Globalization is the process through which ideas, information, goods, services, and knowledge

are shared globally. In business, it refers to the integration of economies through free trade, the
movement of capital between countries, and access to global resources, including labor, to
optimize profits and contribute to the collective welfare. ( Peterson Institute for International
Economics, 2024). This interconnectedness fosters economic growth, cultural exchange, and
innovation, while also presenting challenges such as economic inequality, environmental
concerns, and the risk of cultural homogenization, yet globalization continues to shape our
interactions both locally and globally.
The term globalization was first used in 1930 in a publication titled “Towards New
Education”, where it referred to a broad overview of human experience in education. Earlier, in
1897, Charles Russell Tazel used the term "giant corporations" to describe large national trusts
and enterprises of that era. From the 1960s, both terms began to be used interchangeably by
economists and social science researchers, a trend that continued until the mid-1980s. Since its
conceptualization, globalization has inspired various interpretations and definitions, with its
history tracing back to the major commercial and imperial movements across Asia and the
Indian Ocean as early as the fifteenth century (Cuterela, 2024).
The history of globalization traces the growing interconnectedness of the world over
centuries, starting with ancient trade routes like the Silk Road, which facilitated cultural and
economic exchanges. During the Age of Exploration (15th–17th centuries,) European powers
expanded their influence through colonization and the transatlantic slave trade, forming early
global networks. The Industrial Revolution (19th century) advanced globalization through
improved transportation and communication, while the 20th century brought setbacks like the
world wars and the Great Depression, alongside the creation of international institutions after
World War II. By the late 20th century, globalization intensified with technological
advancements, market liberalization, and the rise of multinational corporations, leading to
today's interconnected global economy (World Economic Forum, 2019)
Globalization is crucial because it enables countries to trade, exchange ideas, and
collaborate, leading to economic growth and new innovations. It also helps people learn about
different cultures and access improved products and services. However, it can also cause
issues like inequality and harm to the environment, which need to be addressed for everyone to
gain from it.
Ultimately, while globalization brings many opportunities for growth and connection, it
also presents significant challenges that require careful management. To ensure it benefits, it is
essential to address its negative impacts and work towards more inclusive and sustainable
practices.
