1. Motivation Title: “What If a Body Part Refused to Work?”

Time Required: 10–15 minutes
Materials Needed: None (optional: a simple body diagram or
paper cutouts of body parts)
Instructions:
1. Scenario Presentation:
Begin the class with a question:
“Imagine your body — your heart, brain, stomach, lungs, and legs

legs decided they didn’t want to work anymore? Or your stomach
said, ‘I quit’?”
2. Small Group Discussion (5 minutes):
Divide the class into small groups and ask them:
o What would happen if one part of the body stopped
functioning?
o How would it affect the other parts?

Address: IBJT Compound, Carangan, Ozamiz City

4. Present it in 1-2 minutes in class.

1. Conformity occurs when an individual has the means and desire

to achieve the cultural goals socialized into them.

✅ Example Scenario: Conformity in School

Scenario:
Maria is a new student at a senior high school. On her first day, she
notices that most of her classmates wear trendy sneakers and style
their hair in a similar way. Though Maria usually wears simple
sandals and ties her hair in a ponytail, she starts feeling out of
place.

The next week, Maria asks her parents to buy her the same style of
sneakers and begins copying the hairstyles of her classmates. Even
though she prefers her own style, she changes her appearance to fit
in and avoid standing out.

🔍 Explanation:

 Type of conformity: Normative Conformity – Maria

conforms to the group's behavior to gain social acceptance
and avoid rejection.
 Reason: Desire to fit in and be liked.
 Social Pressure Source: Her peer group (classmates).

2. Innovation occurs when an individual strives to attain the

accepted cultural goals but chooses to do so in a novel or
unaccepted method.

✅ Example Scenario: Innovation (Strain Theory)

Scenario:
John comes from a low-income neighborhood. He dreams of
becoming wealthy and successful, just like the people he sees on
TV and social media. However, he doesn’t have access to quality
education or job opportunities.

Instead of following the traditional route (education → career →

wealth), John begins selling counterfeit designer products online.

He knows it’s illegal, but it’s his way of achieving the cultural goal
of financial success when the accepted route seems closed to him.

🔍 Explanation:

 Cultural Goal: Wealth and material success

 Approved Means Blocked: Education, legal employment
 Innovative Means: Selling counterfeit goods (unaccepted
method)
 Type of Adaptation (Merton): Innovation

3. Ritualism occurs when an individual continues to do things as

prescribed by society but forfeits the achievement of the goals.

✅ Example Scenario: Ritualism

Scenario:
Mr. Santos works as a government clerk. Every day, he follows the
office rules strictly: he arrives on time, fills out all the paperwork
correctly, and never breaks any regulation.

However, over the years, he has lost any real ambition for
promotion, success, or a higher income. He no longer believes he
will achieve the societal goal of “financial success” or upward
mobility — but he still goes through the motions of doing his job
properly, just because it’s what is expected of him.

🔍 Explanation:

 Cultural Goal Rejected: He has given up on achieving

financial success or upward mobility.
 Institutional Means Accepted: He strictly follows rules
and routines.
 Type of Adaptation: Ritualism

Ritualists abandon the societal goals but continue to conform to

the accepted means — following the rules without aiming for the

success those rules were meant to achieve.

4. Retreatism is the rejection of both the means and the goals of

society.

✅ Example Scenario: Retreatism

Scenario:
Ana used to be a hardworking student with dreams of becoming a
teacher. However, after facing repeated failures, family problems,
and lack of support, she gradually gave up on her goals. She
stopped attending school, lost interest in finding a job, and began
using illegal drugs to cope with her situation.

She no longer tries to succeed or follow society’s expectations —

instead, she chooses to detach herself from both the goals and the
means of achieving them.

🔍 Explanation:

 Cultural Goal Rejected: She no longer strives for success

or a meaningful career.
 Institutional Means Rejected: She quits school and avoids
employment or legal effort.
 Type of Adaptation: Retreatism

Retreatists "drop out" of society’s system — they neither aim for

success nor use accepted methods to achieve it.

5. Rebellion is a combination of the rejection of societal goals and

means and a substitution of other goals and means

✅ Example Scenario: Rebellion

Scenario:
Carlos grew up in a poor farming community and was taught that
success meant getting a college degree and landing a high-paying
office job. But over time, he became disillusioned with this system
— he saw it as corrupt and unfair, favoring the rich and powerful.

Carlos dropped out of college and joined a grassroots activist group

that promotes indigenous ways of living, self-sufficiency, and
communal land ownership. Instead of chasing wealth, he now
advocates for equality, sustainable farming, and the rejection of
capitalist goals.

🔍 Explanation:

 Cultural Goals Rejected: Wealth, social mobility, and

material success
 Means Rejected: Formal education, corporate jobs,
capitalist systems
 New Goals Substituted: Equality, social justice,
sustainable living
 New Means Substituted: Activism, alternative education,
communal work
 Type of Adaptation: Rebellion

Rebels don’t just withdraw — they actively seek to change the

system by promoting alternative visions of society.

V. Culminating
Activities

answering the question.
2. After answering each question, the team must decide to
either KEEP THE BOX or GIVE THE BOX to the
other team.
