KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North Ward council on Monday to feature update on Terry Fox
Drive
The November Ward Council meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Program Room of the Kanata Seniors Centre in the Mlacak Centre, (2500 Campeau Drive). An update on the design and progress on constructing Terry Fox Drive will be provided. Plans will be available for viewing from 6:30 p.m. There will also be an update on the Richardson subdivision and plans for a child care facility in the Centrum. In the police report, I will follow up on actions taken following a vicious assault on a Kanata teenager on one of our pathways. The teen was returning home from his part-time job at Centrum (hes saving up for college) when he was attacked, his bicycle and back-pack stolen, and he was injured by being kicked repeatedly in the head. I would like to hear of means to make our pathways safer for all of us. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the Green Box program, receive an update on the 2010 city budget, answer questions on park and road construction and transit routes and review whats been happening in the City. All are welcome at Ward Council and so are your questions and comments.
Lansdowne Park
Lansdowne has dominated council business for the last few weeks. By now you should know what decision has been made to move forward. I will have submitted a motion on financial sharing on Monday and strongly support one on design from Peter Hume. If those passed, then I expect that council will have directed staff to move forward on more detailed studies for a final report on all aspects to go to council next May.
Green Boxes
The recent reports on having a special charge for recycling black, blue and green boxes was a committee recommendation that has not yet received council approval. I do not support the approach of the committee and many other councillors feel as I do. Once a decision has been made, Ill let you know the results.
Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM)
This week I will be attending meetings of FCM in Ottawa, including meeting with MPs on issues of concern to municipalities. One of these is the infrastructure
funding and timing to complete projects that will help the City obtain the full funding promised. There will also be discussion of the Green Fund and Canadas position on climate change and its impacts. I find the opportunity to discuss broad issues from representatives from across Canada very helpful in dealing with local issues and in finding alternative solutions to them.
Help end violence against women
On December 6, 20 years ago, 14 women all engineering students were massacred at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. This year, the volunteers of the Peer Support Program at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre will hold a candlelight ceremony (with A News journalist Sandra Blaikie as presenter), to honour them and all women who have fallen through senseless acts of violence. The ceremony starts at 5 p.m. on Dec. 6 in Hall D at the Mlacak Centre, 2500 Campeau Drive, Kanata, and will be followed by a reception.
