The developer has fenced off lands near the Beaver Pond in Kanata North in preparation for work, but has not yet received approval from the city to remove any trees. The developer has agreed to keep trails accessible across their lands until work begins. The city is working to obtain additional lands to maintain trail connections between the Beaver Pond and Trillium Woods. Environmental assessments for the Carp River were updated in 2006 and 2009 to incorporate public feedback and new information from flooding. Reports from these assessments and updates can be viewed online or at local libraries.

KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North

BEAVER POND LANDS

At the time of writing no approval has been given by the City to remove trees on the KNL lands North of the Beaver Pond. City staff are requiring that the developer fully meet the conditions relating to trees before any are removed and that has not yet happened. I will put a notice on the FaceBook Site and on my website as soon as I receive any further information. The developer has fenced their property with snow fencing in preparation for on-site work, when they are ready to begin. There are two sets of fencing. The one furthest from the Beaver Pond is located at the back of the development lands. The second one, closer to the Beaver Pond, is on the lands that the developer still owns but which will be deeded to the City when the subdivision is registered. The developer has agreed to keep openings where trails cross their lands until they obtain permission to work on the lands. City Council approved my motion for staff to negotiate obtaining land for a connection from the Beaver Pond to the trails in Trillium Woods and I am working to ensure that these additional lands are obtained so that the trail system can remain connected. I continue to support the community in searching for ways to save more of these lands.

CARP RIVER ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS

The Environmental Screening Report for the Carp River, Poole Creek and Feedmill Creek was completed in 2006. Due to concerns raised about the models used by the City, a freeze was placed on development while a Third Party Review was undertaken and updated documentation provided on water levels, flow monitoring and a detailed implementation plan on phasing and stormwater management. In addition to these updates the City has incorporated current conditions, as a result of the 2009 flooding, in an addendum to the Carp River Environmental Assessment (EA) Screening Report. These updates have now been issued for review together with supporting documentation and the River Restoration Project has been updated to incorporate the updates and directions received from City Staff and Council including a permanent widening of the Carp River corridor. This addendum along with the following supporting documentation: Carp River Restoration EA 2006, Third Party Review, March 2009, Kanata West Implementation Plan, July 2010, Updated Public Consultation Report, July 2010 and Carp River Restoration Plan Widening Alternatives Final Report by Greenland International Consulting Ltd., May 2010 can be viewed at local libraries including the Beaverbrook Library and at the Kanata Client Service Centre. For more information go to: http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/carp_river/index_en.html A request for additional environmental studies must be received by the Minister of the Environment prior to August 29, 2010, with copies to the City of Ottawa and Kanata West Owners Group. If no requests are received by August 29th the projects can proceed to design and construction. This is one of the requirements that will permit development to proceed in the Carp Valley lands.

THANK YOU TO OUTSIDE WORKERS

The extreme hot weather weve being having this month has been particularly difficult for people who work outdoors, both City workers and those working for businesses. Thank you to our hard working park maintainers, road construction workers, and others who spend their working day

outside. A special thank you to garbage collectors who are there in rain, snow, ice and extreme heat doing a difficult, yet essential, job for all of us. It is much appreciated.

SPEED LIMITS ON LOCAL ROADS

Residents who wish to have the speed limit on their street reduced to 40 km/h can now initiate the process themselves to reach that objective. The detailed process to request a speed limit reduction to 40 km/h is available at www.ottawa.ca/traffic. This requires having a consensus of 66% of residents on the entire street. Follow the steps on the website and let me know if you have any difficulties.
