Hardware Replacement Guide

Overview
This guide is intended to be used by customers who are replacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are replacing Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). In this document, CRUs and FRUs will be referred to as parts. This guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables, switches, and certain mechanical parts can be replaced by trained service personnel without the need for step-by-step procedures. This guide contains instructions for replacing the following parts: v v v v v v v v v v v Power supply System board Microprocessor Hard disk drive Diskette drive Optical drive Memory modules Adapter card Internal speaker Keyboard Mouse

Safety information for replacing CRUs

Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the Important safety information in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer. To obtain a copy of the Quick Reference, go to the World Wide Web at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=part-video.

Safety information for replacing FRUs

Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the Important safety information in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM). To obtain a copy of the HMM, go to the World Wide Web at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=part-video.

Additional information resources

If you have Internet access, the most up-to-date information for your computer is available from the World Wide Web. You can find the following information: v CRU removal and installation instructions v Publications v Troubleshooting information v Parts information v Downloads and drivers v Links to other useful sources of information

Tools required
To replace some parts in your computer, you might need a flat-blade or Phillips screwdriver.

Handling static-sensitive devices

Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts. When replacing a part, do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part. When you handle parts and other computer components, take these precautions to avoid static-electricity damage: v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you. v Always handle parts and other computer components carefully. Handle adapters, memory modules, system boards, and microprocessors by the edges. Never touch any exposed circuitry. v Prevent others from touching the parts and other computer components. v Before you replace a new part, touch the static-protective package containing the part to a metal expansion-slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the computer for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity in the package and your body. v When possible, remove the new part from the static-protective packaging and install it directly in the computer without setting the part down. When this is not possible, place the static-protective package that the part came in on a smooth, level surface and place the part on it. v Do not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface.

Replacing the microprocessor

Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading the Important safety information in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM). To obtain copies of the Quick Reference or HMM, go to http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=part-video.

When you receive a new microprocessor, you will also receive a new heat sink and vacuum pen. You must use the new heat sink with the new microprocessor. If you use the old heat sink with the new microprocessor, your computer might over heat and could cause intermittent problems.

Important Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the microprocessor. Use the vacuum pen provided to remove and install the microprocessor. If you must touch the microprocessor, touch only the sides. This section provides instructions on how to replace the microprocessor.

Important Leave your computer turned off for at least one hour before removing the microprocessor to allow the thermal interface between the microprocessor and the heat sink time to cool down. 1. Remove the computer cover. See Removing the cover on page 5. 2. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward to gain access to the system board.

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware

11

3. Remove the heat sink 2 from the system board by pivoting the lever 1 securing the heat sink until it is fully in the up position. Carefully lift the heat sink off of the system board. Note: If you are only replacing the system board, place the heat sink on its side on a clean, flat surface so the thermal interface on the bottom of the heat sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated.

4. Release the lever 2 securing the microprocessor 1 then pivot the microprocessor retainer 3 until it is fully in the open position.

12

Hardware Replacement Guide

5. Remove the microprocessor from the system board socket using the vacuum pen 1 .

Important Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the microprocessor. If you must touch the microprocessor, touch only the sides.

Notes: a. Take notice of the orientation of the notches 1 on the microprocessor. This is important when reinstalling the microprocessor on the system board.

b. Do not drop anything on the socket while it is open. Keep all contacts as clean as possible. 6. Make sure that the lever on the microprocessor retainer is fully in the up position.

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware

13

7. When installing the new microprocessor 2 , loosen the black cover 3 that protects the gold contacts on the microprocessor, but do not remove it. Use the vacuum pen 1 to pick up the new microprocessor then completely remove the black cover. Place the black cover on the old microprocessor.

8. Position the microprocessor so that the notches on the microprocessor are aligned with the tabs in the microprocessor socket.

Important To avoid damaging the microprocessor contacts, do not tilt the microprocessor when installing it into the socket. 9. Use the vacuum pen 1 to lower the microprocessor straight down into the system board socket.

14

Hardware Replacement Guide

10. Lower the microprocessor retainer 3 and then lower the lever 2 to secure the retainer. Make sure the lever is securely locked into position.

Note: If you are replacing the system board, there will be a black plastic cover on the microprocessor retainer to protect the socket. When you lock the microprocessor in position, remove the cover. Place the black cover on the microprocessor retainer of the failing system board. 11. Place the new heat sink 2 into position and lower the lever 1 to secure the heat sink. Note: If you are only replacing a system board, install and secure the original heat sink on the microprocessor.

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware

15

12. If you are replacing the system board, continue at Replacing the system board at step 9 on page 10. If you are replacing the microprocessor, continue at the next step. 13. Go to Completing the parts replacement on page 25.
