Mentoring The mentoring partnership is a structured one-to-one, non-judgemental relationship in which an individual focuses on the needs of the mentored
participant or mentee. Mentoring is a valuable strategy which improves the performance of individual students, provides them with the emotional and instrumental support needed to achieve the goal of a college degree. It helps to meet the needs of high achievers so that they can achieve their full academic potential and develop skills which will enable them to adapt more easily to university and a successful career. By providing information, guidance, and encouragement, mentors can play an important role in nurturing students college aspirations, helping them prepare for college and advising them on how to make successful transitions from high school to their first year on campus. In addition, mentoring for students in college helps students to feel more connected and engaged on campus, which ultimately improves student outcomes. A mentor is an experienced individual that serves as a trusted counselor, loyal adviser and coach who helps and guides another individuals development. The mentor is a confidant who provides perspective, helps the candidate reflect on the competencies they are developing, and provides open, candid feedback. A mentor's knowledge, experience, encouragement and skills offer the student guidance and advice. Benefits from Mentoring Programs to both the Mentor and Mentee are many: For the Faculty: Gain personal satisfaction Develop patience, insight, and understanding May experience a cultural, social, or economic background different from their own Improve leadership and communication skills To the Student: Receive academic help Learn study skills Improve social skills Have the attention of another caring adult Discover new options and opportunities Set goals for the future Impact of Mentoring

Formal and Informal Mentoring Informal mentoring involves general guidance and support in helping a student learn something new. Formal mentoring involves a structured and intentional approach of offering those experiences and benefits similar to the ones provided by informal mentors. Class Counseling is a Formal Approach to mentoring Students in the University. Campus-based mentoring helps in students becoming self conscious, focused and committed good citizenship. CLASS COUNSELING Class counseling is for our students having common goals, problems and almost common experiences with same level of emotional and intellectual make up. Class counseling aims to provide empathy and support to the students and tries to help them to attain a mature state of mind. The class counselor has to assist the students in developing their existing skills to better deal with interpersonal relationships. Counseling helps students to feel better, think clearly, relate better with others, have less stress and eventually change behavior for a healthier adjustment to the environment. Role and duties of Class Counselor The class counselor has to become a mentor, guide and a friend of the student. The responsibility of the class counselor involves: building a partnership to provide guidance and positive perspectives needs to motivate students, encouraging them to meet challenges with confidence solving problems of the students at all levels including emotional, intellectual, academic/educational or administrative problems facilitating interaction among other students, helping them learn from one another assisting them in establishing personal goals providing continuous empathy and support to the students forming a relationship built on trust which requires a high level duty of care effected over a sustained period of time
The class counselors role will be to use love, affection, understanding and inquisitiveness by way of asking questions to comprehend the situation and find a solution to the students concern. A class counselor will have to apply both, individual counseling and group counseling to find the best way of engaging the class. One-to-One association is a caring, friendly and mutually accepting relationship and should not be a mere one-way advise-giving-situation forced on an individual. It will facilitate a useful means of making the student perceptive and accepting change in the environment. Group counseling helps to address common areas of counseling.
The class counseling programs requires planning in advance, commitment and enthusiasm from the faculty. The success of the mentoring plan is largely dependent on the class counselors abilities to: relate to the students motivate students listen well identify a student's hidden talents and skills communicate hope and optimism make time available set and maintain firm boundaries delegate responsibility to students to become more connected to the College maintain confidentiality and trust within appropriate limits
Qualities of a good class counselor
Professional conduct Effective mentoring relies on positive relationships that are developed in a professional manner. They can have a significant impact upon students educational progress, social and emotional welfare and behaviour and have the responsibility and authority to manage the situation. Students who are given extra help by a mentor often feel special and welcome the individual adult attention and sometimes may develop a feeling of attachment to the adult. This situation needs to be handled carefully, maintaining professional distance becomes extremely important to ensure the welfare of the student is safeguarded, and that the welfare and effectiveness of the mentor is not compromised.
Record Keeping It is vital for each faculty member to maintain up-to-date record file of the students they are counseling both on the software and a hard copy. Student Data Contact Details Attendance All communication between Guardian/Ward and the CC. Please document the communication. Compiled Marks after sessionals and Attendance Students leave applications Details of counseling and the feedback according to the Counseling Plan.
Feedback Discussion and opinion from mentors and students is critical to identify and resolve problems early. The counseling plan stresses the importance of the feedback given by the student so as to improve the system and increase its efficiency and effectiveness. The class counselors feedback is important to find students requiring special counseling sessions with experts. The feedback needs to be uploaded online after the counseling session within a day. Any good suggestions on improving the system by the student or faculty are valuable and highly appreciated. Conduct of Sessions Each session need to be divided into two parts. The first part may involve the faculty introducing the session topic in 20 min. followed by a discussion and feedback from the students. Session 13
Session 14
Session 1 Introduction of the students: Rather than a normal introduction from the students the class counselor can ask the following questions to build rapport and open communication. 1. Name 2. What is unique about you? 3. One craziest thing you have done? 4. Name two things you never leave your home without. 5. What is the Motto of your life? The class counselor needs to introduce themselves similarly. Session 2 Value and Know Yourself Motivating story If you are into financial investment, youre probably very familiar with Mr. Warren Buffet (1951present) (Company Name Berkshire Hathaway Inc). He is the most successful investor in the world. His investment strategies are legendary and many people seek to learn after him. Even more respectable, he pledged to give away 99% of his wealth (more than $30 billions at the time of the pledge in 2006) to non-profit foundations, mostly to Bill Gates Foundation. Mr. Buffet often travels to universities to give speeches to educate and motivate students. Here is one of his speeches to teach us the value of our body, to invest in ourselves, in education for a great future. Author: Warren Buffet Imagine that a Genie offers you any car in the world. The catch is that it is the only car you will ever own. What would you do? You would read the manual ten times, change the oil twice as often as required, and you would take fastidious care so that that car remained the car of your dreams forever. Think about what this tells you about your body. You get only one mind and one bodythe same ones you will have at 20, 40, 60, etc. Take care of them and maximize their potential. It will be too late to take care of your body and mind (and car) later on. You can maintain them, but it is hard or impossible to undo big mistakes or negligence later on. You do not want to end up with a wreck on your hands. Your main asset in life is yourself. Treat yourself as a valuable asset. I often explain to students that I would be willing to pay today for a percentage of the future earnings of good students. If you value yourself, and invest in yourself, you will be worth a great deal throughout your lifetime, both to yourself and to your community. The feedback has to be recorded on a hard copy and updated on the MIS of the College within 24 hour. Class counselor need to take special care that students do not indulge in any untoward activity which may jeopardize the student or collage interest in any way. Session 4 Positive Attitude Motivating story Thomas Edison tried two thousand different materials in search of a filament for the light bulb. When none worked satisfactorily, his assistant complained, All our work is in vain. We have learned nothing. Edison replied very confidently, Oh, we have come a long way and we have learned a lot. We know that there are two thousand elements which we cannot use to make a good light bulb.
Having and maintaining a positive attitude is vital for success in life and business. "It is your attitude, not your aptitude that determines your altitude." Sure you need skills, but you can learn skills - in fact a positive attitude will make it much more likely that you will learn the skills necessary to succeed. If you take two people with an equal skill set the person with the better attitude will win. Steps to build a positive attitude 1. Wake up Early One of the best ways to help you maintain a positive attitude is to create the habit of waking up early. Waking up early allows you to get a head start on the day. You can prepare for work and start your day without feeling rushed. You can get a head start on important projects before the rest of the world is awake to interrupt you. You can spend time reading or in prayer or meditation. 2. Read Positive and Inspiring Books One of the best ways to maintain a positive attitude is by reading positive books. These books serve to encourage you, inspire you, and teach you. Reading requires that you sit still and focus, and by focusing on something positive it helps you to keep a positive mindset throughout the day. 3. Exercise Very few things in life leverage your time as much as exercise. Obviously it makes a difference for your physical health, but it also has significant benefits to your mental health. Exercise is useful to combat depression and to improve overall positive mood. Further, if you exercise early in the morning you can go through your day knowing that you have already completed the most valuable activity you had to do! 4. Plan Your Week and Day Having a clear plan to your day and to your week can go a long way to helping you maintain a positive attitude. By knowing what you want to accomplish you will be able to focus on your important life priorities. A weekly plan allows you to match your long-term goals to your weekly accomplishments. Your daily plan allows you complete the activities you need to do so that you meet your weekly goals. 5. Understand that Things Won't Always Go as Planned If you plan and expect everything in life will go as you planned, you will be quickly disappointed. One of the keys to maintaining a positive attitude is to understand that things will go wrong. If you expect things to go wrong, you won't be phased when they do. So have a plan, but understand that things won't follow the plan. The plan allows you to adapt to what went wrong and move back towards what is important. 6. Be Thankful Take some time and be thankful. Be thankful about what you have, who you are, and what your life is like. Think through all of the things that you can be thankful for. Even if you are in a tough time in life there are many things you have that you can be thankful for. You need to look for them and recognize them. The very act of focusing on what you are thankful for will help you maintain your positive attitude 7. Surround Yourself with Positive People People around you have a big impact on you. They impact who you are, how much money you will make, and what you value. They also impact how you think. If you surround yourself with negative people you will be negative as well. You can't help it. Hearing negativity all day leads you to negativity. The opposite is also true. Surround yourself with positive people and you will be more positive. Session 4 Self Discipline Quote: "The first and best victory is to conquer self."
Plato "You can never conquer the mountain. You can only conquer yourself." Jim Whittaker Activity for the students: Everyone has some self disciplineask the students to hold their breath for 30 seconds. How many can? Students who are able to hold their breath have some self-discipline. But not everyone has developed their discipline to the same degree. Self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. Self-discipline can empower you to overcome any addiction or lose any amount of weight. It can wipe out procrastination, disorder, and ignorance. The five pillars of self-discipline are: Acceptance, Willpower, Hard Work, Diligence, and Persistence. Acceptance means that you perceive reality accurately and consciously acknowledge what you perceive. The most basic mistake people make with respect to self-discipline is a failure to accurately perceive and accept their present situation. If you want to increase your self-discipline, you must know where you stand right now. How strong is your discipline at this moment? Which challenges are easy for you, and which are virtually impossible for you?
Self Discipline
Name: ____________________ Class: _____________________ Heres a list of challenges to get you thinking about where you stand right now: Do you bathe every day? Do you get up at the same time every morning? Including weekends? Are you overweight?
Worksheet 2
Do you have any addictions (caffeine, nicotine, sugar, etc.) youd like to break but havent? Is your email inbox empty right now? Is your home neat and well organized? How much time do you waste in a typical day? If you make a promise to someone, whats the percentage chance youll keep it? If you make a promise to yourself, whats the percentage chance youll keep it? Could you fast for one day? How well organized is your computers hard drive? How often do you exercise? Whats the greatest physical challenge youve ever faced, and how long ago was it? How many hours of focused work do you complete in a typical workday? Do you have clear, written goals? Do you have written plans to achieve them? How much TV do you currently watch? Could you give up TV for 30 days? How do you look right now? What does your appearance say about your level of discipline (clothes, grooming, etc)?
Do you primarily select foods to eat based on health considerations or on taste/satiety? When was the last time you consciously adopted a positive new habit? Discontinued a bad habit? Are you in debt? Do you consider this debt an investment or a mistake? Can you tell me what youll be doing tomorrow? Next weekend? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your overall level of self-discipline?
Identify an area where your discipline is weakest, assess where you stand right now, acknowledge and accept your starting point, and design a training program for yourself to improve in this area. Willpower is the ability to overcome laziness and procrastination. It is the inner power that overcomes the desire to indulge in unnecessary and useless habits, and the inner strength that overcomes inner emotional and mental resistance for taking action. Five simple exercises for improving your willpower
1. Drop a small bad habit
2. Learn something boring but useful 3. Do something you know you should every day for a week 4. Set yourself an achievable, but difficult goal with a date for reaching it 5. Have a month where you ban yourself from putting anything off Examples of Will power 1. You are sitting in a bus or train and an old man or woman, or a pregnant lady walks in. Stand up and give up your seat, even if you prefer to stay seated. Act so, not just because it is polite, but because you are doing something that you are reluctant to do. This is an exercise in overcoming the resistance of your body, mind and feelings. 2. There are dishes in the sink that need washing, and you postpone washing them for later. Get up and wash them now. Do not let your laziness overcome you. When you know that in this way you are developing your will power, and if you are convinced of the importance of will power in your life, it will be easier for you to do whatever you have to do. Being successful is largely about working hard with diligence or single minded devotion. Persistence is the ability to maintain action regardless of your feelings. You press on even when you feel like quitting. In life, the strength of your self-discipline very often determines the likelihood of your success. Because of that, self-control is a skill worth developing.
Building Self-Discipline
The basic method to build self-discipline is to tackle challenges that you can successfully accomplish but which are near your limit. This doesnt mean trying something and failing at it every day, nor does it mean staying within your comfort zone. Progressive training means that once you succeed, you increase the challenge. Its a mistake to try to push yourself too hard when trying to build self-discipline. If you try to transform your entire life overnight by setting dozens of new goals for yourself and expecting yourself to follow through consistently starting the very next day, youre almost certain to fail. The more disciplined you become, the easier life gets. Challenges those were once impossible for you will eventually seem like childs play. Dont compare yourself to other people. It wont help. Simply look at where you are now, and aim to get better as you go forward.
