PICC LINE MAINTENANCE

• NO BP ON PICC LINE ARM

• NEVER USE SYRINGE SMALLER THAN 10CC

• CHANGE DRESSING EVERY 7 DAYS AND PRN

• CHANGE CAP EVERY 3-7 DAYS DEPENDING ON FREQUENCY OF USE

• WHEN USING FOR BLOOD DRAWS, DISCARD FIRST 5CC OF BLOOD

• FLUSH WITH 20CC OF NS AFTER ALL BLOOD DRAWS

• FLUSH WITH 10CC OF NS AFTER EACH USE, OTHER THAN BLOOD

DRAWS

• FLUSH EACH PORT EVERY 12 HOURS IF USED INFREQUENTLY

• DOCUMENT ALL DRESSING CHANGES OR ANY MAINTENANCE

DONE TO CATHETER

• IF FLOW THRU CATHETER SEEMS TO BE SLOWING, TRY FLUSHING

CATHETER WITH 10CC NS USING A PULSING ACTION. THIS WILL
CAUSE A TURBULENCE WITHIN THE CATHETER AND HELP TO
CLEAN ANY RESIDUE WHICH MAY BE BUILDING UP INSIDE.

• USE ONLY ANTI-REFLUX VALVE CAPS WITH PICC LINES

• IF T-CAP IS NOT AVAILABLE, YOU MUST FLUSH WITH 3CC OF

HEPARIN FLUSH (10 UNITS/CC) USING A 10CC SYRINGE.

• DO NOT CLAMP PORTS—IT WILL CAUSE THE CATHETER TO CLOT
