Old World / New World: Handcrafted Modern
At its simplest, modern means new or up-to-date. When talking philosophy, its the rejection of tradition over progress and the use of technology to solve new problems. Its also a particular aesthetic, equated with the beauty of sleek, functional design and cutting-edge materials.
For me, the modern sweet spot is the mid-century period still so clearly reflected in some of todays best furniture, architecture and design. Its the balance of aesthetics and utility, clean lines and innovative materials. Its the result of designers finding solutions for life in a fast-changing post-war world and abundant evidence of the optimism, innovation and belief that everything was possible. Heading into the Fall 2013 season, we drew inspiration from this historical modern. But we tempered that with a complementary deep appreciation for slightly rustic, hand-crafted forms. Our intent is to merge the mid-century past with the ideal future that we imagine living. Our handcrafted modern seeks a balance between Old and New World, natural and manmade, technology and handcraft. As we embarked on designing the season, these themes emerged:
Simplexity
The best design appears perfectly simple belying a complex combination of skilled craft and materials. I love this word. The art of baking really good bread is a perfect analogy.
popportunity
Taking advantage of opportunities to include a hit of colour, hidden element or clever detail that makes something even more special.
textural richneSS layerS of Warmth
Taking many forms: tweed, heather, slubby, waffle, confetti, mlange, pucker, oxford... We love them all and relish the textural interplay when used together. Natural fibers combined with or juxtaposed to the best synthetics technology has to offer, for outdoors and in. Old World/New World fabrics that create a memorable experience: soft touch, warm comfort, enveloping, elegant. This collection is packed with new and wonderful design solutions for our Live Toadally approach to daily life. 72% of the mens styles and 66% of womens are new this season. 72% of the line is made using eco-friendlier, more sustainable materials, a metric we are committed to increase every season. Welcome to Fall 2013 and the spirit of modernism infused with warmth and humanity. Peace, kate
