Seneca girls soccer is ready to
begin the preseason workouts to
prepare for the official start of
season. The team finished with a
record of 9-8-4 last season.
We had a good mix of seniors
and younger players last year. Im
hoping the younger players can
step up and fill in where the older
players left, said head coach Ron
Jensen.
The Lady Golden Eagles lost
one of their strongest players,
Shelby Lyon, who netted 13 goals
last season. According to Jensen,
he hopes her roll will be filled by
a variety of younger players.
The team lost a total of six
players to graduation, four of
which were starting players. One
of the graduates, Emily Auwarter
was a main component to the
team and anchored the defense.
She [Aurwarter] commanded
the defense, and we need someone
to fill those shoes, Jensen said.
Jensen didnt identify any true
up-and-coming star players this
season, but doesnt believe it will
be a problem this season.
There are a bunch of players
who played together in their club
team, and that always helps espe-
cially since theyre playing year
round, Jensen said.
Looking ahead, the loss of six
seniors can be dealt with. Seven

The project for the Indian Mills
Fire Company 9/11 Memorial is
pushing ahead with the help of
Steve Chepurny, president of
Beechwood Landscape Architec-
ture and Construction.
The company will be donating
their time through designing and
constructing the memorial.
Hes getting everything drawn
up with the total number of
pavers and shrubbery we need,
said Stanley Rowe, president of
the Indian Mills Fire Company.
Springers Brook Nursery will
be donating the plants and shrub-
bery. Anyone looing to donate
money or shrubbery can go
through [Springers Brook], said
Rowe.
The World Trade Center steel,
which is safely stored in Rowes
office, was obtained through the
Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey, with a final push
from Gov. Chris Christie.
The governor was involved,
and had a list of organizations
trying to get the steel He picked
Indian Mills Fire Company, and
he had the final hand in the
process. Rich Derose, an aide to
the governor, said he knew we
were looking to get the steel and
Gov. Christie finalized every-
thing, Rowe said.
The steel was originally sitting
in a hangar in John F. Kennedy
International Airport following
the cleanup of ground zero. The
pickup of the beam would have
originally cost the department an
extra $2 million on the insurance
to load and transport on a fire
truck.

starters are returning for the 2012
season.
Returning to the squad this
season is starting goalkeeper,
Taylor Donia. The then junior
made a total of 89 saves and was
able to start a majority of the
games. Senior goalie, Kelsey
OBrien will make a return as
well. Last season she blocked 29
total shots.
Were going to have a big con-
tingency of seniors and Im look-
ing for contributions from them.
If we can mix that with our
young talent, well be off to a good
start, said Jensen.
Jensen is hoping to contend
against Timber Creek, a team
they lost to twice and tied once
last season. The final game ver-
sus Timber Creek took place at
the NJSIAA quarterfinals. Fol-
lowing a penalty kick by Timber
Creek, they forced overtime and
the final score of 1-1. Jensen is
also looking to beat Bishop Eu-
stace and Paul VI, both teams
they were unable to beat in the
2011 season.
We have a lot of talent in the
younger grades, we have a lot of
sophomores and juniors coming
up. Im looking forward to seeing
how the younger players chal-
lenge for varsity spots, said
Jensen.

The steel is 110 pounds, which
is the maximum weight for UPS
deliveries, so we went through
UPS and had it delivered to the
firehouse for $78, missing the in-
surance cost, said Rowe.
The monument will not only
honor those who lost their lives in
the 9/11 attacks, but will include
the state policemen who lost their
lives in the line of duty in addi-
tion to fallen firemen and EMS in
the area.
We wanted to honor all fire-
man with a big plaque of all the
names and all the names of the
state police killed in the line of
duty, Rowe said. Were one of
the first, other than Trenton, to
have the names of the fallen offi-
cers from 1923 until present.
The construction isnt expected
to be a long project. Upon comple-
tion of previous obligations,
Beechwood will break ground
and begin the process of the me-
morial.
I dont think the project will
take more than a month once
they break ground, if that. They
work with pavers all the time,
Rowe said.

The fire company will still be collecting
donations to help take care of the house-
keeping of the site. They plan to move the
trees and the location of the firehouses
sign elsewhere to allow for construction of
the memorial.
The company is also planning to use the
remaining funds to add an LED sign to the
side of the building with leftover money
from the project.
If anybody would still like to donate,
they can. We want to use the leftover
money to buy an LED sign to post events,
especially since were in the middle of the
town, said Rowe. But only if we get
enough donations.

I
f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.
in our opinion
Out of the basement?
After years of declining prices, housing market looks to be headed up
Housing prices are up
Homeowners have been waiting for five
years or more for the news that was
released late last month: Housing
prices are inching up. Maybe the worst
of the housing storm has passed.

printed shorts helped Samaritan
spread the message loud and
clear that our expanded Family
of Services is here to serve all
who need us.
The Streep Family of Shamong
sponsored the Loud Pants Contest
to celebrate the life and memory
of John Streep, their beloved
hero, husband, father and
poppy. Streep, a golf enthusiast
and former Samaritan hospice
patient, supported Samaritan for
more than 10 years before losing
his battle to brain cancer in 2009.
During the evening reception, a
plaque was presented to the
Streep Family and trophies were
awarded to the two most vibrant-
ly dressed golfers: Bethanne
Ussery and Jim Maggioncalda.
We are so grateful for the
work of our golf committee,
chaired by Roy Fazio of The Pro-
tocall Group and Cliff Mancine of
Mancine Optical, said Mary Ann
Boccolini. The support of 85
sponsors and donors, 191 atten-
dees and more than 50 volunteers
means that Samaritan can say
yes to patients, families or
clients who seek our services
without regard to their ability to
pay.
