Low-income children in
Moorestown will have their holi-
day wish list fulfilled because of
efforts from MooreKids and the
community.
For the first time as an official
organization, MooreKids is host-
ing a holiday drive. Moorestown
public school staff members col-
lect wish lists from Moorestown
children in need. MooreKids
members take each list and
match them up with families
wishing to donate, MooreKids

The Moorestown Quakers de-
feated the Lumberton Hurricanes
12-6 in a hard-fought battle be-
tween two tough defensive teams
on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The Quakers were aggressive
from the opening kickoff, recover-
ing its own onside kick. After a
couple of long runs, the Hurri-
canes stopped the Quakers on its
own 12-yard line. After Lumber-
ton maintained a formidable
drive for more than five minutes,
the team turned the ball over on
downs as well. The first half con-
tinued as a defensive struggle.
In the second half, the Quakers
took possession at the 45-yard
line. Three plays later,
Moorestown running back Khalil
Majeed scampered 55-yards on a
fake reverse to score the first six
points. After missing the extra
point, the Quakers again kicked
and recovered the onside kick.
After another long run by Ma-
jeed, Moorestown quarterback
Adam Robinson scored from the
one on a quarterback sneak.
Lumberton did not go away
quietly. After a strong sustained
possession, the Lumberton Hurri-
canes quarterback scampered
into the end zone on naked boot-
leg with just over five minutes re-
maining to bring the score to 12-6.

A
s 2012 winds to a close, The
Sun has a couple of special
editions planned.
The first one will be on Dec. 26. It
will be a look back at the major stories
and issues of 2012. Well recap the year
through stories and photos.
The second special edition will be on
Jan. 2. It will be a look ahead to 2013,
and its where we invite you to help us
with our coverage.
Our associate editors are lining up
interviews with local leaders, such as
mayors and school superintendents.
Were preparing a list of questions re-
garding the new year. The idea is to
give the leaders an opportunity to dis-
cuss upcoming issues.
Do you have any questions for your
local officials? If so, please send an
email to us. Our email address for
news submissions appears on this
page and throughout the paper.
Now, were not asking officials to
break out a crystal ball and offer their
prognostications for 2013. No one can
anticipate everything that will happen.
Hurricane Sandy is a prime example.
The storms impact will be felt well
into 2013 and, in some places, even
longer.
But it is possible to set a basic agen-
da for the new year. There may be
some lingering issues from 2012 that
will be wrapped up. There may be
some opportunities or challenges that
already are on the schedule for the up-
coming year. Taxes, for example, al-
ways will be a major topic of discus-
sion. Hopefully, local governing bodies
already are working on plans to make
efficient use of your tax dollar, and
perhaps leaders can share some of
those ideas.
Our editors want to be as thorough
as possible when interviewing local
leaders. They dont want to miss a
question that is on your mind, which is
why were asking for your input.
Send us your questions, and well do
our best to get answers from your local
leaders.

The Sun will be asking leaders about
their plans for 2013. We want to include
any issues that are on your mind. If you

Writer: Valid reasons behind a
Percheron horse statue at park
There is a move on in Moorestown to de-
velop a pocket park at the corner of Main
Street and High Street right in the center
of the downtown. It is offered as a scenic
replacement for the gas station and auto re-
pair shop that long sat on this site. Margo
Foster is the originator of this idea and,
along with others, wishes to enhance the
park with a statue of a Percheron horse.
There are several good points for giving se-
rious consideration to this idea.
In 1839 the Percheron was introduced to
the United States, right here in
Moorestown, from France, by Edward Har-
ris, a gentleman farmer who once lived in
the house, which is now the home of the
Historical Society of Moorestown.
Through the years the Percheron very
big, very strong became Americas farm
horse.
I myself recall childhood visits to a local
farm owned by Joe and Binnie Doppler.
While my sister and I played in the hayloft,
Joe was plowing his fields with horses. No
tractor for Joe. A gift of nature, the horses
were mightily strong, manageable at their
tasks, and placid in disposition.
Those were the days before families had
two or three cars. Some families had no
cars. But, in the countryside, horses were a
regular sight. In Philadelphia, horses still
pulled delivery wagons.
In addition to the farm horse, there was
another common farm animal the mule.
My dad told the story of Asa Roberts who
farmed on Stanwick Avenue. Asa bought a
number of mules from the mid-west. They
were delivered to Moorestown by train.
Feisty creatures, while being unloaded
from the train next to Third Street, they got
out of hand and ran away. It was a childs
delight to see the adults trying to round up
the escaped mules a western scenario in
an eastern town.
But, getting back to horses, another rea-
son to instill a life-sized statue of a
Percheron is the artistic value. A grand
sculpture of a magnificent animal is uplift-
ing. It takes us out of ourselves. We can see
the power and beauty of natures creation.
Unique local history, a reminder of pre-
industrial Moorestown and America, and
beauty are, I believe, valid reasons to in-
stall a statue of the Percheron horse. You
will love it.

The Moorestown Sun
Camden, a city immersed in
poverty, faced a record-breaking
61 murders this year, executive di-
rector of Hope Works Rev. Jeff
Putthoff wrote in a recent article
published on Our Lady of Good
Counsels (OLGC) website.
According to Deacon Tom
Kolon, the general response to the
murder rate is well, what do you
expect? Its Camden.
OLGCs response to the murder
rate is to place 61 crosses on the
front lawn to help bring aware-
ness to the situation most are un-
aware of, Kolon said.
Each cross, containing a name
and age, represents one victim.
Special to The Sun
Deacon Tom Kolon, left, helps plant the crosses on the churchs front
lawn on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

The First Baptist Church of
Moorestown (FBCM) is holding a
special Christmas service, specifi-
cally designed for people in all
stages of recovery.
The Recovery Christmas Serv-
ice will be held at the church on
Sunday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. and will
feature music, scripture and a
Christmas message relevant to
all. There will be refreshments
afterwards.
"We don't often talk about re-
covery in church, especially
around the holidays," said Rev.
Linda Pepe, Pastor of FBCM.
"The thing we sometimes don't
recognize is that we all struggle
with something we just don't all
go to meetings. Many people
struggling with addictions have
sought help through various
groups like Alcoholics Anony-
mous, Narcotics Anonymous, etc.
Although these groups acknowl-
edge a higher power, many people
in recovery don't attend or feel
comfortable in church. Our hope
is to invite this community to cel-
ebrate Christmas in an atmos-
phere of openness, acceptance
and hope."
There is hope waiting for each
of us. Whether you are in a 12
Step program, struggling on your
own with your addiction, are af-
fected by someone who is in re-
covery, or just want to support a
community that is seeking heal-
ing, this service is for you. "
The FBCM has long been active
in and a supporter of social jus-
tice issues. We are an American
Baptist Church and a member of
the Association of Welcoming

Shanmuga advances on violin
with Moorestown School of Music
Moorestown School of Music is
proud to announce the Violin
book two graduation of
Deivanayagam "Deiv" Shanmuga,
a 9th grade student at Lenape
High School.
Deiv is a student of Ms. Jen-
nifer Mullen, Suzuki violin
teacher.
The Suzuki method involves
parents and teacher to nurture
the students' ability through en-
couragement and praise. Deiv has
been studying violin at
Moorestown School of Music for
nearly four years.
To commemorate his accom-
plishment, Deiv played the entire
book from memory as well as a
Martinis Gavotte from book
three. He played pieces by com-
posers including J.S. Bach, Pa-
ganini and L. Boccherini for an
audience of friends and family.
After the recital, Deiv and his
parents hosted a reception at the
school.
Moorestown School of Music
has provided Suzuki music in-
struction in South Jersey since
1998. Individual and group les-
sons are given in Cello, Piano and
Violin. Music Together, a pre-
school music program for chil-
dren birth through kindergarten,
is offered six days a week. The
school is located at 301
Union Street in Moorestown.

The white, wooden crosses
were placed on the lawn the day
before Thanksgiving. Kolon said
the visual element is more effec-
tive over what people see or hear
in the news.
Its one thing to read some-
thing in the paper. Its something
very different to see 61 crosses
representing those lost lives, he
said.
The image of the crosses on the
lawn hits you in the gut, Kolon
said.
Working with disadvantaged
youth at Hope Works a non-prof-
it organization non-profit organi-
zation in Camden Putthoff occa-
sionally visits OLGC. He present-
ed the idea to raise awareness in
the Moorestown community by
placing the crosses on the lawn,
Kolon said.
A similar display is set in Cam-
den by the courthouse and at
Saint Josephs Preparatory
School in Philadelphia, he said.
We are trying to make people
aware. Unfortunately, there is
kind of a laissez faire attitude.
For us, its 12 miles away, Kolon
said.
The original plan was to move
the crosses into the prayer gar-
den, making room for the nativity
display. However, the crosses will
remain on the lawn until a prayer
service is held for the victims and
their family members, Kolon
said.
I think its very spiritual to
have both the nativity and the
crosses out at the same time,
Kolon said.
People will celebrate the holi-
days while the crosses are still up,
but Kolon said its important for
people to celebrate and remember
those who are suffering.
Because it is Christmas time,
people are thinking of very joyful
things and celebrating. There is
celebration, but we also have to
realize we have to help others
who are suffering, he said.
After putting up the crosses, a
change overnight is not expected.
The idea is to create a positive
ripple effect in the community.
Similar ripple effects cause a ma-
jority of the youngsters living in
Camden to get stuck with prob-
lems of poverty and violence,
Kolon said.
There is the same ripple affect
from the murder of each victim.
There is also tremendous ripple
effect, a positive ripple effect that
you have of touching lives of oth-
ers, he said.

looking to spend determines
which list the donating family re-
ceives, MooreKids president
Maura Rafferty said.
Rafferty said she hosted the
holiday drive alone the first year.
The second year, she had a few
people working with her. But this
is the first year hosting the drive
as an official organization.
Besides receiving lists from the
school district, some low-income
families sent emails to the organi-
zation for help. Families indicat-
ed which clothing items are need-
ed, along with three wishes and
the childs reading level, she said.
In response to Moorestowns
families in need, MooreKids, a
501(c) 3 certified organization
dedicated to providing financial
assistance and community sup-
port to low-income children, was
created.
The holiday effort is the most
notoriety at this point. It is just
once piece of what we do. Its not
the main attention-getter, Raffer-
ty said.
Living in an affluent town like
Moorestown, most dont realize
how many children are in need,
Rafferty and Brinkman said.
People in need are in a minor-
ity in Moorestown, and they are
often not seen. Ten percent of our
student body qualify for free or
reduced lunch, Rafferty said.
According to MooreKids web-
page, more than 20 percent of stu-
dents attending Mary E. Roberts
Elementary qualify for free or re-
duced lunch, and approximately
20 students in the school district
are homeless.
We want to prevent these kids
from slipping through the
cracks, Rafferty said.
According to Rafferty, the part-
nership formed with the school
district allows the organization to
find families and children in
need, while maintaining confi-
dentiality.
Before the organization,
Moorestown teachers could not
ask for someone to help children
in need, and are bound by privacy
and confidentiality laws, Rafferty
said.
Teachers had no resources to
help low-income children, she
said.
We are really a bridge be-
tween children that can use some
help in Moorestown and all the
resources Moorestown has to
offer, she said.
With all of the activities and re-
sources in Moorestown, members
of the organization want all chil-
dren to experience what the town
has to offer. Rafferty said each
child should be able to move for-
ward in the world as a product of
the community.
Families given the wish list are
in the process of shopping for the
items. The organization is no
longer collecting toys for the holi-
day drive, Brinkman said.
Since the holiday drive is a
small part of what the organiza-
tion does in the community,
money donations are always ac-
cepted. If not used for the holiday
drive, the extra money will be
used to purchase coats and used
for the organizations general
scholarship fund. For more infor-
mation about the organization or
to make a donation, visit
www.moorekids.org.
