My warmest greetings to our beloved and ever adoring principal, Mrs. Minda R.
Castanares, to our strenuous and multitalented teachers, spectators, parents, students, ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant afternoon to all. Before there was a United Nations, there was an international organization called the League of Nations. The League of Nations broke up after they were unable to prevent World War II. On January 1, 1942, in the middle of World War II, representatives from 26 nations signed the Declaration by United Nations, which was an agreement to fight together against the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan). The name United Nations was thought up by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Not long after that, there was a United Nations conference in San Francisco. Representatives from 50 countries got together and signed the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. Even more countries signed the charter later on. The purpose of the UN is to "preserve peace, advance justice and constitute a permanent structure for international cooperation." In other words, the United Nations acts as a world forum to help countries work together to achieve peace and human rights. Some towns celebrate by holding public rallies with speakers who share what the UN has accomplished. Some towns have festivals with music and dancing. No celebration would be complete without a huge banquet with tons of food from different countries. Like what we have witnessed earlier is our own way of celebrating the United Nations Day. Without much ado, I would like to extend my profound gratitude to the ARAL PAN and MAPEh advisers who initiated the preparation for the success of this activity. I am also thankful for the support and empathy of our school head together with the faculty and staff who have made it possible for the celebration to become a reality. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for their untiring support. Most importantly, I would like to express a million thanks to our Almighty God who continually share and shower his graces to us. To make this message short, let me share some closing thoughts from our UN Leader Secretary General Kofi Annan who says, I believe that our world needs an instrument of global action as never before in history. I believe that the United Nations is the instrument for securing peace and for giving people everywhere, in poorer countries as in richer, a real stake in that peace by promoting development and encouraging cooperation. But the United Nations is only an instrument, an actor in need of props and cues from its directors, And so I will paraphrase Winston Churchill: Give us the toolsthe trust, the authority and the meansand we will do the job." So my fellow Filipinos, let us build better relationships for this is the ultimate recipe for a community development dish. Thank you, and God bless us all. Safe travels home. Once again, Happy UN Day to all of us.
