Ch.25-27 Essays

In the 1920's to 1930's, the United States was barely able to adopt an isolationist policy. This inability to devote to isolationism is illustrated through the United States' abatement of immigration. After the great depression, The U.S still heavily depended on European trade.

Essay 1- Isolationism As a country separated from the rest of the major super powers of the world, isolationism in geographical

terms was almost effortless for the United States in the early 19th century. However, from a sociopolitical standpoint, achieving isolation was a strenuous task which contributed to fact that in the 1920s to 1930s, the United States was barely able to adopt an isolationist policy because of how intertwined the country was with foreign affairs. This inability to devote to isolationism is illustrated through the United States abatement of immigration, trade in the aftermath of the Great Depression, and the years ensuing World War I. Immigration MX- Americans were forced to leave by officials who removed them or by relief programs that excluded them, but instead of leaving, they migrated to cities like Los Angeles or became migrant farm workers Chinese-Americans, like MX Americans, were given lowest paying jobs, if any, working in laundries and restaurants below entry level, yet they stayed Japanese Americans mostly worked at fruit stands, even college educated Japs After Depression Roosevelt let the issue of war debts that Hoover fought so hard for, simply die. By doing this, Roosevelt hoped to sever the connections and dependence on Europe that cause the Great Depression, but the U.S still heavily depended on Europe economically U.S dependency on European trade was too strong. The U.S could not afford to sever its trade ties with Europe because the economy would collapse leaving us with an inseverable connection with Europe that would prevent complete isolation U.S exports to Europe were still heavily depended on, and tariffs were even adjusted in order to increase exports The U.S had not recognized the Soviet Regime since the Bolshevik Revolution and had hostilities with the nation showing isolationism, but economists showed that trade could be set up by the Soviets Good Neighbor Policy- No state has the right to intervene in the internal or external affairs of another. Further isolated America, however boosted economic influences in Latin America Years after WWI before WWII Neutrality Acts- designed to prevent a recurrence of events that pressured the U.S into WWI by establishing an arms embargo against both side in a conflict; however, Roosevelt got a revision allowing arms to be bought on cash-carry basis Later, Roos. Completely circumvented Netrality Acts, selling England 50 destroyer ships and planes When Brits went bankrupt, Roos. Began directly funneling weapons to Brits Though isolated, there was no preventing sympathies toward British & French When Japs bombed Pearl Harbor, all isolationist attempts went out the window

Essay 2- Roosevelt Caused the War Scarred from the effects of World War I, isolationists were determined to keep the United States out of the aggressive scene forming in Europe. President Roosevelt had other ideas which he managed to manifest making him responsible for the United States entry into World War 2. Roosevelt became responsible through his violation of the Neutrality Acts, his provocations of the Germans and Japanese, and his co-creation of the Atlantic Charter. Violated Neutrality Acts Roosevelt directly went against the Neutrality Acts and began selling destroyers and planes to the Brits. - Lend Lease Roos. Suggested this as a way to erase the dollar sign from all arms transactions by funneling weapons to Britain based on the promise that they would pay the U.S back when the war was over He later extended lend-lease privileges to the Soviets too Provoked Germans By providing lend-lease, this was already provoking the Germans However, it was blatant when Roos. Began providing lend-lease to Soviet Union The navy began escorting goods for the British and telling Brit when German subs were near; the Germans noticed this too The German U-Boat fired on Greer, the American Destroyer; Ross, responded by saying to fire on German subs on sight When Germans sank Reuben James, an enraged Congress allowed US Navy to sail all the way into belligerent ports further provoking Germans Roos. Knew that in order to get uniform support of war, there would have to be incident that would rally the country for the war effort Roos. Purposely sent U.S navy as escort for Brit armaments to provoke Germans Created Atlantic Charter & Devised Plan Roosevelt and Churchill sent their two senior military officrs to devise a plan were the U.S to join the war Roos. Was ready and itching to join the war; he just had to wait for the incident that would bring Americans together and unite them for the war effort Roos. Met with Churchill. He made no military commitments so as not to set off isolationists, but he did release the Atlantic Charter Atlantic Charter: Brit and U.S set out common principles on which to base a better future, trying to convince others of the benefits of war on the future Provoked Japan Roos. denounced Japanese policies by denouncing their attack on China Roos. Established a trade embargo banning essential supplies like oil to Japan Roos made it clear that he would not restore trade until Japanese withdrew from China, and he knew they wouldnt, so Roos was actually directly provoking war
