Most high school students imagine taking
the PSATs as a preparatory exam for the SATs.
Although that may be the case, the PSATs
open more doors than preparing students for
the real deal.
The PSAT is also the National Merit Schol-
arship Qualifying Test which allows students,
who have specific qualifications and an eligi-
ble PSAT score, to be qualified for various
scholarship opportunities.
Three Moorestown Friends School seniors
were recently named National Merit Scholar-
ship Program semifinalists.
Out of 16,000 nationwide high school sen-
iors, Austin Harris, Andrew Jaffe and Joe
Kiernan are a part of the top .5 percentile of
students who took the test, a MFS said.
According to the National Merit Scholar-
ship Programs website, this academic compe-

In addition to the three
semifinalists, the National
Merit Scholarship Program
recognized eight
Moorestown Friends
School (MFS) seniors as
Commended Scholars.
According to Mike

The National Merit

acknowledged approxi-

Two Republican candidates
and one Democratic candidate
were chosen to fill three seats on
Moorestown Council. Republi-
cans Phil Garwood and Victoria
Napolitano, and Democrat Greg
Newcomer were elected.
The results reported by
Burlington County are unofficial
until absentee ballots are count-
ed.
Napolitano took the lead with
4,632 votes out of the 39 precincts
reported. Newcomer was right
behind Napolitano with 4,547
votes.
Garwood with only 115 votes
above his running mate, Republi-
can Peter Palko (4,422 votes), said
it was a close call but he is ready
to get to work.
I look forward to working
with all members on council. I
think we will be able to work to-
gether, he said.
Garwoods priorities during
his term serving Moorestown are
focusing on communication with
school board members and get-
ting the budget done as quickly
as possible, he said.
In his Meet the Candidates sub-
mission to The Sun, Garwood
said he is hoping to work with
Moorestowns business commu-
nity to market Moorestown as
open for business.
Like Garwood, Napolitano
wants to find a way to entice new
businesses to open doors in
Moorestown.

Turkey and pie drive
set for Nov. 19
The Moorestown Home and
School Association will be hold-
ing its annual Turkey and Pie
Drive on Monday, Nov. 19.
A Thanksgiving tradition, the
drive provides holiday meals for
local needy families. Last year,
more than 150 Thanksgiving
meals were collected and boxed.
Volunteer students and parents
in collaboration with the guid-
ance counselors, principals and
teachers at Moorestown public
schools assemble the meals. The
meals include stuffing, gravy,
cranberry sauce and vegetables.
Many of the meals, along with
frozen turkeys and pies go to local
families in Moorestown.
The Home and School Associa-
tion will be accepting frozen
turkeys and fresh or frozen pies
at Maple-Dawson Park (across
from Baker School) on Nov. 19
from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and at the
Upper Elementary School from
8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A turkey collec-
tion will also be made and at the
William Allan Middle School at
8:30 to 11 a.m.
Through the generous dona-
tions of the community, the
Moorestown Home and School
Association will be able to share
the traditional meals with area
families for Thanksgiving.

Council awards contract
for town hall construction
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestown is one step closer
to having a new town hall after
making a final decision on con-
struction bids.
Council unanimously awarded
a $11.1 million contract to
Pennsauken-based Sambe Con-
struction Company Inc. on Thurs-
day, Nov. 1. The contract was $1.6
million under the anticipated
project cost, township manager
Scott Carew said.
Project executive with Grey-
hawk, Rob Notley, said 28 bids
were received. Out of the 28, four
of the lowest qualified bidders
were chosen.
Greyhawk Construction is the
townships agent that will be on
the job day in and day out,
Carew said.
Vineland-based Arthur J.
Ogren, Inc. withdrew its bid mak-
ing Sambe Co. the second to low-
est bidder.
Sambe Co. worked on projects
around Moorestown in the past.
According to Notley, in 2005
Sambe Co. worked on the $14.5
million phase two construction of
the Moorestown High School ad-
ditions.
But Sambes reputation on a
build in Egg Harbour Township
had resident Brian Sattinger con-
cerned.
Sattinger said he entered
Sambes name into a search en-
gine. The first item appearing on
the list was an article in the Press
of Atlantic City calling it the
project from hell, Sattinger
said.
According the article, Sambe
was over budget and past dead-
lines, but the CEO of Sambe Co.
said the project was designed
very poorly and a lot of mis-
takes were presented in the pro-
jects design.
Notley reassured Sattinger, as
well as members on the council,
Greyhawk has no concerns with
Sambe Co.
He said the New Jersey Schools
Development Authority (NJSDA)
a state regulated agency that
oversees construction projects of
schools throughout New Jersey
oversaw the Egg Harbor project.
Since the project is all new con-
struction, the build will not be as
complicated as construction on a
currently standing structure,
Notley said.
According to Notley, the project
is set to begin in 30 to 45 days.

BC News last month reported
that, since the Transportation
Security Administration was
formed 10 years ago, almost 400 em-
ployees have been fired for allegedly
stealing from passengers.
ABC also talked to a former TSA
worker who claims to have stolen
$800,000 worth of cash and merchan-
dise. He quoted TSA employees as say-
ing: I dont care. They aint paying me.
Theyre treating me wrong.
So, some, by no means all or even
close to a majority, of TSA workers
cant be trusted to keep their hands off
phones, tablets and cash.
We dont want to use too wide of a
brush to paint a picture that TSA em-
ployees are thieves and cant be trust-
ed. In the same ABC report, the TSA
said the number fired represented less
than one-half of 1 percent of those
who have been employed.
But the information leads to one
question: If even only a few TSA em-
ployees are stealing from passengers,
how difficult would it be for a terrorist
group to slip one or two of them a few
bucks to allow who knows what to get
through the security checkpoint?
The nations airport security system
should be changed. If were serious
about deterring terror in the sky, we
have to fix the system. It will cost
money, but it also will give us a much
better, and safer, flying experience.
One only needs to look at Israel to
get some ideas. Now, Israel is a much
smaller country with only a couple of
major airports, so perhaps not every
security tactic it uses can be adapted to
the United States.
But the U.S. can incorporate some
measures. There can be highly trained
personnel on hand to interview pas-
sengers, for example. Give a wrong or
puzzling answer? Get pulled out of line
for more questions.
Lets keep our shoes on, hire the
right people to do the job and finally
get serious about protecting airplanes
from terrorists.

tition is based on PSAT scores. To qualify
for the program, each student must take
the PSATs no later than the third year in

Approximately 50,000 students were rec-

of student entrants (16,000 students) make
it through to become a semifinalist. Fifteen
thousand students are notified in February
that they have advanced to the finals. The
boys are eagerly awaiting the final deci-

NYU. He is looking to double
major in English and film studies.
I was honored to receive the
National Merit and Achievement
semifinalist, said Austin. The
application process was sort of
like a preview of what was to
come for college applications.
Joe is also looking into apply-
ing early to college. He said he is
applying early action to Prince-
ton, and wants to study history
and international relations.
Eventually, Joe is looking at at-
tending law school for corporate
law.
My interest is international
relations and history. I really
enjoy [my comparative govern-
ment class], Joe said.
The semifinalists have three
areas of interest.
Austins interest is in litera-
ture; Joes is history and law,
while Andrews attention is fo-
cused on the sciences.
Andrew enjoys physics. Specif-
ically, he likes theoretical science.
He is applying to the Universi-
ty of Chicago, Cornell University
and Carnegie Mellon University
for particle physics and research.
The topics of interest may
vary, but the semifinalists share
bittersweet feelings about gradua-
tion day.
I am going to miss this
school, Austin said. I am also
really excited about whats com-
ing next.
Joe is not eager to leave MFS,
but he said he is looking forward
to college.
I really love this school, every-
thing about it really. But I also at-
tended a college summer pro-
gram and that definitely showed
me I am ready to take the next
step, Andrew said.
All three boys have goals set,
and a topic of interest in mind as
their field of study. As for the
Merit Scholarship Program final-
ist announcement, the rest of the
application process is out of their
control, they said.

looking to return the favor to the
residents.
I am very honored that people
put their faith in me, she said.
With a background in educa-
tion and technology, Napolitano
is hoping to better the communi-
cation between the Council and
School Board as well as council
and residents utilizing technolo-
gy.
Newcomer said, in his Meet the
Candidate pre-election submis-
sion, his priorities are restoring
the citizens voice in Moorestown,
utilizing taxes as best as possible
and improving communication in
all areas of Moorestown.
Board of education
In Board of Education race, a
recent Moorestown graduate, a
former teacher and an incumbent
to the School Board, hope to im-
prove the quality of education for
the students of Moorestown
while improving communication
between faculty, board members
and Moorestown residents.
David Weinstein (3,731 votes)
spent four years as a Board of Ed-
ucation member, and he said he is
looking forward to continually
provide tools for teachers, par-
ents, and students in order to ad-
vance education in the school dis-
trict.
Brandon Pugh (3,238 votes), 19-
year-old volunteer EMT, is the
youngest board member to be
elected. He said he believes his
ongoing involvement in the
Moorestown community ulti-
mately got him elected.
He said he remembers helping
his dad set up for Moorestown
Day when he was 4 years old.
Over the years his involvement
progressed, he said.
Although the results are not
currently official, Pugh said he is
looking forward to getting down
to business.
Like Pugh, Sheryl Sawin (3,572
votes) is a newcomer to the board.
Sawin, a former college professor,
said in her Meet the Candidates
submission that her experience
in education will allow her to un-
derstand what students need to
prepare for college, as well as edu-
cational practices should be cre-
ated for students, teachers and
parents to have a better experi-
ence in the school environment.

Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien thanked
Burlington County residents and
businesses for their overwhelm-
ing response to the countys re-
cent food and clothing drive to as-
sist Ocean County residents who
were relocated in temporary shel-
ters in Burlington County after
being displaced by Hurricane
Sandy.
She said residents should know
that the Countys collection ef-
forts have been brought to a close,
and no further donations of cloth-
ing or personal hygiene items are
necessary.
I cant say enough about the
generosity of Burlington County
residents, said OBrien. We re-
ceived an incredible amount of
clothing and food in just a few
days.
While clothing is no longer
being sought, food can still be
taken directly to local food
pantries, whose shelves are tradi-
tionally in need of replenishing
this time of year.
Our residents really stepped
up and answered the call, said
OBrien. Shortly, those in the
shelters will be moved to more
stable locations, and they will
have more clothing to take with
them.
I know there are other organi-
zations still collecting items for
all the hurricane victims, and I
encourage everyone to support
those efforts.
