The countrys most iconic summer festival is
no more. Weve known that for months. 2012
was the last year that New Zealand would be
graced with the Big Day Out, and were yet to
see how the summer will play out without the
mainstay of international and local acts that
would usually be rocking out.
Will another festival take its place? Will
Laneway be the new favourite festival? Will
Rhythm & Vines or its southern counterpart
Rhythm & Alps draw in bigger crowds than
ever? Will the smaller festivals around the
country start seeing more people travel and
make a road trip out of their summer? Or will
the acts that are playing at the Australian Big
Day Out just make their way over here for
separate gigs?
The Big Day Out line-up announcement
always brought news of a multitude of
different bands making their way down
under. As a nation of moaners, some years
we would call the festival too indie, while
some years it would be too stadium rock.
Now that its gone, its too bad. Next year,
the Aussies have indie and mainstream
darlings from all around the world playing at
the BDO: Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers,
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, Band of
Horses, Kaskade, Animal Collective, Sleigh
Bells, Foals, Crystal Castles, OFF!, Against Me!,
Childish Gambino and Jeff the Brotherhood
to name just a few.
Many concertgoers will be buying their
tickets to one of the fve Aussie shows
already, which is understandable.
But were posing the question concerning
what New Zealand will do with this gap
in the market, and it seems that its being
flled with international headliners over
the course of a few months instead of one
day of 45-minute sets. Monday saw the
announcement that Kiedis and co. will be

bringing the Chilis to New Zealand in January,
with support from Off!. Both of those bands
are at the Aussie BDO. It seems as though the
line-up of our now-defunct festival is taking
the Soundwave route, where some bands
will hop across the ditch to play for Kiwi
audiences. And while thats a nice interim fx
for the lack of mid-January mega-festival, its
not nice on the wallet.
In November alone weve got Radiohead,
The Black Keys, Ben Harper, Grizzly Bear,
Coldplay and Mumford & Sons. In the winter
months were lucky enough to see many of
our local bands tour the country, but theres
no scratch for that international itch. Come
summer 2013, were going to have to pick
wisely, as its guaranteed that well be getting
more international acts coming our way,
whether theyre mega stars like RHCP or alt
favourites like Thee Oh Seas and Guitar Wolf
who rocked the country last summer.
On that note, isnt it about time Ty Segall

Some two years in the making and weve fnally got
a new Collapsing Cities album. The frst single off the
album debuted online several weeks ago, and fans
have been excited about the album release show this
week to see how the four-piece bring the impressive
sophomore album Strangers to the live fray. Clap Clap
Riot and Beach Pigs will play support.
Following their number one chart debut, the
countrys favourite underground rappers have
made it to the big time. They know how to throw a
successful 48 hour album release party in the most
disorderly of ways and how to run a pop-up store for
a week, so now theyre having a crack at taking the
party on the road with a seven-piece band.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble make their frst return to NZ
since their jaw-dropping Womad performance in 2010.

eight-piece brass ensemble bring their acclaimed live
performance to Wellington this Friday and Aucklands
Powerstation on Saturday.
Hey Christchurch rock kids, how about a nice special

You could never accuse
the Flaming Lips of being
mundane its just not in
their repertoire. So what
happens when youve done it
all musically, broken all the
rules, taken all the drugs? Well,
you get a few new friends
together and do it all again...
but just you make it just that
little bit more extreme.
And when I say new friends,
how about bringing in a party
princess like Ke$ha to mess
with the too-cool-for-school
kids? Not a bad way to kick-start
this excellently tripped-out and
fucked-up foray. Ke$ha opens
Heady Fwends with a cheery
middle fnger raised skyward
(but aimed directly at her haters)
as she proves that shes more
than just a pop machine to be
used for mass consumption. On
2012, her ballsy vocal styling
melds effortlessly with the
Lips anarchic sound, creating a
piece of electronica that smacks
considerable ass.
Speaking of pop machines,
how about the woman who
broke up one of the greatest
pop products of all time? Oh yes,
Yoko Ono makes an appearance
on Do It sounding like a mad
mixture of 60s art rock and
70s funk, all the while adding
more fuel to Heady Fwends
experimental fre. To go with
the left-of-feld choices, there
are also some less controversial
heavy-weight guest
appearances from the likes of
Biz Markie, Erykah Bardu and
a scary-sounding Nick Cave
(amongst others). All help to
build a considerable rep for this
collaborative effort.
But with the Lips it isnt
about their rep Its about
pushing the envelope and
having a grand ol time while
doing it. On the fip-side,
collaborative albums like this
can often let the guests take
over. But each track on Heady
Fwends is indelibly a part of
Flaming Lips canon. Their
signature eclecticism catches
each collaborative artist in its
maelstrom, sucking them in
and spitting them out, sticky
with a coating of chaos-candy
that only the Lips can provide.
This album sure wont please
those looking for a linear listen,
but its a fun ride if you let
yourself go and just enjoy it.

Auckland eatre Companys landmark production of
Bruce Masons profoundly human masterpiece
What is more honourable: the truth that hurts, or the lie that heals?
im no Family Guy fan, siding (like
the writers of The Simpsons did)
with Trey Parker and Matt Stone
when South Park painted the
show as a collection of random
gags assembled by manatees.
Seth MacFarlane the shows
creator, writer and voice actor has
nevertheless made a solid frst
foray into flmmaking, a format that
perhaps by its very nature restricts
the tangents his imagination is
able to take, and Ted beats the early
efforts of Parker and Stone. Thats
not to paint this as anything other
than a very silly flm though, with the
animated foul-mouthed pot-smoking
teddy bear of the title barely given
the most cursory explanation for its
existence and Mark Wahlberg doing
what he does best, ultra deadpan
dullard comedy (as seen to great
effect in The Other Guys and more
accidentally in The Happening).
Theres still space for brief fights
of fancy, with celebrity cameos
and the odd fantasy sequence
reminiscent of Family Guy (as is the
banter in Ted), but MacFarlane shows
a good grasp of the flm medium
by keeping things pretty simple.
That includes the plot, which is
both paint-by-numbers and tepidly
misogynist, focusing on Wahlbergs
character John and his refusal to
grow beyond a stoner man-child
even at the nagging behest of his
girlfriend (Mila Kunis). While it aint a
great flm for these reasons (as well
as its pacing and resolution), Ted is
great viewing packed full of laughs
and boasts great creepy supporting
performances from Joel McHale and
Giovanni Ribisi.

Of the wider Judd Apatow-directed flms including
The 40 Year Old Virgin, Funny People and the Apatow
produced ficks such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall,
Superbad and Pineapple Express, Knocked Up was
the one that brought the comedy clique of Seth
Rogen, Jason Segall, Martin Starr and Paul Rudd into
the mainstream comedy fray. Its a dude classic for
him and her.
Cruel Intentions was one of the original 90s teenage
sex dramas. If thats a thing. Ryan Phillipe, Sarah
Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair all
found their tinseltown footing from this teenage soft-
core sex and romance romp that was a cult classic for
anyone in their teens.

Hot damn, its arrived. The fnal of Christopher Nolans
Batman trilogy has fnally come our way. Anticipations
are high and the blogoshpere is rife with expectations.
Can the third flm close the chapter on Batman in a
satisfactory way? Bat icons Bane and Catwoman make
their frst appearance in Chris Nolans universe in
the closing tale, inspired by none other than Charles
Dickens A Tale of Two Cities.

Zooey Deschanels TV show grew on us as the season
went on. Yeah, the marketing for it was ridiculous and
adorkable is a fucking stupid word. But the cast is
solid and once you get over the hump of geek-chic
quirk-is-cool writing, you can get to enjoying the
actual show. This Tuesday sees the show start back
from episode one if youre interested in catching up.

go on record and say that its one of the funniest

Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari and more.

DINING AND ShIT EAt
Chicks dig bad boys. Bad boys and scars. And guys dig naughty things.
In Japanese, wagamama means naughty child. So if youre a bit of a
nerd, trying to impress that bad boy or naughty girl, take them out
to Wagamama for a bite or two. Even better, heres some scintillating
dinner conversation so you wont be lost for words: Did you know
that a child said to be wagamama demands constant attention?
Thats so Gen Y, right; Wagamama was launched in 1992. So were
Taylor Lautner, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus.; Youre really hot. Like
this meal Im eating. Sorry, was that too forward? Do you want me to
be backwards instead? Nailed it.
A couple of Saturdays ago it was date day. We call it Terrifc Lady Day,
because it has a nice ring to it and the lady feels terrifc when you give
her a whole day named after her. We went to the Parnell markets in the
morning to see if I could steal some free food from my Italian friend
who works there. He wasnt there, but the people from Whoopie were.
They make cake pies that look like melting moments, and eating one
of these things is like making out with an angel. It was terrifc. I cant
remember the name of the guy, but he said they have a store in Grey
Lynn and a snazzy website where you can see all of the super pretty
Whoopie pies and cake-esque loollipops called Whoopie pops as well.

The Dark knighT FLIPPED AuDIEnCE ExPECTATIOn OF WHAT
A SuPERHERO MOVIE CAn BE. CAn CHRISTOPHER nOLAn DO IT
AGAIn WITH HIS FInAL EnTRY InTO THE BATMAn WORLD WITH
The Dark knighT rises?
The year is 2008. Christopher Nolans movie The Dark Knight just
blew the minds of audiences across the world, seamlessly declaring
that there is now a difference between a good comic book movie and
a good movie. Batfans have never been prouder. Comic book geeks
probably get a good week or two of impressing girls. The world
wonders how any Batman flm could possibly top what they just saw
a magnifcent combination of acting, direction, special effects, writing
and score composition in flm-making.
Fast-forward four years, and were about to get our answer.
The press screenings have begun and theyre off to a fantastic start. The
Dark Knight Rises is being called pure geek happiness. and some of us
are doing our best as not to stumble across any spoilers. Dont worry,
reader thats not whats happening here. all were doing is buying the
hype like its a chocolate-coated winning lotto ticket with a genie inside
that gives us psychic investment advice.
Director, writer and producer Christopher Nolan says that the story
of TDKR is set eight years after the second flm in his Batman trilogy.
it seems that Batman and Commissioner Gordon have succeeded.
The Dark Knight is no longer needed in Gotham. in that regard, Bruce
Wayne has won the battle, but he is traumatised by what happened and
doesnt know how to move on from being the fgure of Batman.
his fnal installment in the Bat-realm, TDKR deals with the
consequences of his and other characters actions in the previous flms.
With so much hype to follow up on, speculation has been rife about
whether or not this flm can be as good, or better than, its predecessor.
We felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to fulfll expectations based
on the frst two movies while giving the audience something they hadnt
seen before. it was a tricky balance. The action has to be huge, but the
story has to be even bigger. Not to mention the answer to where we see
our hero wind up when all of this is said and done. its a trilogy, after all,
and Batmans legacy is not one full of happiness.
Our guiding impulse in this telling of the Batman legend has always
been to follow Bruce Waynes journey, Nolan says. in Batman Begins
you see the tragedy and the pain that motivates this angry young man,
who feels useless and is searching for a path, and who wants to fnd out
who he is and what he can become. in The Dark Knight, hes discovered
that path. he is useful; he is doing what he imagines is the best thing for
him to be doing in his life. Now, we are eight years on and he has lost the
one thing that gave him a purpose until he is forced to deal with a new
threat to the city and to himself.
One of the most loved aspects of The Dark Knight was, of course, heath
Ledgers Joker. That performance of the now-deceased actors is possibly
his most well-known in his career, and often thought of as his best ever.
so how do you top that?
in deciding on who the next villain would be, it was imperative that
it was someone completely different from the Joker that he be a brute
force. The physical component of what Bruce Wayne does as Batman is
of extraordinary importance, and we had not truly challenged that in the
frst two flms. i really wanted to see Batman meet his match physically,
as well as intellectually. Bane is raw strength with a fanatical devotion to
duty, and that combination makes him unstoppable.
The upcoming flm welcomes many new faces to the world of Gotham.
Nolans co-conspirators Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom hardy and Marion
Cottilard join Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan
Freeman in the cast, as well as Nolan-newcomer anne hathaway,
who has been receiving a fair bit of grief on the blogosphere. sure, she
looks very white money, but sometimes you have to have faith in the
directors choice. Who, after all, could have ever imagined a comic-book
flm being so well loved?
We needed to fnd the balance between the classic image of the character
and a believable person you care about, Nolan explains. Casting anne
hathaway in the role was the key to that. she was able to combine those
facets seamlessly so they arent in confict, but one is amplifying the other.
The popularity of The Dark Knight was so impressive for more reasons
than just the actors. Composer hans Zimmer is back for the score
and Nolans production team have directed the batshit out of the
photography. Nolan is adamant that seeing the flm in an iMaX cinema
aids the storytelling, as nearly half of the movie was shot with large-
format cameras. We got great results with the iMaX cameras on the
last flm. i appreciate what it offers from the technical side, but im most
interested in what it can give me as a storytelling tool. how can it help me
pull the audience deeper into this world? iMaX provides the broadest
possible canvas, creating the most immersive experience.
Batman the character is one that is loved by many. Batman the flm
franchise is one that has had its ups and downs (Bat nipples, anyone?).
Christopher Nolans Batman is a complex story that has spanned a
decade, telling a story that has made the directors career. and he knows
it. When you look back on the flms, you can see the world were living
in refected. What gives us fear? What gives us hope? What would
require a hero of Batmans stature to rise up in our world? Nolan says.
Bruce Waynes story has fascinated people for more than 70 years
because its a great story We are very proud of this ending, and we hope
the audience shares our excitement.

MaTT harveys yOur typical kind of Kiwi guy. hes down-to-earth,
upfront, honest and not afraid to speak his mind. But living in vienna
for the last three or so years certainly shows and hes come a long way
in 14 years of Concord Dawn. his is latest album, Air Chrysalis, defnitely
shows the infuence of european culture.
Based on a book within a book of Japanese author haruki Murakamis
best-selling novel 1Q84, the album is more than just electronic beats and
drums its a metaphysical journey, a thinking mans drum and bass,
refecting Matts wider philosophy that to make great music, you have to
look outside yourself.
i didnt want to call it Bass Monsters Volume 6 or some cheesy shit, Matt
says matter-of-factly. i think it is good to have this relationship between
art, music and literature. When you live in vienna, you get out and see
things, talk about things and absorb a lot.
Thats how music used to be, like back in the 1970s artists, musicians
and writers were all dropping acid together, inspiring each other. i think
thats sort of lost these days. Music has become a bit insular, looking
inward, not taking inspiration from the outside.
The sixth studio album is not so much a new style, but an evolution of
the classic Concord Dawn sound. although this is the direction he has
always taken, crossing genre boundaries, Matt admits now hes a one-
man band (after the sudden departure of co-DJ evan short in 2009) he
has the confdence to take it in a new direction.
it was a hard thing to get out of the system, Matt says. With The Enemy
Within, it was the frst time i was doing the process by myself, but this
time it was a lot easier. When you write tunes, its like cooking. you have
a few ingredients, and then you taste it and think this could use this or
that. With an album, you think, i havent done a track like this, or this
could be a bit harder, so you play with it.
in a round-about sense, the new direction is also a return to proper
drum and bass, a time Matt says didnt involve the excessive use of
auto-tune and the explosion of a little genre called dubstep. as an ode to
this, he released Air Chrysalis free online one of many reasons being to
move away from the commercial aspect and get back to the real sound,
unpolluted by all the rest.
a lot of people have supported me over the years so i thought, why not?
it would be nice to give back. i have a studio of vintage equipment and
i have enough clothes not to do washing for a week. To remove money
from that process, i hoped to make something a bit truer. There is too
much of that shit in modern music. Guys are too photoshopped or they
have their name in six-foot lights behind them.
We have moved into this place where DJs have become caricatures, a
kind of superhuman God-DJ-Mystro man. im just an ordinary guy that
loves to make drum and bass.

This is where i should probably apologise to Laura or whoever, the
lady at the end of the wrong number called frst. When i fgured out
the right number scott had just woken, hung over not from a Tuesday
night bender but a writing late-nighter. The frst noticeable thing was his
normality; a theme reiterated throughout the interview and, of course, in
his music.
No pretentious musician bloated with cash and fame on the end of the
line. he says it feels good to be famous though. its good when people
come up to you and they relate to your music. But it has its drawbacks
too. Other times it feels kind of pointless, he says, referring to people
who come up pretending to know him, just wanting an autograph. They
remind me of people who take pictures of lions.
The upcoming tour is noticeably different to previous excursion The
Good Country Tour. its a fy-by visit to the big cities, skipping out the
obscure touring towns like Gore and Ohakune. asked why, scott says
its because they got someone else to organise it this time. he prefers the
road-trip style of the last one, but is still looking forward to it. The big
difference is going to be playing to more than 12 people.
san Fran Bath house is scotts pick of venue. its full of madness. im
pretty sure Wellington has no police force either, he adds about the
nightlife. he feels remotely uneasy about the inclusion of new material,
expecting a few hecklers requesting Bad, Bad Whisky. The standards
are high; he wants to give the crowd something interesting to vibe to. so
he really wants to try out the personal songs. Theres an art to it, he
says, aware that crowds dont always get on board with material that isnt
wrapped in bass.
although theyve been on the block for a while, home Brew have only
just added an album to their repertoire of ePs. its been a lifelong dream
for scott to get an album out. Growing up i always bought albums, he

reminisces. he even lets slip that santa Clause was the generous donor
of his frst album, Chris Cross debut. id sit in my room and listen to
them; theyre like works of art. Debut albums are particularly special
to him, because he fnds theyre often the tale of someones life. Finally
having his own album to represent him, scott hopes that he is able to
give that same good feeling he has felt to someone else and that hes got
some songs off of his chest.
Life without home Brew would mean that scott is just a dude who
works something he famously avoids. his career is hanging with
his mates, which he says is a great feeling. success for scott would be
being able to share his own experience with music, bringing things
down to a personal level and letting someone know that things are
going to be sweet.
its the most amazing thing in the whole world, he says about being able
to relate to a song. although scott wouldnt mind a Tui (NZMa gong)
he seems disgruntled by home Brews nomination for the 2012 aPra
silver scroll award. i was surprised by the politics of the silver scrolls.
you have to nominate yourself or the record label (has to)... which is
fucked. Me saying this has probably fucked our chances for an award.
Their hearts in the right place though who needs an award for that?

TheatrhythmFinalFantasyis a mixture of
dozens of animated sequences from thirteen
different FinalFantasy games, against which is
set a sublime music-matching rhythm game.
To play, you pick your four favourite Final
Fantasy characters (or just your favourite-looking
characters; their big-head variants here are very
cute) and head into the game. Theres also a nifty
RPG layer that wraps around the fun stuff, but you
dont need to worry about that to start with. Its
also unnecessary to know anything about Final
Fantasy in order to enjoy the experience.
The basic game is a mix of three types of rhythm
game, with a simple fourth mode thrown in from
time to time. In each, while the presentation
varies, the core concept does not; tap, swipe, and
slide according to the on-screen prompts, exactly
in time to the music. Keep doing this well and
youll proceed through the game; start to fail and
your characters will take damage. Take too much,
its game over.
There are a few different modes, including one
that lets you go through each of thirteen Final
Fantasy games in turn, tapping out tunes as you
go. If nothing else, this mode will make you fall in
love with the incredible music of the series; even
from the very frst (which came out 25 years ago),
the music is hauntingly beautiful.
Once youve cleared the series mode, there are
other much more diffcult modes to keep things
interesting. In them in addition to massive
challenge youll earn loads of XP and bonus
items, which help improve your capabilities in the
meta game.
The diffculty starts off at pretty seriously easy
and ramps up oh-so-gradually from there. With
no real spikes to speak of, the game is both
welcoming to less-experienced rhythm gamers
and rewarding to those who come hunting for
something hard.
It is, quite simply, a superbly polished game
that benefts to no small degree from having 25
years of amazing material to draw from. If youre
unfamiliar with Final Fantasy, dont be put off; the
music is gorgeous, and the gameplay mechanics
layered on top are great fun.

are doing more for summer which shade from
pink to orange. I have been really inspired by
colours in nature sunsets, coral and fower
petals.

If theres one thing thats a fashion faux-pas from
the designers end, its a lack of creativity. Ideas
that dont think outside the box; ones that steal
the box from someone elses box fort, making
said box fort emptier than a Kardashians skull
and fatter than Winona Ryders hair.
In essence, Clash is premium streetwear with an
edge. But we love more than just the essence.
We love the whole shebang. The whole getup.
The Whole Nine Yards, starring Matthew
Perry. Its got an intriguing and exciting line of
directional local and international mens and
womens fashion. Theyre all about challenges
and risk, stepping out from the bland shades of
normal, traditional boutiques and they fancy up
the plainest of Janes into Janes Addiction. The
Jane everyone wants. The Jane that experiments
and has fun with her fashion. Or his. I know a guy
called Jane, so shut up, it happens.
Clash is the exclusive stockist for Aussie
streetwear label Circle Park, which accents the
contemporary take on traditional garments.
They go for Melbourne street meets Bondi babe,
all about that bit of fair that helps the person
wearing it rock their own look with helpful
aesthetic hints. Nothing says cool and comfy like
someone looking and feeling good because they
know theyre the person wearing the clothes,
not the clothes on the person.

what are you working on right now?
Getting ready to promote our new album and play live! im also working
on a solo country album which i plan to release mid 2013. Our new
album has taken three years and is called Strangers Again most of
the lyrics are social observations, human conditions, subtext paranoia
and made-up stories. My favourite lyrics are always frst-person social
observations.
who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up?
it changed every week. Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Damon albarn (Blur)
as a teenager. as a child maybe steven seagal. Pretty much anybody
who made me laugh or wrote a really good pop song was my idol or
inspiration growing up. My older brother Paul was pretty inspirational;
hes very good at making up stories on the spot. single mothers are the
real heroes
when you were a kid what was your dream job?
it changed all the time. i remember wanting to a be a pro wrestler, then
the next week a writer, then maybe a chef and then maybe an actor and
then anything that involves travel.
whats your favourite venue in the country?
The Kings arms and Wunderbar in Lyttleton, really happy that its reopened.
where was the last place you went out for dinner?
My last dinner was down in Turangi i went down there for the
weekend with my girlfriend. i wish it was more romantic, but we had
Burger King. i had a chicken burger, a small fries and a hybrid Coke Zero
and raspberry drink. it was pretty average.
wheres the best place to get Eggs Benedict?
i heard your mum makes really good hollandaise! Probably Dizengoff,
though.
what has been the best show youve attented this year?
Die! Die! Die! album realease gig last Friday. i wish i had gotten a ticket
to radiohead i set my alarm but slept in. also, The Choads reformation
gig was fun!
what show are you most anticipating this year?
Collapsing Cities at the Kings arms, Friday July 20th, and Grizzly Bear.
