Note On The Brain Functions

The brain is responsible for controlling all body functions, including survival, thoughts, and emotions. Key parts include the cerebrum for higher functions, cerebellum for balance, brainstem for vital functions, limbic system for emotions and memory, thalamus as a relay center, and pituitary gland for hormone control. Each brain region has specific roles, such as decision-making in the frontal lobe and sensory processing in the parietal lobe.

🧠 Brain Functions

The brain controls every aspect of the human body—from basic

survival functions to complex thoughts and emotions.

🔹 1. Cerebrum – Higher Brain Functions

 Left Hemisphere: Logic, language, analytical thinking, math
 Right Hemisphere: Creativity, intuition, art, spatial ability
Functions by Lobes:
 Frontal Lobe:
o Decision-making
o Problem-solving
o Voluntary movement
o Personality & emotions
o Speech (Broca’s area)
 Parietal Lobe:
o Sensory processing (touch, temperature, pain)
o Spatial awareness
o Coordination of movements
 Temporal Lobe:
o Hearing
o Memory (hippocampus)
o Language comprehension (Wernicke’s area)
 Occipital Lobe:
o Vision and visual processing

🔹 2. Cerebellum – Balance and Coordination

 Controls fine motor movements
 Maintains posture and balance
 Coordinates voluntary movements (e.g. walking, writing)

🔹 3. Brainstem – Vital Body Functions

 Medulla Oblongata: Breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure
 Pons: Sleep, facial expressions, taste
 Midbrain: Reflexes, eye movement, auditory & visual
processing

🔹 4. Limbic System – Emotions and Memory

 Amygdala: Processes emotions (fear, pleasure)
 Hippocampus: Forms and retrieves memories
 Hypothalamus: Regulates hunger, thirst, sleep, hormones,
body temperature

🔹 5. Thalamus – Relay Center

 Directs sensory information to the correct part of the brain
for processing

🔹 6. Pituitary Gland – Hormone Control

 Master gland of the endocrine system
 Controls growth, metabolism, and reproductive hormones
