing talks with friends
and colleagues are vital in the otherwise solitary research and book-writ-
ing process. Thanks to Alex Stewart, Travis Jackson, Andy Flory, John
Howland, Nancy Newman, Matt Malsky, Michael Long, Serge Lacasse,

Mark Spicer, Gabriel Solis, Rich Crawford, Phil Ford, Eric Santos, Peter
Schmelz, Mark Clague, Daniel Worley, Thomas Bass, Simon Zagorski-
Thomas, and John Prihoda for sharing ideas, sources, stories, tunes, and
jokes. I owe a special debt of thanks to Bill Shea. Expert in the repertory,
historiography, and technological issues of postwar pop music, he read
the entire manuscript and returned it with copious annotations. I’m
grateful for his interest and willingness to share his knowledge, and the
book is certainly better for it.
Acquisitions editor Chris Hebert, who ‹rst brought me in to the Uni-
versity of Michigan Press to propose and ultimately coedit the Tracking
Pop series, has been my trusted reader and sounding board. I have relied
on his eye, ear, and literary intelligence throughout the process. Press di-
rector Phil Pochoda was an early supporter of both the series and this
book. And my series coeditors, Lori Burns and John Covach, have been,
as they remain, a pleasure to work with. I appreciate the feedback from
the anonymous readers whose comments led me to further re‹ne the
manuscript, and the editorial precision and general helpfulness of the
press’s editorial and production staff.
Research trips require room and board. Cynthia Thomas, Andrew
and Maria Zak, and John and Jitka Wiley shared their homes and ‹ne
company over many days and nights. Since I wrote this book while serv-
ing as chair of the Music Department at Albany, logistical support has
been critical. For the reliable daily assistance that allowed me time to
write, I am deeply indebted to Bernadette Socha, whose of‹cial title of
Music Department secretary hardly begins to describe her role. Finally,
for all-around support, my family—parents and siblings, my wife Victo-
ria, and my daughter Sally—have been, as ever, true blue. My heartfelt
thanks to all who helped me get from there to here.
Introduction
The story of American popular music in the 1950s has about it the feel of
absurdist ‹ction. Even the bare outline is strange to recount: how the na-
tion drifted away from its love affair with the grand tradition of big band
swing music and into a period of musical nihilism; how once stable con-
ventions of musical style and practice were overwhelmed by tides of aim-
less novelty; how inanimate musical objects—records—became the most
common medium of musical experience; how young, unschooled musi-
cians rose almost overnight to positions once reserved for those of the
highest professional attainment; how entrepreneurs with little experience
of the music business and just as little capital competed effectively with
large and powerful corporations; how the whims of teenagers exerted a
deciding aesthetic and commercial authority in the music marketplace;
how popular music came to both re›ect and contribute to changes in
America’s social and cultural fabric; and how beneath a surface of ap-
parent trivia ran a deep current of transformation.
Several historical accounts have mapped aspects of the ‹fties’ musical
terrain. Among these, the early standouts are Arnold Shaw’s The Rockin’
Fifties (and its complement, Honkers and Shouters) and Charlie Gillett’s
The Sound of the City, which take an encyclopedic approach to the
decade’s tumultuous music business. By contrast, Glenn Altschuler’s All
Shook Up, Michael Bertrand’s Race, Rock, and Elvis, and Brian Ward’s
Just My Soul Responding concentrate on the music’s role in social his-
tory. Philip Ennis crafts a useful hybrid of the two approaches in The Sev-
enth Stream, which will make an appearance in my chapter 4. And James
Miller, in Flowers in the Dustbin, offers a critical account from the per-
spective of a longtime rock music journalist with a scholarly turn of
mind.
Despite these commendable works, I was drawn deeper into the topic
by a host of unanswered questions. The problem might be summarized in
a single illustrative musical contrast: compare Bing Crosby and the An-
drews Sisters’ “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” to the Byrds’ “Mr. Tam-
2 • I Don’t Sound Like Nobody
bourine Man,” top-tier pop hits in 1945 and 1965, respectively. Though
separated by a mere twenty years, these records bear stark differences in
their conceptions of songwriting, performance style, rhythmic feel, in-
strumentation, arranging, and record production. How does their histor-
ical proximity square with such unquali‹ed contrast? What explains such
a rapid reorientation of the pop mainstream? How was the musical econ-
omy and its lingua franca so transformed? The rise of rock and roll—the
unlikely, upstart, music industry party crasher—has long provided the
pat answer. But the emergence of rock and roll itself poses yet more ques-
tions. What sort of market turmoil would admit largely amateur and in-
elegant records into the company of the industry establishment’s pop
‹nery? How could inexperienced, overnight stars eclipse Crosby and
Sinatra? What public mood encouraged such widespread aesthetic re-
volt? The postwar period was clearly a watershed for American pop mu-
sic, but what were the causes and what changes accrued to the nation’s
public soundscape and its musical consciousness?
These are the broad questions that impelled this book. The clues to
the story would certainly lie in the era’s hit records—those that managed
to stake a place in the public ear and heart—which have over time
evolved from entertainment commodities to historical documents. While
myriad events shaped the postwar musical climate, the key catalyst was
sound recording. As collaborative artworks, records represent the spec-
trum of pop music’s artists and artisans: songwriters, arrangers, perform-
ers, producers, and sound engineers. As commodities they fueled the am-
bitions and imaginations of entrepreneurs and offered the general
public—with each retail purchase or jukebox selection—the opportunity
to make known a personal aesthetic choice. As historical witnesses, they
report what went into their making and give us an accurate account of
what captured the contemporary ear. As radio programming, they are
mass media; on a phonograph, they provide the soundtrack to an indi-
vidual life. Operating in all these capacities, records in the postwar years
fueled a cultural dynamism beyond anyone’s control. They enabled, even
fostered, a revolution and then remained to provide their own account of
what had happened.
The early signs of upheaval were apparent in the waning position of
swing era jazz. The swing era (from roughly 1930 to 1945), which
spawned and sustained the big bands, was a time of extraordinary
artistry in American popular music. It was a period when popular song
and cutting-edge jazz merged to form a sophisticated entertainment mu-
sic that delighted both connoisseur and casual fan. Its conventional prac-
tices amounted to a common language shared among composers,

arrangers, performers, and a broad musical public. There was an ever-
expanding body of repertory that included a core of canonic standards.
Performance practices demanded a high level of technical competence.
The idiom represented the artistic aspirations of a generation of gifted
musicians even as it was embraced across the social spectrum as the most
popular music in the land. It was “a style and aesthetic of jazz,” wrote
Gunther Schuller in his epic account, The Swing Era, “which re›ected a
preponderance of American popular taste.” It was “the only time in its
history when jazz was completely in phase with the social environment,
and when it both captured and re›ected the broadest musical common-
denominator of popular taste in the nation.”1
In the wake of the swing bands’ exit from pop’s center stage, there
arose an unprecedented traf‹c in recordings of diverse idiom and prove-
nance. Each week saw the release of more than a hundred new records,
infusing the market with a rambunctious energy the industry could
scarcely control. While the nation’s common soundtrack had long been
shaped by forces in New York and Hollywood, records now issued from
almost every region of the country and were aimed at almost every kind
of audience, a musical Babel re›ecting the nation’s own unruly cultural
mix. In their day, the prominent bands were relatively stable musical in-
stitutions whose life cycles lasted at least several years. A hit record, on
the other hand, might catch the public fancy overnight, often fading just
as quickly in a universe of records vying for the public ear—like stars
burning at differing intensities, ›ickering on and off at random, and
sometimes shooting across the sky.
Swing was the culmination of a popular music tradition that stretched
back to the early nineteenth century and included a wealth of entertain-
ment music: society orchestras, “military” bands, a multihued solo piano
repertory, singing groups of all sorts, Broadway shows, Tin Pan Alley
songs, and Hollywood ‹lms (both silent and talkies). The common
thread among all of these was music notation, a technology that, in the
form of song sheets and arrangements, captured musical thought and
provided a medium for commodi‹cation. Swing jazz, of course, also in-
cluded improvised music making, but its tunes and arrangements were
squarely within the written tradition. There was, meanwhile, a new tech-
nology abroad—sound recording—that captured not only musical
thought but action. As such, it had the potential to change the concept of
music “writing” altogether to include sound as an element of music in-
scription. For centuries, while notated music was rendered anew with
each performance, its only enduring form was on the page. No ephemeral
instance of a piece could claim to be the piece. Sound recording, however,
4 • I Don’t Sound Like Nobody
blurred the historical distinction between writing and performing, as-
cribing to sound the same ‹xed, de‹ning qualities as notes, rhythms, and
words. This de facto reality took some time to sink in, for it required a re-
thinking of age-old ideas.
I begin with an account of the music industry’s early dif‹culties in
coming to terms with recordings, and, in one way or another, the theme
is a recurring one throughout the book. While records were a key factor
in reshaping postwar pop—removing most barriers that had historically
con‹ned certain music to certain audiences and affording record makers
a nimble medium for creative experiment—it took many years of con-
tentious wrangling for their potential to be unleashed. Publishers, per-
forming rights societies, record companies, radio networks, government
agencies, and individual musicians and their collective union all tussled in
the courts over questions of records’ value and purpose. A slippery con-
ceptual problem underlay the debate. For while mundane ‹nancial con-
cerns drove the negotiations and court battles, the persistent dif‹culty in
arriving at lasting agreements lay in the new technology’s alchemic power
to reshape the very nature of music and, in turn, its role in society and the
marketplace. Musical sound had never before known permanence and its
corollary, repeatability. The far-reaching rami‹cations of this new status
whittled away at the structures of the musical economy as old attitudes
persisted in vain attempts to force recordings to behave according to his-
torical precedent. The rapid evolution of record production and recep-
tion in the postwar years re›ected a dawning realization that sound
recording’s transformative potential was already at work on the public
mind. Its power, in the end, was irresistible; it was time to embrace the
machine as a musical partner.
While the postwar marketplace suddenly teemed with upstart record
labels releasing music unfamiliar to the mainstream, the effects of the
new recording culture also disturbed long-established habits at the major
labels. Chapter 2 focuses on what was widely referred to (by some en-
thusiastically, by others derisively) as the “new sound,” a new pop wave
that diverged markedly from the swing ethos. Mainstream pop records
reached new levels of arti‹ce as it became common to manipulate sound
using various electronic techniques, to invent ad hoc instrumental en-
sembles and outlandish arrangements, and to record songs that, by Tin
Pan Alley standards, fell in the category of novelty—trashy, throwaway
amusement. In a decade ‹lled with critical controversy, dire predictions
of cultural demise, and a persistent wish for a return of the high-pop big
bands, records like Frankie Laine’s “Mule Train” and Johnnie Ray’s
“Cry” were among the initial wave of hit records to raise the alarm. The
Introduction • 5
critical consensus held that sound recording was meant not to invade and
manipulate real world musical experience but to document it and make it
portable; studio trickery was an unseemly affront to musical intelligence.
Mitch Miller, Columbia’s head of A&R (artists and repertoire) for pop
singles, was a perennial whipping boy, yet he was also the most success-
ful record producer of the time. What were widely dismissed by his crit-
ics as “gimmicks” he saw as creative innovation, and with the public’s en-
thusiastic acceptance he spearheaded a blasphemous conception of
record production that prized novelty of song, arrangement, perfor-
mance, and sound.
While the effervescent tricks of record making proved enormously
popular, the public mood also suggested a more encompassing notion of
novelty that included a curiosity for the wonders of unfamiliar musical
idioms. Taking advantage of this demand were the hustling independent
record men who tenaciously pursued hits in places the musical establish-
ment had rarely explored. Chapter 3 moves off the industry’s beaten
paths to where hustlers pursued unheralded performers and rushed them
via records onto the national stage. As the discs spun over the airwaves,
they reached audiences no one even knew existed, adventurous young lis-
teners with surprisingly catholic tastes. Music by black performers, their
voices unvarnished for mainstream sensibilities, increasingly inhabited
the same market as mainstream pop stars. Records by young performers
more spirited than skilled spun alongside the best efforts of seasoned en-
tertainers. Production standards no major label would tolerate seemed
only to add a poignant charm to rough-hewn discs made in garages and
storefronts.
As record buyers behaved unpredictably, industry veterans faced the
ongoing conundrum explored in chapter 4: crossover. Markets had long
been organized to cater to speci‹c social and regional groups. But when
large numbers of records spilled out of their intended markets in response
to unexpected audience demand, the system grew volatile. Guesswork,
luck, theft, creativity, and plain accident all played a part in navigating
the industry’s ongoing tumult. Ultimately the dynamism, in both the in-
dustry and the broader society, produced a generation of young musi-
cians for whom an eclectic universe of records was the chief frame of mu-
sical reference. Theirs was a sensibility infused not only with a multitude
of stylistic idioms but a willingness to mix those styles indiscriminately,
which the recording medium deftly accommodated. In “writing” records,
recording teams could forge collages of divergent performance styles that
rede‹ned the notion of authenticity.
