Dear LeConte Community: As part of our annual celebration of the history, culture, and heritage of African Americans, the Coalition of Families of African American Students would like to invite you to participate in two school-wide
activities:
LeConte Family Tree
Please bring a family picture to add to our LeConte Family Tree which is located on the bulletin boards directly in front of classroom 110. The purpose of the project is to show the wonderful diversity of the LeConte Community. Turn in pictures to LeConte teachers.
Classroom Door Decoration Contest
Each LeConte classroom will participate in a Classroom Door Decoration Contest. This is a project for teachers, parents and students to jointly create an artistic presentation on the door of the classroom that represents the theme of Black History: Past and Present. This activity is an opportunity for teachers to lead discussions with students about how groups won the right to vote in the United States, and in particular the historic struggle of African Americans to ensure their right to vote. The door creations will be judged by students of other grades for 1st second and 3rd prizes as follows: A) B) C) Kinder and first grade classrooms (judged by 4th and 5th grade students) 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms (judged by Kinder and 1st grade students) 4th and 5th grade classrooms (judged by 2nd & 3rd grade students)
The doors will be judged based on creativity and representation of the theme. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize for each letter grouping (groups A, B, C). The students and Coalition members will vote by ballot for their favorite door and the winners will be determined based on majority of votes. The door decorations must be completed by Wednesday, February 20th. Elections will be held on Thursday, February 21st in the classrooms (one ballot per student deposited into a ballot box). The votes will be counted by members of the Coalition of Families of African American Students and the winners will be announced at our annual African American Culture and Heritage Celebration on Friday, February 22nd. First prize winners will receive a pizza party, second prize winners will receive an ice cream party, and third prize winners will receive a popcorn party. The Coalition of Families of African American Students appreciates your cooperation in these activities designed to enhance cultural awareness and appreciation of all members of our community at LeConte!
