The trouble is that, even though computers can turn (6. SPEAK) into text, recognise
objects by using cameras, search through (7. END) amounts of data and even use robot

III. Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question.
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will
cause a disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the
biggest mistakes which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware
of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great
damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but
are ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the
parents are very supportive of their child.
Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by
taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even
drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little
about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes
Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.
Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful
musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as
successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very
unhappy when he doesn’t win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents
and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

A. force their children into achieving success
B. understand and help their children sensibly
C. themselves have been very successful
D. arrange private lessons for their children
3. Who have criticized the methods of some ambitious parents?

C. Their children D. Educational psychologists
4. Michael Collins is fortunate in that _____________.
5
A. his father is a musician B. his parents are quite rich
C. his mother knows little about music D. his parents help him in a sensible way
5. The phrase “crazy about” in the passage most likely means “ _______”.
A. “surprised at” B. “extremely interested in”
C. “completely unaware of” D. “confused about”
6. Winston’s parents push their son so much and he _________.
A. has won a lot of piano competition B. can’t learn much music from them
C. has become a good musician D. is afraid to disappoint them
7. The word “They” in the passage refers to __________.
A. concerts B. violin lessons
C. parents in general D. Michael’s parents
8. The word “unwilling” in the passage mostly means _________.
A. “getting ready to do something” B. “eager to do something”
C. “not objecting to doing anything” D. “not wanting to do something”
9. All of the following people are musicians EXCEPT ________.
A. Winston’s father B. Winston’s mother
C. Michael’s father D. Michael’s mother
10. The two examples given in the passage illustrate the principle that __________.
A. successful parents always have intelligent children
B. successful parents often have unsuccessful children

III. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C, D) for each question or
sentence.
What is ‘extreme’ weather? Why are people talking about it these days? ‘Extreme’ weather
is an unusual weather event such as rainfall, a drought or a heat wave in the wrong place or
at the wrong time. In theory, they are very rare. But these days, our TV screens are
constantly showing such extreme weather events. Take just three news stories from 2010:
28 centimetres of rain fell on Riode Janeiro in 24 hours, Nashville, USA, had 33 centimetres
of rain in two days and there was record rainfall in Pakistan.
1
0
The effects of this kind of rainfall are dramatic and lethal. In Rio de Janeiro, landslides
followed, burying hundreds of people. In Pakistan, the floods affected 20 million people.
Meanwhile, other parts of the world suffer devastating droughts. Australia, Russia and East
Africa have been hit in the last ten years. And then there are unexpected heat waves, such as
in 2003 in Europe. That summer, 35.000 deaths were said to be heat-related.
So, what is happening to our weather? Are these extreme events part of a natural cycle? Or
are they caused by human activity and its effects on the Earth’s climate? Peter Miller says
it’s probably a mixture of both of these things. On the one hand, the most important
influences on weather events are natural cycles in the climate. Two of the most famous
weather cycles, El Niño and La Niña, originate in the Pacific Ocean. The heat from the
warm ocean rises high into the atmosphere and affects weather all around the world. On the
other hand, the temperature of the Earth’s oceans is slowly but steadily going up. And this is
a result of human activity. We are producing greenhouse gases that trap heat in the Earth’s
atmosphere. This heat warms up the atmosphere, land and oceans. Warmer oceans produce
more water vapor - think of heating a pan of water in your kitchen. Turn up the heat, it
produces steam more quickly. Satellite data tells US that the water vapor in the atmosphere
has gone up by four percent in 25 years. This warm, wet air turns into the rain, storms,
hurricanes and typhoons that we are increasingly experiencing. Climate scientist, Michael
Oppenheimer, says that we need to face the reality of climate change. And we also need to
act now to save lives and money in the future.
1. It is stated in the passage that extreme weather is ______.
A. becoming more common B. not a natural occurrence

3. What caused thousands of deaths in 2003?

ROOTED IN THE PAST (de trong S BT anh9)

Good manners are a treasure to the people who possess them, as well as to the
community they live in. Manners are taught, learnt, and passed from generation to
generation.
Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt
to respect seniority. When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both
hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow and greet the oldest person first. Boys
